Solitary plasmacytoma of the maxilla--a case report and review of the literature.

Plasma cell neoplasms have been classified as multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma. The solitary plasmacytoma of the maxilla is a rare condition that focuses solely on myelomatous tissue and is not disseminated to other parts of the skeleton. Some lesions appear to be benign and do not recur after complete removal, while others are locally invasive. The dense plasma cell infiltration that commonly is associated with inflammatory lesions within the oral tissues makes diagnosing plasmacytoma at this site problematic. This article presents a case of solitary pl

Atypical presentation of antrochoanal polyp in a child.

Antrochoanal polyp is a benign, solitary polypoid lesion arising from the edematous mucosa of the maxillary sinus and extending through the maxillary ostium into the nose. In children, it constitutes 33% of all nasal polyps. It presents most commonly with unilateral nasal obstruction and purulent rhinorrhea. Surgery is the usual treatment for antrochoanal polyps. The primary aim of treatment for antrochoanal polyp must be complete removal with total cleaning of the maxillary sinus. In this article, we present a case of a 13-year-old boy with an antrochoanal polyp who complained of difficulty i

An atypical presentation of metastatic gestational choriocarcinoma with maxillary sinus and subcutaneous involvement; report of a case with literature review.

Extragonadal germ cell tumors are rare neoplasms with histologic features comparable to those of gonadal origin. In this case report we present a 21-year-old female patient with an atypical localization of metastatic gestational choriocarcinoma. She was admitted to our hospital with recurrent epistaxis, abnormal vaginal bleeding, rectal bleeding, subcutaneous nodules on both thighs and forearms and left maxillary mass with intranasal cavity invasion. Laboratory analysis revealed significant elevation in serum beta-human chorionic gonodotropin (beta-HCG) level. Abdominal computerized tomography

Maxillary antrolith: a rare cause of the recurrent sinusitis.

Introduction. An antrolith is a calcified mass within the maxillary sinus. The origin of the nidus of calcification may be extrinsic (foreign body in sinus) or intrinsic (stagnant mucus and fungal ball). Most antroliths are small and asymptomatic. Larger ones may present as sinusitis with symptoms like pain and discharge. Case Report. We report a case of a 47-year-old lady who presented with heaviness on the left side of the face and loosening of the left 2nd molar tooth since two months. CT scan of the osteomeatal complex and paranasal sinuses showed an opacification of bilateral maxillary si

Angiofibroma of the maxillary gingiva: a rare case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Angiofibromas are benign fibrovascular neoplasms that rarely involve the oral cavity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old female presented with a painless swelling on the buccal gingiva adjacent to the right maxillary second molar. Examination revealed a solitary, sessile, oval mass measuring 1.5 cm × 1.2 cm × 1.0 cm. The lesion was excised under local anesthesia. Histopathology confirmed an angiofibroma, showing non-keratinized hyperplastic epithelium overlying a fibrous stroma containing numerous newly formed capillaries. Healing was uneventful, with no recurrence at 1 year. CLI

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the maxillary sinus with orbital involvement in a pediatric patient: Case report.

This report presents a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (eRMS) located in the left maxillary sinus and invading the orbital cavity in a ten-year-old male patient who was treated at a referral hospital. The images provided from the computed tomography showed a heterogeneous mass with soft-tissue density, occupying part of the left half of the face inside the maxillary sinus, and infiltrating and destroying the bone structure of the maxillary sinus, left orbit, ethmoidal cells, nasal cavity, and sphenoid sinus. An analysis of the histological sections revealed an undifferentiated malignant neo

Maxillary sinus mucoceles and other side effects of external-beam radiation in the pediatric patient: A cautionary tale.

A sinonasal mucocele can develop after the obstruction of a sinus ostium, which can occur secondary to trauma, infection, a neoplasm, or an iatrogenic cause. These mucoceles typically arise in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. Sinonasal mucoceles are epithelium-lined cysts that can gradually expand to fill a paranasal sinus. They can present with ophthalmologic, rhinologic, and neurologic symptoms. There are reports in the literature of sinonasal mucocele development after radiation for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. However, these cases are rare; when they do occur, they tend to arise in the spheno

A rare presentation of Sinonasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma with brain metastasis and para-aortic mass.

Sinonasal Undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) comprises 3% of the head and neck tumors, including metastatic neoplasms. Herein we report the case of a 60-year-old male who was brought dead to our institute with previous records of a contrast-enhanced CT scan of the brain and MRI with evidence of tumor in the maxillary sinus with intracranial extensions. The histopathological examination of the mass in the maxillary sinus proved to be SNUC with metastases to the brain, lungs, and around the aorta. These tumors are undifferentiated and are distinct from other poorly differentiated tumors in derivi

Pleomorphic adenoma of the maxillary sinus with orbital extension presenting with exophthalmos: a case report.

