Gastrointestinal endoscopy clinics of North America2001eng
Endoscopic mucosal resection of the esophagus was found to be safe and easy to perform. Efforts must be made to detect early m1 to m2 cancers, which are indicated for EEMR. It is necessary to perform periodic endoscopic examination. During endoscopic examination, it is important to wash the inside of the esophagus with water and perform careful observation. Also, in high-risk patients and patients with abnormalities, such as erythema, turbidity, or hypervascularity, iodine staining should be performed frequently. Patients at high risk for esophageal cancer include (1) men more than 55 years ol

Background: Chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis (CIM) is a common gastrointestinal complication of anticancer therapy, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is among the agents most frequently implicated. Betulin (BE), a lupane-type pentacyclic triterpenoid with anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective activities, has not been systematically evaluated in 5-FU-induced CIM. Purpose: This study evaluated the therapeutic effects of BE in a mouse model of 5-FU-induced CIM and examined associated histopathological, apoptotic, inflammatory, and gut microbiota changes. Methods: BALB/c mice received intraperiton

Osteopontin (OPN), a multifunctional phosphoglycoprotein also presents in saliva, plays a crucial role in tumour progression, inflammation and mucosal protection. Mucosal barrier injury due to high-dose conditioning regimen administered during autologous and allogeneic peripheral stem cell transplantation (APSCT) has neither efficient therapy nor established biomarkers. Our aim was to assess the biomarker role of OPN during APSCT, with primary focus on oral mucositis (OM). Serum and salivary OPN levels were determined by ELISA in 10 patients during APSCT at four stages of transplantation (day

Mycoplasma-induced rash and mucositis (MIRM), has been recently distinguished as an entity distinct from the spectrum of Steven-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). It is characterized by a younger age of onset, predominant mucosal lesions and sparse skin involvement, in contrast to widespread cutaneous lesions in TEN/SJS. While therapy with azithromycin and a short course of corticosteroids suffices in the majority of cases, intravenous immunoglobulin and cyclosporine may be useful in refractory cases. The authors report a 6-y-old girl with mucopurulent conjunctivitis, hem

PURPOSE: Intestinal mucositis is an important adverse effect of antineoplastic therapy, which remains without adequate treatment. The present study aimed to carry out a complete evaluation of the histopathological changes during irinotecan-induced intestinal mucositis, using the protocol most found in the pharmacological reports nowadays to better understand irinotecan toxicity and support future studies on drug discovery.
METHODS: Intestinal mucositis was induced by treating swiss mice for 4 days with irinotecan (75 mg/kg, i.p.). After 72 h post irinotecan, the mice were sacrificed and the s

Oral mucositis can result in significant dysphagia, and is the most common dose-limiting acute toxicity in head and neck cancer patients receiving chemoradiotherapy. There is a critical need to determine the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie radiotherapy-associated discomfort in patients with mucositis. The objective was to induce oral mucositis in mice, using a clinical linear accelerator, and to quantify resultant discomfort, and characterize peripheral sensitization. A clinical linear accelerator was used to deliver ionizing radiation to the oral cavity of mice. Mucositis seve

Plasma cell mucositis (PCM) is a very rare, chronic, multifocal, idiopathic, non-neoplastic plasma cell proliferative disorder of the upper aerodigestive tract. The classic clinical presentation is an intensely erythematous mucosa with surface changes described variously as papillomatous, cobblestone, nodular or velvety. It is a very rare condition <50 cases reported in literature. A 72-year-old male patient complained of sore throat, stomatodynia, dysphagia, multiple oral ulcers, enlarged swollen bleeding gums and mobile teeth. There was chronic inflammatory enlargement of the gingiva and pal

