The biosynthesis of chiral alcohols has important value and high attention. Aldo-keto reductases (AKRs) mediated reduction of prochiral carbonyl compounds is an interesting way of synthesizing single enantiomers of chiral alcohols due to the high enantio-, chemo- and regioselectivity of the enzymes. However, relatively little research has been done on characterization and apply of AKRs to asymmetric synthesis of chiral alcohols. In this study, the AKR from Candida tropicalis MYA-3404 (C. tropicalis MYA-3404), was mined and characterized. The AKR shown wider optimum temperature and pH. The AKR

We report here the discovery of fossil hominid teeth at Gladysvale, near Johannesburg in the southern Transvaal. This find makes the site the seventh in South Africa to yield australopithecine remains and the first new early hominid-bearing locality to be found in this region since 1948. Apart from the hominid specimens, our excavations at Gladysvale have added appreciably to the abundant Plio-Pleistocene fauna previously recorded from the cave deposit. The fauna indicates that savanna conditions prevailed during deposition of at least part of the fill. Preliminary faunal dating gives an age o

BACKGROUND: The Kashmir red deer or Hangul (Cervus hanglu hanglu) is the only Tarim red deer species endemic to India. With a current estimated population size of fewer than 200 individuals, this critically endangered species is confined to the greater Dachigam landscape in Jammu and Kashmir. Poaching, habitat loss and fragmentation, resource competition with livestock, and small population size are the major conservation challenges for this species.
METHODS: Blood sampling was conducted from two wild Hangul individuals during radio-collaring operations at Dachigam National Park, Kashmir in 2

The life cycle of spirochetes of the genus Borrelia includes complex networks of vertebrates and ticks. The tripartite association of Borrelia-vertebrate-tick has proved ecologically successful for these bacteria, which have become some of the most prominent tick-borne pathogens in the northern hemisphere. To keep evolutionary pace with its double-host life history, Borrelia must adapt to the evolutionary pressures exerted by both sets of hosts. In this review, we attempt to reconcile functional, phylogenetic, and ecological perspectives to propose a coherent scenario of Borrelia evolution. Av

Sporotrichosis is one of the most frequent subcutaneous fungal infections in humans and animals caused by members of the plant-associated, dimorphic genus Sporothrix. Three of the four medically important Sporothrix species found in Brazil have been considered asexual as no sexual stage has ever been reported in Sporothrix schenckii, Sporothrix brasiliensis, or Sporothrix globosa. We have identified the mating type (MAT) loci in the S. schenckii (strain 1099-18/ATCC MYA-4821) and S. brasiliensis (strain 5110/ATCC MYA-4823) genomes by using comparative genomic approaches to determine the mating

PURPOSE: Inactivating filamentous fungi (molds) reduce toxin production and transmission. This study evaluated the efficacy of formic acid (FA) fumigation to identify optimal conditions and its effects on fungal morphology. We aim to develop an efficient inactivation protocol for molds and provide valuable insights into laboratory techniques for fungal inactivation.
METHODS: Initially, 238 clinical isolates from 23 species of molds were evaluated for the inactivation efficacy of formic acid, formaldehyde, and peracetic acid. After identifying the optimal sterilizing agent, 188 isolates from 1

Fascioliasis is a highly pathogenic disease affecting humans and livestock worldwide. It is caused by the liver flukes Fasciola hepatica transmitted by Galba/Fossaria lymnaeid snails in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania, and F. gigantica transmitted by Radix lymnaeids in Africa and Asia. An evident founder effect appears in genetic studies as the consequence of their spread by human-guided movements of domestic ruminants, equines and Old World camelids in the post-domestication period from the beginning of the Neolithic. Establishing the geographical origins of fasciolid expansion

BACKGROUND: Living gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates) comprise two divisions, Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fishes, including euchondrichthyans with prismatic calcified cartilage, and extinct stem chondrichthyans) and Osteichthyes (bony fishes including tetrapods). Most of the early chondrichthyan ('shark') record is based upon isolated teeth, spines, and scales, with the oldest articulated sharks that exhibit major diagnostic characters of the group--prismatic calcified cartilage and pelvic claspers in males--being from the latest Devonian, c. 360 Mya. This paucity of information about early ch

The longtailed rattlesnakes of western Mexico represent an enigmatic group of poorly known venomous snake species: Crotalus ericsmithi, C. lannomi, and C. stejnegeri. In the 120 years since their discovery, fewer than twenty individuals have been deposited in natural history collections worldwide. These three species share similar morphological traits, including a particularly long tail that has been interpreted as either an ancestral condition among rattlesnakes or as derived within the longtailed group. An understanding of the phylogenetic distinctiveness and relationships among the longtail

The family Bagridae comprises a diverse group of freshwater catfishes distributed throughout Asia and Africa; however, several genera remain poorly represented in genomic studies. Among them, the monotypic genus Bagroides has lacked complete mitochondrial genomic data, limiting our understanding of its evolutionary history and phylogenetic position. Here, we report the first complete mitochondrial genome of Bagroides melapterus, providing the inaugural mitogenomic resource for the genus. The complete mitogenome of B. melapterus, a circular molecule of 16,542 bp with a GC content of 43.6%, was

