INTRODUCTION: Odontogenic myxomas arising in the jaws are uncommon, with a recurrence rate of 25% on average. They are usually locally invasive, aggressive, benign, non-metastasizing neoplasms consisting of spindle- and stellate-shaped cells suspended in abundant myxoid stroma.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old male patient visited our department with a complaint of gradually progressive swelling in the right lower third of his face for the past 2 years. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed a well-defined radiolucent lesion measuring approximately 15.3 × 15 mm.

Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma (SBL) is a variant of Burkitt lymphoma that occurs worldwide, affecting mainly children and young adults. Association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can be identified in approximately 20-30% of cases. Herein we described a case of a 63-year-old male presenting intraoral bilateral mandibular swelling, subjacent to fixed dental prosthesis, with one month of duration. Incisional biopsies were performed, and after two days, the patient was hospitalized due to malaise and breathing difficulty, and died after a week when an abdominal tumor was detected. The mandibular biopsi

BACKGROUND: Mandible can be the site of benign or malignant lesions of different origins, including odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions. Cartilage-forming tumors have been rarely reported at this site. Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant cartilage-producing neoplasm that is extremely rare in the mandible. The rarity of cartilage-forming tumor occurrence in the mandible can make diagnosis difficult for pathologists, as they do not expect this type of tumor at this anatomical site. Here we report a case of chondrosarcoma of mandibular angle.

Review of submandibular triangle neoplasms (benign and malignant) treated at a tertiary referral centre in the United Kingdom (1986-2004). One hundred and seven cases identified via computerised search of histopathology records over the 18 year review period. Retrospective review clinical notes and collation with data maintained prospectively by the senior author. Forty nine benign and 58 malignant neoplasms of the submandibular triangle were reviewed. Definitive diagnosis was by excision and pathological examination. Pleomorphic adenoma (n=37) were the most common benign neoplasms. For malign

PURPOSE: Childhood mandibular lesions are frequently benign; this allows for a conservative surgical approach to their management. Two of the most common approaches for reconstruction of acquired mandibular defects in adolescents are vascularized and nonvascularized osseous flaps or grafts. A third, less commonly used treatment option often used in developing parts of the world that some Western centers are considering as part of their treatment algorithm is spontaneous bone regeneration. This study reports on the authors' experiences with spontaneous bone formation of the resected young mandi

This case report describes an intraosseous neurilemoma, observed radiographically as a multilocular lesion, in a 12-year-old patient. Physical examination revealed facial asymmetry, swelling on the right side of the mandibular body, and bone expansion in the region of the base of the buccal sulcus. Panoramic radiography revealed a multilocular radiolucency on the right side of the mandibular body in the periapical region extending from the distal region of the first premolar root to the second molar and adjacent to the third molar. Evaluation of a radiograph obtained 3 years earlier for an ort

Osteochondroma is a benign cartilaginous neoplasm and the most common benign tumor of bone. Osteochondromas occur primarily in the axial skeleton with a predilection for the distal femur, and relatively few cases occur in the head and neck region. The majority of cases of osteochondromas in the head and neck region affect the mandibular condyle, with fewer cases reported in the skull base and the neck. To our knowledge, there is no reported case of osteochondroma of the hyoid bone documented in the English literature. We thus report the first case of a hyoid bone osteochondroma, presenting as

Lymphoma is a malignant neoplasm of component cells of the lymphoid system which is very rare in the jaws. Here we report a case of primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma located in the periapical region of a mandibular molar which was misdiagnosed as chronic periapical periodontitis. The present case was diagnosed at an early stage and effectively managed by chemotherapy. Although lymphoma of the mandible is rare, it must be considered in the differential diagnosis of radiolucent lesions in this region. Lack of knowledge of this rare presentation may lead to delays in diagnosis and poor progno

Oral melanoma (OM) is a rare, malignant neoplasm of melanocytic origin. It accounts for 0.2 - 8% of all melanomas. In contrast to its cutaneous counterpart, OM has poor prognosis, possibly due to late clinical diagnosis, nonexistence of standardized clinical or histopathological grading and anatomical limitation in complete excision of the lesion. For better understanding of the lesion, case reports are still considered to be the source of information. Here we present a case of oral primary melanoma occurring in an uncommon site, the mandibular gingiva, with review of related literature.

