Sebaceous Neoplasms With Rippled, Labyrinthine/Sinusoidal, Petaloid, and Carcinoid-Like Patterns: A Study of 57 Cases Validating Their Occurrence as a Morphological Spectrum and Showing No Significant Association With Muir-Torre Syndrome or DNA Mismatch Repair Protein Deficiency.

Sebaceous neoplasms with an organoid pattern (rippled, labyrinthine/sinusoidal, carcinoid-like, and petaloid) are rare. Previous studies suggested that the above patterns likely represent variations along a morphological continuum. The objectives of this study were to (1) validate this proposition by studying a large number of cases, (2) determine whether there are specific associations with clinical features, (3) establish their frequency, and (4) determine whether they have any association with Muir-Torre syndrome. Fifty-seven sebaceous neoplasms (54 sebaceomas and 3 sebaceous carcinomas) wi

Cardiac Paraganglioma Arising From the Right Atrioventricular Groove in a Paraganglioma-Pheochromocytoma Family Syndrome With Evidence of SDHB Gene Mutation: An Unusual Presentation.

Primary cardiac paragangliomas are extremely rare. Recently this neoplasm has been associated with a familiar syndrome as a result of mutation of genes that encode proteins in the mitochondrial complex II. We report a case of a 46-year-old woman having cases of vertebral paraganglioma in her family showing an unusual anatomic and clinical presentation of cardiac paraganglioma and expressing a genetic mutation never associated before with cardiac localization of this neoplasm.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma of the liver and lung: a case report with morphohological and immunohistochemical features of tumor.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma is extremely rare neoplasm that mainly occurs in the lymph nodes. Only 45 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We report a case of this sarcoma arising from the liver and lung, a previosly unreported site for this neoplasm. An 19-year-old girl deteriorated rapidly after artificial abortion and died 4 weeks later. Autopsy showed markedly enlarged liver and lung with numerous nodules up to 0.5 centimeters in diameter. Microscopically, nodules was composed of large pleomorphic cells that were immunohistochemically positive for proteins S-100 a

Merkel cell carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive neuroendocrine cutaneous neoplasm with a variable clinical presentation. Histologically, it is a predominantly dermal-based lesion composed of monotonous small round cells with scanty cytoplasm, often difficult to differentiate from small round cell tumors, metastatic small cell carcinoma, blastic hematologic malignancies, and melanoma. The malignant cells express both epithelial and neuroendocrine immunohistochemical markers, a unique feature that helps differentiate this neoplasm from other entities. The pathogenesis of Merkel cell carcinoma

Immunological and ultrastructural characterization of true histiocytic lymphoma in the northern pike, Esox lucius L.

An epidemic of a malignant neoplasm occurs in northern pike, Esox lucius L., from the Aland Islands of Finland. The neoplasm is morphologically similar to other pike hemic tumors reported in other areas of the world. Pike normal tissues showed evolutionary conservation with the mammalian intermediate filament proteins cytokeratin, desmin, vimentin, neurofilament protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein; tumor cells are positive for vimentin, suggesting that the neoplasm is of mesenchymal origin. Hemic tissue mononuclear cells undergo polyclonal stimulation by the known mammalian T- and B-l

Cauda equina tumor with ependymal and paraganglionic differentiation.

We describe the case of a 31-year-old woman who was first treated for a pigmented choroid plexus papilloma of the fourth ventricle. Ten year later, she developed a new tumor in the region of the cauda equina. This second neoplasm contained areas of papillary ependymoma that displayed phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin-positive glial fibers and immunoreactivity for glial fibrillary acidic and S-100 proteins. Areas of ependymoma merged with others that displayed the appearance of a paraganglioma, including lobules and nests of chief cells immunoreactive for neuron-specific enolase, synaptophysin,

Immunohistological studies on neoplasms of female and male Onchocerca volvulus: filarial origin and absence of Wolbachia from tumor cells.

Up to 5% of untreated female Onchocerca volvulus filariae develop potentially fatal pleomorphic neoplasms, whose incidence is increased following ivermectin treatment. We studied the occurrence of 8 filarial proteins and of Wolbachia endobacteria in the tumor cells. Onchocercomas from patients, untreated and treated with antibiotics and anthelminthics, were examined by immunohistology. Neoplasms were diagnosed in 112 of 3587 female and in 2 of 1570 male O. volvulus. The following proteins and other compounds of O. volvulus were expressed in the cells of the neoplasms: glutathione S-transferase

Molecular analysis of oncogenes, ras family genes (N-ras, K-ras, H-ras), myc family genes (c-myc, N-myc) and mdm2 in natural killer cell neoplasms.

Natural killer (NK) cell neoplasms are rare diseases. Frequent abnormalities of the tumor suppressor genes Rb, p53, p15INK4B, p16INK4A and p14ARF have been reported. However, no oncogenes associated with tumorigenesis of NK cell neoplasms have been reported so far. We analyzed the status of oncogenes including N-ras, K-ras, H-ras, c-myc, N-myc and mdm2 by Southern blot, PCR-SSCP, western blot analysis and immunohistochemical staining. We analyzed four cell lines derived from NK cell neoplasms and 31 clinical samples with five subclasses of NK cell neoplasms. We found no point mutations of the

NTRK rearranged spindle cell neoplasm of the uterine cervix: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) rearranged spindle cell neoplasm is an emerging group of molecularly defined rare soft tissue tumors, often presenting with a monotonous spindle cell morphology, infiltrative growth, and co-expression of S-100 and CD34 proteins by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Accurate diagnosis necessitates the combination of morphology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular test results, with next-generation sequencing (NGS) as the gold standard. We present a rare case of NTRK rearranged spindle cell neoplasm of the uterine cervix and review the literature

FOP is a centriolar satellite protein involved in ciliogenesis.

