A patient is described who in addition to having the 48, XXXY Klinefelter syndrome has the autosomal dominant nail-patella syndrome, inherited through his mother from the grandfather. Clinical signs of both syndromes were found. Chromosomal investigation with BUDR incorporation and acridine orange staining showed that one X chromosome stained intensively, while the other X chromosomes were elongated and weakly stained. Difference in degree of stretching of the supernumerary chromosomes was noted. The occurrence of the two rare syndromes in the same patient is assumed to be fortuitous.

We report on the case of a 36 year-old woman with nail-patella syndrome that was detected following a plain roentgenogram of the abdomen showing iliac horns. The nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is a hereditary disorder of tissues of ectodermal and mesodermal origin transmitted as an autosomal-dominant trait. Complete NPS is characterised by a series of skeletal disorders and specific nephropathy; in the recent years some other diseases associated with NPS were described, whereas many patients exist with incomplete NPS.

Nail-patella syndrome (NPS; OMIM #161200) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by developmental defects in dorsal limb structures, kidneys, and eyes. The incidence of NPS is attributed to variations in the LMX1B gene. In this report, we present a novel LMX1B variation identified in a Chinese family affected by NPS. The proband, a 15-year-old male, exhibited a history of proteinuria and microscopic hematuria accompanied by renal dysfunction, nail dysplasia, bilateral patellar dysplasia, bilateral shoulder and elbow joint dysplasia and iliac horns. Histological examination revealed mi

We report a patient with nail patella syndrome associated with congenital permanent dislocation of the patella successfully operated on using a modified Stanisavljevic method. The patient, a 26-year-old woman, complained of inability to completely extend her right knee joint. She had occasionally experienced the "giving way" phenomenon since childhood, but she had not received any treatment since birth. Physical examination showed that all fingernails were deformed, with longitudinal striations, while the lunules were of an abnormal triangular shape or were missing. Both patellae were palpably

Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by skeletal and renal abnormalities. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on four main features: nail dysplasia, patellar and elbow abnormalities, and the presence of iliac horns. NPS affects approximately 1 in 50,000 individuals. Its presentation is highly heterogeneous, even within families, which may delay recognition. Pathogenic variants have been identified in the LMX1B gene located on chromosome 9q34. Although best known for its orthopedic manifestations, NPS may also involve other systems, notably the kidn

RATIONALE: Nail-patella syndrome (NPS), a rare genetic disorder with multisystemic implications that affects the kidneys, joints, bones, and nails, exhibits significant phenotypic heterogeneity, leading to diverse clinical presentations and prompting patients to seek medical attention. This report details the case of a male patient presenting with inflammatory back pain, whose subsequent diagnostic evaluations revealed skeletal anomalies consistent with NPS.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A male patient in his mid-thirties was diagnosed with inflammatory back pain associated with NPS.
DIAGNOSES: The pati

Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is a rare disorder characterized by abnormal development of ectodermal and mesodermal tissues. Classically, NPS presents as a triad of nail dysplasia, dysplastic patellae, and bony exostoses of the ilia known as "iliac horns." Apart from dermatological and skeletal abnormalities, patients may also have involvement of ophthalmologic and renal systems. The underlying molecular etiology in NPS is the mutation of LMX1B homeobox gene which results in loss of function of its protein also called LMX1B, a DNA-binding protein belonging to the larger LIM-homeodomain transcrip

A 14-year-old girl and her 47-year-old father presented with fingernails that were hypoplastic, spoon-shaped and ridged since birth. Fingertip dermatitis and paronychia were also observed in the daughter, which had been present since birth and had progressively worsened. The daughter denied trauma to her fingernails or chronic exposure to irritants and allergens. She had previously tried topical corticosteroids for 18 months without any benefit. We put forward the possibility of chronic paronychia and fingertip dermatitis, refractory to topical corticosteroids, as associations of digital nail-