Gastrointestinal mucositis is one of the most prevalent side effects of chemotherapy. Methotrexate is a pro-oxidant compound that depletes dihydrofolate pools and is widely used in the treatment of leukemia and other malignancies. Through its effects on normal tissues with high rates of proliferation, methotrexate treatment leads to gastrointestinal mucositis. In rats, methotrexate-induced gastrointestinal mucositis is histologically characterized by crypt loss, callus fusion and atrophy, capillary dilatation, and infiltration of mixed inflammatory cells. The water-soluble dietary fiber sodium

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 50-year-old man with HIV infection (first diagnosed > 20 years ago) presented at our hospital with fulminant oral mucositis. Antiretroviral therapy (tenofovir, emtricitabine, raltegravir) had been started 2 months ago. Previously he had no opportunistic infections and no other pre-existing illnesses. He had not travelled outside Europe but stayed in Spain for several weeks during summer.
INVESTIGATIONS: Physical examination revealed swelling of the lips and severe ulcerative mucositis of the gums and pharynx. The patient complained of painful swallowing. The b

OBJECTIVES: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, lifelong condition that affects our body physiology. Untreated diabetes mellitus causes diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy, auto immune diseases, polyuria, polydipsia, loss of weight, and cardiovascular diseases. The use of medications for the treatment of diabetes mellitus causes adverse effects with long-term use, and sometimes leads to death. Today, researchers are working on the discovery of new anti-diabetes drugs from plants with low or no adverse effects. From this point of view, the present wor

One of the most common and troublesome complications of modern intensive anticancer treatments is oral mucositis. The purpose of this review is to summarize current evidence and clinical guidelines regarding its prevention and therapy. The use of keratinocyte growth factor-1, supplementary glutamine and other recently developed treatment modalities are discussed. The injury of the oral mucosa caused by antineoplastic agents promotes the local expression of multiple pro-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic molecules and eventually leads to the development of ulcers. Such lesions predispose patients t

Oral mucositis is a frequent and devastating side effect of anticancer treatments. It impairs the patient's quality of life and also can be life threatening because severe infections and delayed or incomplete anticancer treatments may result. This problem has been largely overlooked and underestimated in the past. However, recently studies have been performed to precisely identify the epidemiology, cost, consequences, physiopathology, and treatments of oral mucositis. Clinical guidelines have recently been published to help the daily management of this frequent complication. In addition, some

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced mucositis can be related to a decrease in oral neutrophils. We tested the relationship between radiation-induced mucositis and oral neutrophil counts.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Oral neutrophil counts were obtained for ten patients with head and neck cancer who received radiotherapy of the pharynx and oral cavity. Four patients received additional chemotherapy (5-FU, Mitomycin). Counts were obtained before and during treatment; four healthy volunteers were included in the study as well. For evaluation, a quantitative mouth rinse assay, including neutrophil-staining

Irradiation mucositis is defined as an inflammatory-like process of the oropharyngeal mucosa following therapeutic irradiation of patients who have head and neck cancer. Clinically, it is a serious side effect because severe mucositis can cause generalized problems (weight loss, nasogastric tube feedings) and interferes with the well-being of the patient seriously. Grading mucositis is important for the evaluation of preventive and therapeutic measures. The object of this study was to develop a scoring method based on local mucositis signs only. Four clinical local signs of mucositis were used

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections across all age groups and may also present with extrapulmonary involvement in addition to respiratory tract disease. Mycoplasma pneumoniae-induced rash and mucositis (MIRM) are rare but crucial to recognize. It is characterized by prominent but infrequent vesiculobullous and/or target-like eruptions and mucositis. This case report presents a 30-year-old patient with M. pneumoniae pneumonia who presented with a rash and mucositis, without any comorbidities.

Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating oral complication in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy, resulting in diminished quality of life and potential treatment disruptions. Oral microbiota has long been recognized as a contributing factor in the initiation and progression of radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM). Numerous studies have indicated that the radiation-induced oral microbial dysbiosis promotes the occurrence and severity of oral mucositis. Therefore, approaches that modulate oral microbial ecology are promising for the management of RIOM. Probiotics as a re
