Second-Line Radiation Therapy for Locally Recurrent Prostate Cancer After Focal Therapy: A Single Institution Matched-Pair Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Focal therapy (FT) is an alternative to prostate radiation therapy (RT) that targets a single intraprostatic tumor. When FT fails, second-line, whole-prostate radiation therapy (SRT) is considered; however, limited safety data is available. We report toxicity outcomes in patients undergoing SRT after FT. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 5606 prostate cancer patients evaluated from 2000 to 2024. Toxicities of patients who underwent SRT after FT were compared to patients treated with RT-alone. Propensity score matching balanced baseline patient and tumor characteristics. Differenc

The role of prenatal testosterone-estrogen balance in the development of Os trigonum: A comparative matched-pair analysis.

BACKGROUND: The 2D:4D ratio, a marker of the prenatal testosterone-estrogen balance, is defined as the proportion of the second to fourth finger lengths, with lower values indicating greater testosterone exposure. Studies demonstrated that this exposure affects chondrocyte activity and function during secondary ossification. Considering that the os trigonum is an unfused secondary ossification center, investigating the relationship between hormonal balance and os trigonum could provide valuable insights as etiopathogenesis. AIM: To investigate the relationship between the presence of os trigo

Histological characteristics of early-stage oral tongue cancer in young versus older patients: A multicenter matched-pair analysis.

Little is known about the histopathological characteristics that may differentiate early oral tongue cancer (OTSCC) between young and older patients. From a total of 311 cases diagnosed with clinically early-stage OTSCC at 6 institutions, only 42 patients were young patients were aged ≤45 years. For comparison, 42 patients >60 years old were matched for center of management, clinical stage and gender. We compared epithelial and stromal histopathologic parameters between the two groups. Most of the parameters were similar between the two groups, although the young patients appeared to have marg

Neurosurgical procedure for treatment of traumatic subdural hematoma with severe brain injury: a single center matched-pair analysis.

Decompressive craniectomy (DC), an auxiliary neurosurgical invasive procedure, has been a part of the treatment regimen for severe brain injury (SBI). Today DC is the standard of care in patients with middle cerebral artery infarction. Our previous positive research results about effectiveness of DC procedure when applied to a specific group of SBIlpatients have made a solid base for a clinical evaluation of DC technique application to patients with isolated SBI with traumatic subdural hematoma (TSDH), despite controversies regarding clinical benefit of DC technique when applied to STBI patien

Outcome of Total Hip and Total Knee Revision Arthroplasty With Minor Infection Criteria: A Retrospective Matched-Pair Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although diagnostic modalities for the detection of periprosthetic joint infection have improved, some infectious revision cases may still be diagnosed as aseptic complications. We raised the question whether patients with positive Musculoskeletal Infection Society minor infection criteria differ in their outcome parameters (revision-free survival, revision rate) when compared to patients with "true" aseptic complications. Additionally, we asked whether the indication for revision surgery (eg, loosening) might have an influence on possible outcome discrepancies. METHODS: A retrosp

History of Ureteral Stenting Negatively Affects the Outcomes of Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy. Results of a Matched-pair Analysis.

To evaluate the impact of ureteral stenting history to the outcomes of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy, we retrospectively analysed patients who underwent shockwave lithotripsy with Dornier Gemini lithotripter between September 2010 and August 2012. Forty seven patients (group A) who had a double J stent which was removed just before the procedure were matched-paired with another 47 patients (group B) who underwent shockwave lithotripsy having no stent history. The correlation between ureteral stenting history and stone-free rates was assessed. Stone-free rates were 68.1% and 87.2% for pa

T-cell-replete haploidentical transplantation versus autologous stem cell transplantation in adult acute leukemia: a matched pair analysis.

Adult patients with acute leukemia in need of a transplant but without a genoidentical donor are usually considered upfront for transplantation with stem cells from any other allogeneic source, rather than autologous stem cell transplantation. We used data from the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and performed a matched pair analysis on 188 T-cell-replete haploidentical and 356 autologous transplants done from January 2007 to December 2012, using age, diagnosis, disease status, cytogenetics, and interval from diagnosis to transplant as matching factors. Nipple reconstruction after implant-based breast reconstruction: a "matched-pair" outcome analysis focusing on the effects of radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The major focus of research when addressing nipple reconstruction has been on developing new techniques to provide for long-lasting nipple projection. Rarely, has the outcome of nipple reconstruction as it relates to postoperative morbidity, particularly after implant-based breast reconstruction, been analyzed. METHODS: A "matched-pair" study was designed to specifically answer the question whether a history of radiotherapy predisposes to a higher complication rate after nipple reconstruction in patients after implant-based breast reconstruction.
