Maternal diets deficient in folic acid and related methyl donors modify mechanisms associated with lipid metabolism in the fetal liver of the rat.

Previously we have examined the effects of diets deficient in folic acid ( - F) or folate deficient with low methionine and choline ( - F LM LC) on the relative abundance of soluble proteins in the liver of the pregnant rat. In the present study we report the corresponding changes in the fetal liver at day 21 of gestation. The abundance of eighteen proteins increased when dams were fed the - F diet. When dams were fed the - F LM LC diet, thirty-three proteins increased and eight decreased. Many of the differentially abundant proteins in the fetal liver could be classified into the same functio

Maternal Obesity Related to High Fat Diet Induces Placenta Remodeling and Gut Microbiome Shaping That Are Responsible for Fetal Liver Lipid Dysmetabolism.

Background: Maternal obesity in utero may affect fetal development and cause metabolic problems during childhood and even adulthood. Diet-induced maternal obesity can impair gut barrier integrity and change the gut microbiome, which may contribute to adverse placental adaptations and increase the obesity risk in offspring. However, the mechanism through which maternal obesity causes offspring metabolic disorder must be identified. Methods: Eight-week-old female rats received a control diet or high-fat (HF) diet for 11 weeks before conception and during gestation. The placentas were collected o

Alpha-fetoprotein levels in maternal plasma and amniotic fluid during prostaglandin-induced mid-trimester abortions: the relation to fetal distress and death.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels were measured in both plasma and amniotic fluid during 43 abortions induced with prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) and their relationship to the induction-abortion interval and signs of fetal distress or intrauterine death examined. The mean plasma AFP levels showed a progressive rise after PGF2alpha administration but abnormally high levels were found infrequently until the time of delivery. Feto-maternal bleeding could explain the abnormally high plasma AFP levels which occurred early in a few cases. A shorter induction-abortion interval was found in patients w

Development and validation of model for prediction of placental dysfunction-related stillbirth from maternal factors, fetal weight and uterine artery Doppler at mid-gestation.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the performance of a model combining maternal risk factors, uterine artery pulsatility index (UtA-PI) and estimated fetal weight (EFW) at 19-24 weeks' gestation, for predicting all antepartum stillbirths and those due to impaired placentation, in a training dataset used for development of the model and in a validation dataset. METHODS: The data for this study were derived from prospective screening for adverse obstetric outcome in women with singleton pregnancy attending for routine pregnancy care at 19 + 0 to 24 + 6 weeks' gestation. The study population was divided int

[Decreased alpha fetoprotein in maternal serum in relation to increased alpha fetoprotein in amniotic fluid in a case of fetal trisomy 21 associated with esophageal atresia].

A subnormal maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein level associated with elevated alpha-fetoprotein level in amniotic fluid was found in a case of trisomy 21 combined with esophageal atresia in a fetus at 36 + 5 weeks of gestation. The significance of this observation is discussed in view of the possible biologic mechanisms resulting in maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein reduction in cases of fetal autosomal trisomies. The most likely hypotheses seem to be a reduced fetal alpha-fetoprotein production and/or an alteration of the placental regulation of the alpha-fetoprotein transfer from fetal to mater

Differences in in vitro binding of diazepam and N-desmethyldiazepam to maternal and fetal plasma proteins at birth: relation to free fatty acid concentration and other parameters.

The in vitro protein binding of diazepam and its major plasma metabolite, N-desmethyldiazepam (DMD), was measured in women at full term of pregnancy, in mixed cord plasma (fetal plasma), and in control subjects. The free fraction of both drugs was determined by ultrafiltration at 37 degrees. The mean free fraction of diazepam was 0.023 +/- 0.0043 in control subjects and rose to 0.040 +/- 0.0071 in women at term, whereas in their fetuses the free fraction was 0.021 +/- 0.0057. The unbound fraction of DMD was 0.030 +/- 0.0084 in control subjects, 0.052 +/- 0.015 in women at term, and 0.035 +/- 0

Significance of inhibitory maternal killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) and fetal KIR ligand genotype combinations in placenta related obstetric complications.