This is a case report of an Irish family displaying classical features of Nail-Patella Syndrome--also known as Osteo-onycho Dystrophy--involving four members over three generations. This rare autosomal dominant disorder is well defined with four classical characteristics: dysplasia of finger nails, hypoplastic or absent patellae, hypoplasia of the head of the radius and often the capitulum of the humerus leading to subluxation or dislocation of the radial head and iliac prominences, known as iliac horns which are usually bilateral and symmetrical. Renal dysfunction is also commonly reported. T

Hereditary onycho-osteodysplasia or nail-patella syndrome is an uncommon familial musculoskeletal condition that is primarily seen initially in orthopaedic clinics. This three-generation familial review identifies three affected family members, one of whom demonstrated spondylolisthesis, a condition not previously associated with nail-patella syndrome. All affected family members demonstrated the typical radial nail dysplasias, hypoplastic patellae, iliac horns, and posterior dislocation of the radial heads. Overgrowth of the medial femoral condyles caused valgus deformities of the knees that

A case of a fully developed hereditary onycho-osteo-arthrodysplasia (nail-patella syndrome) is presented. The typical signs, such as the iliac horns or variations of the knees, cubitals and nails should be familiar to every radiologist. The associated nephropathy seems to be caused by typical changes in the glomerular basement membrane seen in electron microscopy. Asymptomatic proteinuria is found in about 60% of the cases, in 5.5-8% the disease leads to the necessity of haemodialysis because of renal insufficiency. Hence, early diagnosis is very important.

Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) or hereditary onycho-osteodyaplasia is a rare genetic condition involving a mutation in the LMX1B gene affecting nails, elbows, knees, and pelvis. Due to the regulatory functions of the gene in many developmental processes through the body, patients with NPS experience wide-ranging musculoskeletal problems including patellar instability, fingernail anomalies, iliac exostoses/horns, and elbow abnormalities. The patellar changes often involve aplasia, hypoplasia, and chronic dislocation. Due to these musculoskeletal involvement, arthritis of joints can occur in patien

Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is an autosomal-dominant disease caused by LMX1B mutations and is characterized by dysplastic nails, absent or hypoplastic patellae, elbow dysplasia, and iliac horns. Renal involvement is the major determinant of the prognosis for NPS. Patients often present with varying degrees of proteinuria or hematuria, and can occasionally progress to chronic renal failure. Recent genetic analysis has found that some mutations in the homeodomain of LMX1B cause isolated nephropathy without nail, patellar or skeletal abnormality (LMX1B-associated nephropathy). The classic term "n

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is an uncommon cause of acute coronary syndrome, occurring predominantly in women during and immediately after pregnancy; it carries a mortality rate of greater than 50%. While the exact etiology is unknown, possible contributing factors include pregnancy-related hormonal, connective tissue and hemodynamic changes. We present a case of a 35-year-old multigravid woman with Nail-Patella syndrome who developed an acute myocardial infarction secondary to spontaneous coronary artery dissection during labor which was not diagnosed until after delivery. We hypot

The nail patella syndrome (NPS1) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterised by dysplasia of the finger nails and skeletal abnormalities. NPS1 has been mapped to 9q34, to a 1 cM interval between D9S315 and the adenylate kinase gene (AK1). We have mapped the breakpoints within the candidate NPS1 region in two unrelated patients with balanced translocations. One patient [46,XY,t(1;9)(q32.1;q34)] was detected during a systematic survey of old cytogenetic files in Denmark and southern Sweden. The other patient [46,XY,t(9;17)(q34.1;q25)] was reported previously. D9S315 and AK1 were used to isol

A 54 years old female with significant impairment of renal function is presented. On physical examination, the presence of dystrophic nails, elbow dysplasia and prominent iliac horns. Familial study showed similar nail and bone deformities in 3 of six sons. The nail patella syndrome diagnosis was based on these findings. This is a rare autosomal dominant hereditary disease, probably related to congenital alterations in collagen metabolism. Clinical characteristics include bone abnormalities that principally involve knees and elbows, nail alterations and the presence of iliac horns, that are co