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Eocene foliage formerly attributed to the extant araliaceous genus Oreopanax was found attached to twigs bearing inflorescences and infructescences unlike those of Araliaceae. Using newly observable characters of phyllotaxy, vegetative and floral buds, infructescences and seeds, we sought to reassess the affinities of this strange angiosperm.
METHODS: Fossils were studied from the Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation from near Bonanza, Utah and Douglas Pass, Colorado (~47 Mya). Macrofossil impression remains were investigated by low-angle reflected light, a

BACKGROUND: Although cutaneous ulcers (CU) in the tropics is frequently attributed to Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue, the causative agent of yaws, Haemophilus ducreyi has emerged as a major cause of CU in yaws-endemic regions of the South Pacific islands and Africa. H. ducreyi is generally susceptible to macrolides, but CU strains persist after mass drug administration of azithromycin for yaws or trachoma. H. ducreyi also causes genital ulcers (GU) and was thought to be exclusively transmitted by microabrasions that occur during sex. In human volunteers, the GU strain 35000HP does not

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease of cloven-hoofed animals with serious economic consequences. FMD is endemic in Southeast Asia (SEA) and East Asia (EA) with the circulation of multiple serotypes, posing a threat to Australia and other FMD-free countries. Although vaccination is one of the most important control measures to prevent FMD outbreaks, the available vaccines may not be able to provide enough cross-protection against the FMD viruses (FMDVs) circulating in these countries due to the incursion of new lineages and sub-lineages as experienced in South Korea duri

Scutiger boulengeri is an amphibian distributed in high-altitude mountainous environments on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and its surrounding regions. However, its mitochondrial genomic characteristics and phylogenetic position remain to be further investigated. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of S. boulengeri was sequenced and assembled and a preliminary analysis conducted. The results revealed that the mitochondrial genome of S. boulengeri is 49,991 bp in length and comprises 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and an expanded non-coding region encompa

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease of cloven-footed livestock caused by foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). FMD has significant impacts on farmers and national economies. The evolution and mutation of FMDV have contributed to the emergence of new strains of FMDV. Sequences of VP1 from 11 FMDV isolates in the Mekong Delta Provinces were obtained by Sanger sequencing technology. The phylogenetic analysis of VP1 sequence elucidated that 8 FMDV isolates including O-VN-CTU-VL01 (PP897837), O-VN-CTU-VL02 (PP897838), O-VN-CTU-TV01 (PP897840), O-VN-CTU-TV02 (PP897841),

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is an economically devastating animal disease. There are seven serotypes, A, O, C, Asia 1, Southern African Territories 1, 2, and 3 (SAT1, SAT2, and SAT3), among which serotype O shows the greatest distribution worldwide. Specifically, the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001 lineage, which was reported in India in 2001, has since emerged worldwide, with the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d and O/ME-SA/Ind-2001e sublineages recently emerging in North Africa, Middle East Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. The antigenic relationship (r1) value for the O1 Manisa and O/Mya-98 lineage inactivated vacci

New genes and gene functions are key drivers of evolutionary innovation. Venomous animals, such as cone snails, provide striking examples of gene innovation, yet the mechanisms by which toxins arise remain poorly understood. Using the Conus textile genome, we uncover how neuropeptide genes were recruited into the venom and neofunctionalized as doppelgänger toxins. We identify over 20 independent recruitment events that evolved dynamically across the Conus lineage. Rather than arising from ohnologs of a whole-genome duplication event ∼200 mya, these toxins evolved through diverse mechanisms, in

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) remains a very serious barrier to agricultural development and the international trade of animals and animal products. Recently, serotype O has been the most prevalent FMDV serotype in China, and it has evolved into four different lineages: O/SEA/Mya-98, O/ME-SA/PanAsia, O/ME-SA/Ind-2001 and O/Cathay. PanAsia-2, belonging to the O/ME-SA topotype, is prevalent in neighbouring countries and poses the risk of cross-border spread in China. This study aimed to develop a promising vaccine candidate strain that can not only provide the best protection against all serotype

The paracingulate sulcus -PCGS- has been considered for a long time to be specific to the human brain. Its presence/absence has been discussed in relation to interindividual variability of personality traits and cognitive abilities. Recently, a putative PCGS has been observed in chimpanzee brains. To demonstrate that this newly discovered sulcus is the homologue of the PCGS in the human brain, we analyzed cytoarchitectonic and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data in chimpanzee brains which did or did not display a PCGS. The results show that the organization of the mid-cing

PREMISE: Tulips are one of the best-known geophytes, but their taxonomy remains convoluted and their evolutionary history poorly understood. Here, we used plastid genomes to identify some issues with current classification, understand the diversification history of the genus, and identify potential species linked to historical cultivation.
METHODS: We gathered a large number of tulip specimens from living collections, herbaria, and online sources and through extensive fieldwork to infer maximum likelihood phylogenies of the plastid genomes of Tulipa (Liliaceae), representing ~86% of accepted