Some maternal killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) and fetal KIR ligand genotypes are associated with obstetric complications, such as recurrent miscarriage, fetal growth restriction, preeclampsia, and preterm birth. However, how KIR/KIR ligand genotypes affect these placenta-related obstetric complications has not been fully understood. We aimed to demonstrate the association of maternal KIR-fetal KIR ligand genotype combinations with immunological/metabolic risk factor associated placenta-related obstetric complications. This study consisted of three groups of pregnant women: 1) Mi

Maternal early pregnancy vitamin D status in relation to fetal and neonatal growth: results of the multi-ethnic Amsterdam Born Children and their Development cohort.

Low vitamin D levels during pregnancy may account for reduced fetal growth and for altered neonatal development. The present study explored the association between maternal vitamin D status measured early in pregnancy and birth weight, prevalence of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants and postnatal growth (weight and length), as well as the potential role of vitamin D status in explaining ethnic disparities in these outcomes. Data were derived from a large multi-ethnic cohort in The Netherlands (Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) cohort), and included 3730 women with live

Maternal, Fetal and Neonatal Outcomes Related to Recreational Cannabis Use during Pregnancy: Analysis of a Real-World Clinical Data Warehouse between 2010 and 2019.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is the main illicit psychoactive substance used in French childbearing women and very few data are available about adverse events (AEs) related to its use during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between recreational cannabis use during pregnancy and adverse outcomes from a real-world clinical data warehouse. METHODS: Data from the Poitiers University Hospital warehouse were analyzed between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2019. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations between outcomes in three prenatal user groups: canna

Severe preeclampsia-related changes in gene expression at the maternal-fetal interface include sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin-6 and pappalysin-2.

Preeclampsia (PE), which affects 4-8% of human pregnancies, causes significant maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Within the basal plate, placental cytotrophoblasts (CTBs) of fetal origin invade the uterus and extensively remodel the maternal vasculature. In PE, CTB invasion is often shallow, and vascular remodeling is rudimentary. To better understand possible causes, we conducted a global analysis of gene expression at the maternal-fetal interface in placental samples from women with PE (n = 12; 24-36 wk) vs. samples from women who delivered due to preterm labor with no evidence

Epidemiology and Maternal-Fetal Outcomes of Pregnancy-Related Acute Kidney Injury: A Prospective Observational Study of a Predominantly Dialysis-Requiring Cohort at a Tertiary Care Center in Northern India.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-associated acute kidney injury (PRAKI) is a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- to middle-income countries like India. The majority of patients with stage 1/2 acute kidney injury (AKI) recover without any long-term sequelae; however, the scenario changes completely when the patients are found to be dialysis-requiring. Fixed decline in glomerular filtration rate and progression to end-stage renal disease/long-term dialysis requirement can occur in the latter group of patients, posing significant health challenges and a burden to soci

Similar photoperiod-related birth seasonalities among professional baseball players and lesbian women with an opposite seasonality among gay men: Maternal melatonin may affect fetal sexual dimorphism.

Based on pre-mid-20th-century data, the same photoperiod-related birth seasonality previously observed in schizophrenia was also recently found in neural-tube defects and in extreme left-handedness among professional baseball players. This led to a hypothesis implicating maternal melatonin and other mediators of sunlight actions capable of affecting 4th-embryonic-week developments including neural-tube closure and left-right differentiation of the brain. Here, new studies of baseball players suggest that the same sunlight actions could also affect testosterone-dependent male-female differentia

Maternal serum biochemistry at 11-13(+6) weeks in relation to the presence or absence of the fetal nasal bone on ultrasonography in chromosomally abnormal fetuses: an updated analysis of integrated ultrasound and biochemical screening.

BACKGROUND: Screening for trisomy 21 by a combination of maternal age, fetal nuchal translucency (NT) thickness and maternal serum free beta-hCG and pregnancy associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) at 11-13(+6) weeks of gestation is associated with a detection rate of 90%, for a false-positive rate of 5%. Recent evidence suggests that in about 70% of fetuses with trisomy 21 the nasal bone is not visible at the 11-13(+6) week scan and that the frequency of absence of nasal bone differs in different ethnic groups. In addition, there is a relationship between absent nasal bone and nuchal translucen
