Occupational Stress in the Neuroticism-Burnout Link: An Exploratory Examination of Physiological Contributions.

OBJECTIVE: Burnout is a debilitating consequence of chronic occupational stress, yet few studies have simultaneously examined its psychological and physiological correlates. This study tested a mediation model linking neuroticism to burnout, with perceived stress as the primary mediator and wearable-derived physiological indices as an exploratory pathway. METHODS: A total of 150 Korean working adults in high-stress occupations completed standardized measures of neuroticism, perceived occupational stress, and burnout. Resting-state frontal electroencephalography (EEG) and photoplethysmography

Effects of a Theory-Based Smartphone Intervention to Decrease Neuroticism in the General Public.

Many people wish to be less neurotic, and such decreases could have far-reaching benefits, but evidence on nonclinical interventions and change mechanisms is limited. Using a German-speaking, adult sample (N = 446), we conducted a 6-week, smartphone-based randomized controlled intervention to test effects of theory-based strategies targeting different neuroticism levels and aspects. Across groups, there were significant self-report effects (deffect = -0.22 to -0.37) that persisted through a 2-month follow-up (deffect = -0.16 to -0.33), and follow-up peer-report effects for one of two measures

Effects of neuroticism on suicide risk in major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the primary cause of death in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD). Among various personality traits, neuroticism is particularly relevant to suicide risk. However, its role in MDD and BD has not been examined sufficiently. This study characterized neuroticism in patients with MDD or BD, and analyzed the association between neuroticism and suicide risk in these patients. METHODS: This study collected demographic information and personality traits of MDD and BD patients. Group differences were assessed using t-tests, chi-square tests, an

Neuroticism, Internalizing Psychopathology, and Affective Reactions to Thought Content in Daily Life.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined affective reactions to thought content (TC) in daily life and the influence of neuroticism and internalizing symptoms. METHODS: Community young adults (N = 119; n = 80 with elevated depression/anxiety) completed assessments of neuroticism, internalizing symptoms, and daily diary measures of TC and positive/negative affect for seven consecutive days (N = 758 observations). Multilevel confirmatory factor analysis (MCFA) examined the structure of TC. Multilevel models examined TC-affect relationships and moderation by neuroticism and internalizing symptoms. RES

Cortical gyrification patterns associated with neuroticism in panic disorder and healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated an association between neuroticism and alterations in cortical folding. However, few studies have investigated the relation between neuroticism and gyrification in panic disorder (PD) patients and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: This study included 102 PD patients and 128 HC. Neuroticism, anxiety symptomatology, ways of coping strategies, and health-related quality of life was evaluated. Voxel-wise correlation analyses using FreeSurfer were conducted to determine the neural correlates of neuroticism related to cortical gyrification. RESULTS: As n

The genetics of neuroticism: Insights from the Maudsley rat model and human studies.

We examine some of the genetic features of neuroticism (N) taking as an animal model the Maudsley Reactive (MR) and Maudsley Nonreactive (MNR) rat strains which were selectively bred, respectively, for high and low open-field defecation (OFD) starting in the late 1950s. To draw analogies with human genetic studies, we explore the genetic correlation of N with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We review progress with the rat model and developments in the field of human complex trait genetics, including genetic association studies that relate to current understanding of the genetics of N. The wide

Neuroticism and the Risk of Atrial Fibrillation: An Observational Epidemiologic and Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: The association between neuroticism and atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the epidemiological and causal relationships between neuroticism and AF. METHODS: Individuals without AF history were selected From the UK Biobank nationwide prospective cohort study. Participants were divided into 2 groups (high and low) based on the median summary score from a self-questionnaire of 12 neurotic behavior domains. The 10-year AF risk was compared between the neuroticism score groups using inverse probability of treatment weighting. The causal re

Locus coeruleus catecholamines link neuroticism and vulnerability to tau pathology in aging.

Higher neuroticism is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), and is implicated in disordered stress responses. The locus coeruleus (LC)-catecholamine system is activated during perceived threat and is a centerpiece of developing models of the pathophysiology of AD, as it is the first brain region to develop abnormal tau. We examined relationships among the "Big 5" personality traits, LC catecholamine synthesis capacity measured with [18F]Fluoro-m-tyrosine PET, and tau burden measured with [18F]Flortaucipir PET in cognitively normal older adults (n = 47). β-amyloid (Aβ) status was determin

Correlation between Gut Microbiota and Six Facets of Neuroticism in Korean Adults.

A person high in neuroticism is more likely to experience anxiety, stress, worry, fear, anger, and depression. Previous studies have shown that the gut microbiota can influence personality and mental disorders, including stress, anxiety, and depression, through the gut-brain axis. Here, we investigated the correlations between the sub-facet of neuroticism and gut microbiota using the Revised NEO Personality Inventory and the 16S rRNA gene sequencing data 784 adults. We found that the high anxiety and vulnerability group showed significantly lower richness in microbial diversity than a group wi

Neuroticism and anxious attachment as potential vulnerability factors of repeat suicide attempts.

The recurrence risk of suicide attempts can reach 50% in the first year, each attempt increasing suicide-risk by 32%. No screening tool efficiently identifies potential repeat suicide attempters who are too often regarded as borderline personality. Our aim was to identify individual and interpersonal psychopathological dimensions that could represent a vulnerability to repeat suicide attempts. Sixty first-time and repeat suicide attempters consecutively admitted in emergency rooms were compared for fundamental dimensions of personality, patterns of attachment, personality and mental disorders

Neuroticism as a risk factor for child abuse in victims of childhood sexual abuse.