We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of the maxillary sinus, an unusual and rare location of this frequent benign neoplasm originating from salivary glands and accounting for 70% of all salivary gland tumors, presenting with compressive phenomena from the orbit and the challenges in its differential diagnosis and management. A 66-year-old male presented with progressively worsening exophthalmos over the past 4 months and symptoms of nasal obstruction on the left side for the past year. Clinical evaluation and imaging studies revealed complete occupation of the left maxillary sinus by a

Rare and massive odontogenic parakeratotic cyst treated by endoscopic sinus surgery: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Keratocystic odontogenic tumors are benign neoplasms of odontogenic origin with a potential for aggressive and infiltrative behavior. Many different treatments for this type of lesion have been reported. However, no common consensus has emerged to date regarding the most effective therapeutic approach. Cases of maxillary sinus giant keratocystic odontogenic tumors completely excised by enucleation or marsupialization via endoscopic sinus surgery are extremely rare, and, to the best of our knowledge, only one case has been described in the literature since 2005. CASE PRESENTATION

Paranasal sinus Burkitt's lymphoma in a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive male.

Patients infected with the HIV virus have been reported to develop several malignant neoplasms, the most frequent of which is Kaposi's sarcoma. Although an increasing number of lymphomas, primarily non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, have been described who are HIV seropositive, few cases of Burkitt's lymphoma have been reported in patients. We report a case of an HIV-seropositive man who had paranasal sinus Burkitt's lymphoma underlying chronic maxillary sinusitis. Successful remission was achieved with chemotherapy.

Large calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor with extension into the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare, locally invasive neoplasm characterized by the presence of amyloid material that can become calcified. It often is found in the posterior region of the mandible. Such tumors in the maxilla and those that invade the maxillary sinus are extremely rare. This article presents the sixth reported clinical case of a CEOT that invaded the maxillary sinus and extended to the interior of the nasal cavity. The tumor had grown toward the sinus roof, but there was no association with an impacted tooth. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of

Nasal obstruction as the first symptom in a patient with a calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour (CEOT).

UNLABELLED: Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour (CEOT), also known as Pindborg tumour, is a rare, benign odontogenic neoplasm. A case of an intra-osseous CEOT in the maxilla is presented in which unilateral nasal obstruction and progressive difficulty in breathing were the first clinical symptoms. Dental practitioners might be the first clinicians to come across such tumours, during investigation of missing or non-erupted maxillary teeth, ie canines, and they should be alerted by any unilateral nasal obstruction symptoms. Diagnostic features and treatment options of the tumour are discuss

Squamous cell carcinoma of the maxilla in a patient with basal cell nevus syndrome.

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. This syndrome is characterized by developmental anomalies, such as odontogenic keratocysts of the jaws, multiple basal cell carcinomas, and skeletal abnormalities. Various neoplasms or hamartomas were observed in association with BCNS.We report on a 45-year-old female patient who presented with a tumefaction of the right maxillary region. After correlating clinical, radiographic, and histological features, diagnosis of BCNS associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the ri

Detection of an unusual inverted schneiderian papilloma by cone beam computed tomography.

An inverted schneiderian papilloma (ISP) is a rare neoplasm that affects the nasal cavity or a paranasal sinus, especially the maxillary sinus. Although histologically benign, the lesion has a high potential for local destruction, has a high recurrence rate, and presents the possibility of malignant transformation into squamous cell carcinoma. To determine the extent of the injury and possible impairment of adjacent maxillofacial structures, accurate imaging, such as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), is necessary. A 47-year-old man reported a nasal obstruction on the right side of his face

Squamous cell carcinoma at maxillary sinus: clinicopathologic data in a single Brazilian institution with review of literature.

Squamous cell carcinoma arising at maxillary sinus is a rare neoplasm, characterized by aggressive growth pattern and glooming prognosis. There are no studies describing specifically its epidemiology in the South America. The aim of the current paper is to characterize a Brazilian maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma sample and to compare such data with others worldwide relevant series. The records of the Brazilian National Cancer Institute (1997-2006) were gathered and plotted. Additionally, an extensive literature review was carry out using electronic database (PUBMED/MEDLINE and LILACS)

Modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy for recalcitrant chronic maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy (MEMM) is an accepted alternative treatment for benign sinonasal neoplasms. Its use as definitive treatment for inflammatory disease of the maxillary sinus has yet to be adequately explored. We evaluate the efficacy of MEMM for chronic maxillary sinusitis and attempt to identify factors that predispose patients for failure. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 46 patients who underwent a total of 61 medial maxillectomies for recurrent chronic maxillary sinusitis from 2003 to 2010 was performed. Data was collected regarding patient demogr

Intraoral-extramaxillary sinus approach for ligation of the maxillary artery: an anatomic study with clinical correlates.

Surgical control of severe epistaxis is usually reserved for cases refractory to more conservative techniques. We present our experience with intraoral ligation of the maxillary artery as it courses through the buccal fat pad before it enters the pterygopalatine fossa and branches posterior to the maxilla. This technique has been found useful in the control of nasal hemorrhage as well as an adjunct to other surgical procedures, such as removal of benign and malignant neoplasms involving the maxilla and paranasal sinuses. This technique was used for ligation of the maxillary artery in 20 patien
