Olives and olive products, an inevitable part of the Mediterranean diet, possess various beneficial effects, such as a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Oleuropein is a non-toxic secoiridoid found in the leaves and fruits of olive (Olea europaea L.). In this study, we have investigated the hepatoprotective activity of oleuropein in carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver injury in male BALB/cN mice. Oleuropein in doses of 100 and 200mg/kg was administered intraperitoneally (ip) once daily for 3 consecutive days, prior to CCl(4) administration (the preventive treatment),

BACKGROUND: Sepsis, driven by dysregulated host inflammation, remains a leading cause of global mortality and lacks sufficiently effective therapies. Phillyrin (PHN), a lignan glycoside from Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl (Oleaceae), exhibits anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, its molecular mechanism in sepsis remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: To delineate the molecular pathways by which PHN mitigates sepsis.
METHODS: Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, cytotoxicity assessments, and calcein acetoxymethyl

INTRODUCTION: Specific IgE (sIgE) is merely a sensitization marker that cannot be used for allergy diagnosis if there are no associated clinical symptoms. As of 2023, there is still no evidence regarding the quantity of sIgE necessary to confirm or exclude clinical disease. Therefore, this study aimed to calculate cut-offs for sIgE, allowing us to effectively diagnose olive or grass pollen allergy and select allergenic immunotherapy (AIT) candidate patients in a region under high olive and grass allergenic pressure.
METHODS: An observational retrospective study consisting of the review of ele

This study investigated the effects of nasal inhalation of Osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus (OFA) extract in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged rats. Electronic nose analysis of the OFA extracts identified 25 volatile organic compounds. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O) analysis revealed that β-ionone, linalool, and related derivatives are the primary odor-active compounds in the OFA extract. LPS exposure increased pro-inflammatory markers like tumor necrosis factor-alpha, caused organ hypertrophy in the liver, lungs, and spleen, and altered transcriptional profil

BACKGROUND: Much research effort has been focused on investigating new compounds derived from low-cost sources, such as natural products, for treating leishmaniasis. Oleuropein derived from numerous plants, particularly from the olive tree, Olea europaea L. (Oleaceae), is a biophenol with many biological activities. Our previous findings showed that oleuropein exhibits leishmanicidal effects against three Leishmania spp. in vitro, and minimizes the parasite burden in L. donovani-infected BALB/c mice. The aim of the present study is to investigate the possible mechanism(s) that mediate this lei

The Himalayan region is recognized as one of the world's major biodiversity hotspots due to its remarkable altitudinal variation, high species richness, and exceptional endemism. Despite its ecological significance, the endemic flora of the western Himalayas remains insufficiently explored at the molecular level. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of multiple nuclear and chloroplast DNA barcode loci (ITS2, rbcL, trnH-psbA, trnA, trnV, rpoB, ycf3, and rbcLa) for the identification and phylogenetic assessment of 32 endemic and threatened plant species representing 31 genera and 24 fami

BACKGROUND: Ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) is the main representative of the Oleaceae family in temperate zones. Diagnosis of ash pollen allergy is made difficult due to (1) an overlapping pollinization period with Betulaceae, (2) non-inclusion in current diagnostic assays, and (3) some cross- reactivity with minor allergens from Betulaceae. The aim of this study was to calibrate an ash pollen in-house reference preparation (IHRP) in allergic patients in order to produce standardized products for diagnosis and immunotherapy purposes.
METHODS: Ash pollen IHRP was extracted, ultrafiltered and fr