Findings on the relationship of experienced sexual abuse and abuse behavior in adulthood are ambiguous. However, associations between experienced abuse and neuroticism as well as between neuroticism and active child abuse have been reported repeatedly. In our study, we compared pedosexual child abusers with consumers of internet child pornography and control subjects with adult-sexual preference with regard to traumatic childhood experience (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, CTQ), personality traits (NEO - Personality Inventory - Revised, NEO-PI-R), and sexual abnormalities (Multiphasic Sex Inve

Neuroticism related differences in the functional neuroanatomical correlates of multitasking. An fMRI study.

It is known that neuroticism impairs cognitive performance mostly in difficult tasks, but not so much in easier tasks. One pervasive situation of this type is multitasking, in which the combination of two simple tasks creates a highly demanding dual-task, and consequently high neurotics show higher dual-task costs than low neurotics. However, the functional neuroanatomical correlates of these additional performance impairments in high neurotics are unknown. To test for this, we assessed brain activity by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 17 low and 15 high neurotics whil

Negative and positive life events are associated with small but lasting change in neuroticism.

BACKGROUND: High neuroticism is prospectively associated with psychopathology and physical health. However, within-subject changes in neuroticism due to life experiences (LEs) or state effects of current psychopathology are largely unexplored. In this 2-year follow-up study, four hypotheses were tested: (1) positive LEs (PLEs) decrease and negative LEs (NLEs) increase neuroticism; (2) LE-driven change in neuroticism is partly long-lasting; and (3) partly independent of LE-driven changes in anxiety/depression; and (4) childhood adversity (before age 16 years) moderates the influence of NLEs/PLE

Neuroticism and cardiovascular response in women: evidence of effects on blood pressure recovery.

Neuroticism is a unifying personality trait that underlies a number of psychosocial risk factors for cardiovascular disease. One means by which Neuroticism may influence health risk is through effects on cardiovascular reactivity and recovery. Eighty-six women scoring high or low in Neuroticism took part in a paired interpersonal stressor task with a laboratory confederate. Conditions differed on the basis of the confederate's interpersonal behavior: hostile, neutral, or friendly. Neuroticism interacted with condition to affect blood pressure recovery such that women high in Neuroticism showed

A population-based twin study of the relationship between neuroticism and internalizing disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The anxiety and depressive disorders exhibit high levels of lifetime comorbidity with one another. The authors examined how genetic and environmental factors shared by the personality trait neuroticism and seven internalizing disorders may help explain this comorbidity. METHOD: Lifetime major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, animal phobia, situational phobia, and neuroticism were assessed in over 9,000 twins from male-male, female-female, and opposite-sex pairs through structured diagnostic interviews. Neuroticism increased risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease: Evidence from bidirectional Mendelian randomization.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common gastrointestinal disorder that severely reduces quality of life. Emerging data suggest that neuroticism, a personality trait associated with increased stress reactivity and sensitivity to physiological sensations, may contribute to GERD susceptibility. However, the causality remains unknown. A bidirectional Mendelian Randomization (MR) study was conducted to evaluate the causal link between neuroticism and GERD. Genetic data for neuroticism were sourced from the UK Biobank's genome-wide association study (GWAS) (n = 3,80,506), while GERD-assoc

Association between specific neuroticism symptoms and cardiovascular disease: insights from genetic analysis.

Although neuroticism has been linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD), the etiological relevance of individual neuroticism symptoms remains poorly understood. In this study, we employed Linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) and systematic Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to examine the potential causal effects of specific neuroticism symptoms on CVD. We obtained summary-level data on 13 specific neuroticism symptoms from the UK Biobank (ranging from 366,726-380,506 participants). Summary statistics for CVD originated from three European-descent GWASs with a total of 799,534 partic

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Neuroticism (Stress Vulnerability): A Pilot Randomized Study.

OBJECTIVE: Neuroticism, a characteristic associated with increased stress vulnerability and the tendency to experience distress, is strongly linked to risk of different forms of psychopathology. However, there are few evidence-based interventions to target neuroticism. This pilot study investigated the efficacy and acceptability of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) compared with an online self-help intervention for individuals with high levels of neuroticism. The MBCT was modified to address psychological processes that are characteristic of neuroticism. METHOD: Participants with hig

Perceived Emotion Control Moderates the Relationship between Neuroticism and Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

The relationships between neuroticism, perceived emotion control, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) severity were examined in 293 individuals diagnosed with GAD at a specialty anxiety disorders clinic. Hierarchical regression analyses performed within a structural equation modeling framework revealed that (1) neuroticism and perceived emotion control both predicted a latent variable of GAD in the expected direction, and (2) perceived emotion control moderated the relationship between neuroticism and GAD severity, such that lower levels of perceived emotion control were associated with a s

Detrimental influence of high neuroticism on visuospatial selective attention: behavioral and ERP evidence.

Neuroticism constitutes a risk factor for mood disorders and cognitive impairment, but its impact on visuospatial selective attention remains unclear, especially in young people. Our study aimed to explore the detrimental influence of neuroticism and its underlying electrophysiological mechanisms. Participants (31 with low neuroticism and 31 with high neuroticism) underwent electrocardiogram (EEG) signal acquisition and event-related potentials (ERP) component identification while performing attention search tasks. High-neuroticism participants showed a significant decline in the accuracy rela
