We report on a 7-year-old girl with unequivocal features of Barber-Say syndrome (BSS): generalized hypertrichosis especially at the back, dry lax skin, macrostomia, thin lips, cup-shaped ears, bulbous nose, hypoplastic nipples, and abnormal external genitalia. She also demonstrated conductive hearing impairment and microblepharon. BSS has been reported with ectropion (not present in our patient), but ablepharon and microblepharon (i.e., absent or hypoplastic eyelids) have always been considered as hallmarks of ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS). This is the first report of microblepharon in

OBJECTIVE: First and second branchial arch involvement during early embryonic development results in a wide spectrum of anomalies that encompass diverse, superimposed, and heterogeneous phenotypes within the so-called oculoauriculovertebral spectrum. Nine members of a Brazilian family presenting typical branchial arch involvement in association with external opthalmoplegia are reported.
CONCLUSION: Macrostomia or abnormal mouth contour, preauricular tags, and uni- or bilateral ptosis were present in association in several patients. To our knowledge, this is the first report on this type of au

We report on two sibs with marked global developmental delay, hearing loss, unusual facial morphology (hypertelorism, long philtrum, exaggerated cupid bow upper lip, thin upper vermilion, large mouth), and broad halluces which were partly bifid on radiographs. The phenotype in the sibs resembles acrocallosal syndrome but differs in absence of macrocephaly, underdeveloped callosal body, and post-axial polydactyly. The patients also resemble Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome but the absence of macrocephaly, broad thumbs, polydactyly, affected sibs and parents make this diagnosis unlikely. Cla

BACKGROUND: Macrostomia, or transverse facial cleft, substantially impairs facial esthetics and oral function. Although various repair techniques have been reported, achieving satisfactory bilateral symmetry, particularly during dynamic expressions such as smiling, continues to be a challenge. Here, we introduce our modified muscle reconstruction technique for unilateral macrostomia repair and evaluate long-term outcomes in static and smile symmetry using anthropometric measurements.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on all patients who underwent unilateral macrostomia repair at

We report a Japanese girl with brachycephaly, a wide forehead, hypertelorism, macroblepharon with eyelid colobomas, ectropion, a broad nasal root, a depressed nasal tip, macrostomia, a small and grooved chin, ear anomalies, a structural anomaly of the corpus callosum, dilatation of the fourth ventricle, a urogenital sinus, and mental retardation. Cause and inheritance are unknown.

Macrostomia is arare congenital craniofacial deformity that influences the appearance and function of patients. In most cases, it coexists with craniomaxillofacial deformities such as craniofacial microsomia (CFM). This study aimed to analyze the relationship between macrostomia and mandibular hypoplasia so as to facilitate the early detection and diagnosis of children with CFM. It included 236 patients diagnosed with CFM. All underwent facial expression analysis, multi-angle photography, computed tomography, and three-dimensional reconstruction of soft and hard tissues. Congenital macrostomia is a relatively rare deformity. A number of different methods for its correction have been reported in the past. Here, we report our refined method of correcting macrostomia. Our method is characterized by creation of a small triangular mucosal flap on the cleft region of the lower red lip where the tissue appears identical to the normal commissure. Adequate advancement of this flap into the mouth along with proper reconstruction of muscle continuity and simple line closure of the skin enable correction of macrostomia with a natural-looking commissure in a symmetric posi

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome is a rare congenital disorder caused by autosomal-dominant TWIST2 mutations. This condition is characterized by redundant skin, low-set ears, macrostomia, ambiguous genitalia, and underdevelopment of the both upper and lower eyelids. The shortening of the anterior lamella, septum and levator aponeurosis lead to a severe corneal exposure within the first hours of life. Since McCarthy and West's first report in 1977, 21 AMS cases have been documented. We report a new AMS case with a quantitative analysis of palpebral fissure changes following skin grafts over the

UNLABELLED: The surgical methods for repairing congenital macrostomia should be carefully selected from both functional and aesthetic points of view. The surgical correction of macrostomia results in normal orbicularis oris function and symmetry of the repaired lip. In this article, the authors report their novel technique and the results obtained, assessed retrospectively. Twelve primary cases of macrostomia underwent surgical repair between 1996 and 2013. The age at surgery ranged from 3 to 78 months. The authors' operative procedure uses two small triangular flaps with a superficial layer o

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS; OMIM 200110) is an extremely rare congenital malformation syndrome. It overlaps clinically with Fraser syndrome (FS; OMIM 219000), which is known to be caused by mutations in either FRAS1, FREM2, or GRIP1, encoding components of a protein complex that plays a role in epidermal-dermal interactions during morphogenetic processes. We explored the hypothesis that AMS might be either allelic to FS or caused by mutations in other genes encoding known FRAS1 interacting partners. No mutation in either of these genes was found in a cohort of 11 patients with AMS fr

We reported a 2-year-old boy with developmental delay, mild mental retardation, and severe craniofacial malformation, including facial asymmetry with hypoplasia of the left zygoma, maxilla, and mandible, and left anophthalmia and anotia. A genome-wide screen revealed a 1.38 Mb duplication on chromosome 1q31.1, which was absent in his parents and 27 healthy controls. The duplication region contains two Refseq genes, PLA2G4A and C1orf99, which have not been reported to be implicated in craniofacial malformation. Functional studies of these genes and additional clinical analysis are necessary to

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Macrostomia is a congenital deformity found in Tessier no. 7 facial clefts defined as an enlargement of the mouth at the oral commissure. Several techniques are described in literature to achieve optimal functional and aesthetic results, with varying results and surgeon preferences. In this case series we report surgical repair of macrostomia with a vermillion square flap method for the oral commissure combined with either Z-plasty or W-plasty closure for the skin.
CASES PRESENTATION: A retrospective case analysis of 12 patients with macrostomia operated over the

INTRODUCTION: Several variations on the surgical technique for macrostomia repair have been described in the literature. There has been controversy regarding the preferred method for commissuroplasty and skin closure for optimal functional and aesthetic results. The aim of this study is to present these techniques and the most described methods up to date.Further, five patients operated with a combination of techniques are presented.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: PRISMA guidelines were followed for literature review.Five consecutive patients with unilateral macrostomia operated during a period of one

Congenital macrostomia, or Tessier number 7 cleft, is a rare craniofacial anomaly. We present a unique patient with bilateral macrostomia that consisted of a "double" transverse cleft on the left side and a single transverse cleft on the right side. A staged reconstructive approach was used to repair the "double" left-sided clefts. This staged technique produced a satisfactory aesthetic and functional outcome.

During the XVIth century, Ambroise Paré described the birth of a child with a " frog head". The occurrence of the malformation was explained by a "medical" treatment, which implied that the mother must take a frog in her hand. It was supposed that the abnormality could be a macrostomia, due to a lack of fusion of maxillar and mandibular buds. We present here a postmortem specimen of macrostomia, with CT scanner exploration. Differential diagnosis with a cyclotocephaly is discussed.
