BACKGROUND: Comparative studies suggest that patients treated with oncoplastic breast conservation surgery (OBCS) have similar pathology to patients treated with wide local excision (WLE). However, patients treated with OBCS have never been compared to patients treated with mastectomy. The aim of this study was to identify which control group was comparable to patients undergoing OBCS.

Radical mastectomy is excellent only for cases of operable breast cancer in which the tumor is limited to the breast or to the nodes in the axilla. A 60-year-old woman presented with diffuse bone pain 12 months after simple mastectomy. During investigation for metastatic disease it was realized that her pain had preceded the mastectomy by 2 years and that the biochemical and radiological findings were inconsistent with metastatic disease. The findings of phosphaturia, hypophosphataemia, normocalcaemia and normal renal function without hyperparathyroidism are discussed in the light of the rarity of such findings in a 60-year-old adult and, in particular, in a patient with cancer of the breast.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is an extremely actual problem in modern medicine and surgery in particular. Constantly growing frequency, younger age of the newly diagnosed patients, severe psychological collapse of the patients and serious impairment of quality of life are only some of the factors determining actuality of the problem.
AIM: The aim of the present survey is to make a retrospective comparative clinical analysis of the results obtained after breast-conserving surgery and simple mastectomy in terms of 5- and 10-year survival, local recurrences and cosmetic outcome.

Evaluation of a mastectomy site is more effective with ultrasonography (US) than with either mammography or chest computed tomography because abnormalities are usually small and close to the skin surface. The performance of the General Health Questionnaire as a case detector was assessed in 75 patients receiving chemotherapy for early breast cancer.