Centriolar satellites are proteinaceous granules that are often clustered around the centrosome. Although centriolar satellites have been implicated in protein trafficking in relation to the centrosome and cilium, the details of their function and composition remain unknown. FOP (FGFR1 Oncogene Partner) is a known centrosome protein with homology to the centriolar satellite proteins FOR20 and OFD1. We find that FOP partially co-localizes with the satellite component PCM1 in a cell cycle-dependent manner, similarly to the satellite and cilium component BBS4. As for BBS4, FOP localization to sat

The Macro-Autophagy-Related Protein Beclin-1 Immunohistochemical Expression Correlates With Tumor Cell Type and Clinical Behavior of Uveal Melanoma.

Uveal melanoma, in spite of its rarity, represents the most common primitive intraocular malignant neoplasm of the adults; it affects choroid, ciliary bodied and iris and remains clinically silent for a long time, being accidentally discovered by routine ophthalmic exams. Prognosis of uveal melanoma is poor and frequently characterized by liver metastases, within 10-15 years from diagnosis. Autophagy is a multi-step catabolic process by which cells remove damaged organelles and proteins and recycle nutrients. It has been hypothesized that in early stages of tumorigenesis autophagy has a tumor

Myeloid transformation of plasma cell myeloma: molecular evidence of clonal evolution revealed by next generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell myeloma (PCM) is a neoplasm of terminally differentiated B lymphocytes with molecular heterogeneity. Although therapy-related myeloid neoplasms are common in plasma cell myeloma patients after chemotherapy, transdifferentiation of plasma cell myeloma into myeloid neoplasms has not been reported in literature. Here we report a very rare case of myeloid neoplasm transformed from plasma cell myeloma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old man with a history of plasma cell myeloma with IGH-MAF gene rearrangement and RAS/RAF mutations developed multiple soft tissue lesions one ye

Her-2 expression in cutaneous eccrine and apocrine neoplasms.

Cutaneous eccrine and apocrine glands have many histologic and immunologic similarities to ducts and acini of the breast. Thus, differentiating a primary cutaneous process from a metastatic breast carcinoma can be nearly impossible. In all, 10-34% of breast carcinomas overexpress HER-2 protein, a membrane-associated protein that functions in cell differentiation, adhesion and motility. As expression of this gene in cutaneous neoplasms has not been well characterized, we sought to determine HER-2 expression in a sample of benign and malignant cutaneous eccrine and apocrine neoplasms and to dete

New progress in the study of germline susceptibility genes of myeloid neoplasms.

In 2016, the World Health Organization incorporated 'myeloid neoplasms with germline predisposition' into its classification of tumors of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues, revealing the important role of germline mutations in certain myeloid neoplasms, particularly myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. The awareness of germline susceptibility has increased, and some patients with myeloid neoplasms present with a preexisting disorder or organ dysfunction. In such cases, mutations in genes including CCAAT enhancer binding protein α (CEBPA), DEAD (Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp) box polypeptide

Loss of BAP1 Protein Expression by Immunohistochemistry in the Salivary Duct Carcinoma Component of an Intracapsular Carcinoma ex Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Parotid Gland.

BACKGROUND: BRCA1-associated protein 1 (BAP1) is a tumor suppressor gene that is altered in a variety of neoplasms as well as in BAP1 tumor predisposition syndrome. BAP1 alterations are associated with aggressive behavior in some malignancies and may have treatment implications in future. We present the first documented case of loss of BAP1 protein expression by immunohistochemistry in the salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) component of an intracapsular carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) in the context of molecular loss of function of BAP1 in the neoplasm. METHODS: A woman of approximately 55

[Antigenic expression in human choroid plexus carcinoma: report of 2 cases].

Primary neoplasms of choroid plexus are rare. Six morphological variants have been described: papillary, cystic, acinar, mucus-secreting, oncocytic, and anaplastic. The anaplastic variant, the so-called choroid plexus carcinoma, is the rarest of all and can metastasize. The differential diagnosis of the anaplastic variant of choroid plexus neoplasms with adenocarcinomas, melanomas and undifferentiated neoplasms can be troublesome chiefly in adults. The now large use of immunocytochemical techniques in tissue section has become a powerful tool in the analysis of cell lineages, tumoral and non-t

Increased expression of the src proto-oncogene in hairy cell leukemia and a subgroup of B-cell lymphomas.

The c-src proto-oncogene encodes a M(r) 60,000 phosphoprotein, pp60c-src, with tyrosine-specific protein kinase activity. We have used an immune complex protein kinase assay for pp60c-src to analyze a spectrum of B-cell neoplasms. pp60c-src activity was elevated in all five hairy cell leukemia specimens and in a number of the large cell and immunoblastic lymphomas; neoplasms representing later stages in B-cell development. pp60c-src activity was low in neoplastic cells which correspond to early and intermediate stages in B-cell development (acute and chronic lymphatic leukemia, lymphoblastic l

Extraocular sebaceous carcinoma in situ: report of three cases and review of the literature.

Extraocular sebaceous carcinoma is a rare neoplasm. Purely in situ extraocular sebaceous carcinoma is extremely rare and somewhat controversial. Review of the literature reveals only three reported cases, two of which involved the head and neck and one the arm. The ones on the head and neck arose in association with an actinic keratosis. We report three cases of extraocular sebaceous carcinoma in situ and describe the first report of immunoperoxidase screening for mismatch repair proteins in such tumors.