An intraoral prosthesis was fabricated to restore more normal contour to a patient's lower lip that was compromised following a marginal mandibulectomy performed to eradicate a malignant neoplasm. The surgical resection compromised the lower lip on the affected side because the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve was damaged during the surgical resection. The prosthesis successfully restored the lost lip support, reduced the incidence of lip biting, and improved the patient's oral competency. This clinical report describes the procedure for making an intraoral lip plumper prosthesis

Intraosseous vascular lesions are rare conditions, comprising only 0.5% to 1% of all intraosseous tumors. They mainly occur in the second decade of life especially in women. The most common locations are the vertebral column and skull; nevertheless, the mandible is a quite rare location. According to the World Health Organization, hemangiomas are benign vasoformative neoplasms of endothelial origin. However, the origin of central hemangioma is debatable. Some authors believe that it is a true neoplasm, whereas others state it is a hamartomatous lesion. Clinically, the patient may be completely

The most frequent causes of painful limitation of temporomandibular joint function are myofascial pain dysfunction or anterior disk displacement. A potential problem in dealing with those patients is the risk of misdiagnosing the rare patient who has a neoplastic disease, primary or metastatic to the epipharyngeal region, parotid gland, jaws, or temporomandibular joint. Three cases are presented in which progressively worsening limitation of mandibular movement and increasing pain led to the diagnosis of a neoplasm in the temporomandibular joint region. The article illustrates the necessity of

A case of pathologic fracture of a mandibular condyle due to a primary adenocarcinoma of the rectum is presented. This is the first reported case of a secondary adenocarcinoma from the rectum to this site. Secondary metastases to the condyles are extremely rare. Only twelve have been reported in the literature. The primary tumor was from an unknown site in three cases (anaplastic adenocarcinoma); from the breast in four; and from the lung, liver, prostate, uterus, and hallux (a malignant melonama) in the remainder. Only of these tumors presented as a condylar fracture, and that was from a prim

A 11-year-old, Haflinger breed mare developed a slowly growing mass, protruding on the ventral aspect of the mandible. On palpation, the lesion was pedunculated, very firm, cold and not painful. Radiographic examinations showed a radiopaque, multi-lobular, "mushroom-like" lesion, which arose from the mandibular cortex without involving the bone marrow cavity. Thereafter, the mass was excised for cosmetic purposes. Microscopically, the lesion mainly consisted of bone trabeculae, covered by a thick layer of connective tissue resembling the periosteum. History and clinical findings allowed the te

Lipomas are common benign neoplasms affecting many adipose tissue-containing organs of the body, including bone. Central lesions in bone account for less than 1% of all lipomas. In the literature, intraosseous lipomas have been reported in various bones such as the frontal and parietal bones, ribs, ulna, phalanges of hand and foot, femoral neck, fibula and calcaneum. No preference has been described for gender or race. As far as the authors know, there have been no documented cases of intraosseous lipoma involving the temporomandibular joint. This report describes a rare case of mandibular int

INTRODUCTION: Warthin's tumor (WT) is the second most common neoplasm of the parotid gland and consists of two components, including lymphoid stroma and glandular epithelium. The malignant transformation of this tumor occurs most often in the lymphoid component; however, the carcinomatous transformation of the epithelial component is rare.
CASE REPORT: We present a patient who had a mass in the right mandibular angle two years before referral. A cystic mass was reported on sonography, and the patient underwent superficial parotidectomy with a pre-operative impression of lymphangiomatouse-like

Pindborg tumor or calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a rare benign neoplasm. The average age at diagnosis is 40 years without a significant prevalence for one sex. The most frequent localization is the mandibular premolar and molar area; less frequently the lesion is found in the maxilla, while other localizations like the maxillary sinus are extremely rare. Ethiology of this lesion is not clear. The complete surgical removal of the lesion is usually considered the most common type of treatment. The authors report a peculiar case of Pindborg tumor characterized by a rare localization o

Burkitt's lymphoma is a malignant endemic neoplasia with a mandibular localization, described for the first time in 1958, in African children. The World Health Organization classification recognises several variants of Burkitt's lymphoma; all are highly malignant B cell lymphomas. Besides Burkitt's sporadic, endemic lymphoma and Burkitt's lymphoma associated with AIDS, the World Health Organization classification includes an "atypical or pleomorphic" variant of Burkitt's lymphoma. This subtype includes those cases diagnosed as "Burkitt-like" lymphoma in the REAL (Revised European-American Clas

A calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a rare, benign odontogenic neoplasm. Surgical treatment is the option, and late recurrence is very rare. Radiologically, the lesions are commonly present scattered calcifications. This case report details a 64-year-old female patient with a recurrence of a right mandibular calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor 2 decades after successful initial surgical removal. A segmental mandibulectomy and immediate reconstruction were performed using a planned vascularized free fibula flap with virtual surgery, custom reconstruction plate, and intraoperative c

Leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) are rare malignant mesenchymal tumors which show smooth-muscle differentiation. Most LMSs involving the oral tissues primarily affect the maxillary sinus, the maxillary or mandibular bone. We present a case of LMS of the mandibular alveolar mucosa, arising in a 12-year-old male child from Ethiopia. A malignant spindle cell-like neoplasm was diagnosed on clinical and radiographic findings as well as on incisional biopsy. The tumor was resected with wide margins. The following histopathologic examination with additional immunohistochemical studies secured the diagnosis LMS
