Corneal foreign bodies--first aid, treatment, and outcomes. Skills review for an occupational health setting.

Eye injuries from foreign body incidents remain prevalent in the workplace setting. Often the professional nurse provides the first line of treatment. The informal class presented at the authors' facility offered a comprehensive, organized presentation of a common injury encountered in the practice of occupational health nursing. Strenghts of the presentation included handouts demonstrating eye eversion technique and a flip chart summarizing the content to be placed in each medical station as quick reference. One challenge involved presenting the information to all nurses. The site encompasses

Machine safety: proper safeguarding techniques.

1. OSHA mandates certain safeguarding of machinery to prevent accidents and protect machine operators. OSHA specifies moving parts that must be guarded and sets criteria for the guards. 2. A 1989 OSHA standard for lockout/tagout requires locking the energy source during maintenance, periodically inspecting for power transmission, and training maintenance workers. 3. In an amputation emergency, first aid for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, shock, and bleeding are the first considerations. The amputated part should be wrapped in moist gauze, placed in a sealed plastic bag, and placed in a contain

Heat stress: its effect and control.

Heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are major disorders resulting from the body's reaction to overexposure to hot environments. Physiological and psychological adaptation to hot environments--acclimatization--can improve heat tolerance. A number of measures determine the environmental contributions to heat stress. The occupational health nurse can establish priorities for addressing the work related health needs of workers in hot environments.

Management of latex reactions in the occupational setting.

1. The increased use of natural rubber latex barrier protection to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens has led to an increase in latex related health reactions, particularly associated with glove use. 2. The three types of reactions to latex in order of frequency include irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and immediate systemic/anaphylaxis reactions. 3. The management goal for all reactions is to avoid unnecessary restriction from the appropriate use of latex (gloves) which provides the best barrier protection, while protecting individual workers from exposure that

The opinion, which is grounded in the examiners professional education, experience, and judgment, becomes a legal instrument. Occupational health nurses must be cognizant of the ramifications of an IME and the communications surrounding this examination. In addition, many factors can affect the quality of an IME. Occupational health nurses should be awar
