A novel robot-assisted subretinal injection system: preliminary validation in ex vivo porcine eyes.

To evaluate the application of a novel, partially automated, robot-assisted ophthalmic surgery for subretinal injection, a study was conducted comparing manual and robot-assisted injections performed by doctors of varying experience levels on fresh, isolated porcine eyes. This system was developed by a team from Harbin Institute of Technology. The core component is a specialized microneedle with adjustable puncture angle and integrated force-sensing capability. It enables flexible intraocular manipulation during subretinal injection procedures and performs autonomous retinal puncture guided by

Posterior lamellar reconstruction: a comprehensive review of the literature.

The aim of the review is to describe the different techniques and materials available to reconstruct the tarsoconjunctival layer of the eyelid; to analyze their indications, advantages, and disadvantages. We searched the Cochrane, PubMed, and Ovid MEDLINE databases for English articles published between January 1990 and January 2017 using variations of the following key words: "posterior lamella," "eyelid reconstruction," "tarsoconjunctival," "flap," and "graft." Two reviewers checked the abstracts of the articles found to eliminate redundant or not relevant articles. The references of the ide

Botulinum toxin in ophthalmic plastic surgery.

Botulinum toxin chemodenervation has evolved greatly over the past 30 years since its introduction in the 1970s for the management of strabismus. Among ophthalmic plastic surgeons, botulinum toxins are often used as the first line treatment for facial dystonias. These toxins are also efficacious for the temporary management of various other conditions including keratopathies (through so called chemo-tarsorraphy), upper eyelid retraction, orbicularis overaction-induced lower eyelid entropion, gustatory epiphora, Frey's syndrome, and dynamic facial rhytids such as lateral canthal wrinkles (crow'

[Corneal biomechanics].

OBJECTIVE: To review the corneal biomechanic concepts and to analyse, clarify and understand their relevance in refractive surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature review has been done using different databases. RESULTS: Corneal biomechanic concepts are not new and are applied implicitly in numerous surgical procedures. Their origin is related to tonometry studies, but they gained in popularity when they were linked to the treatment of keratoconus, a pathology in which the mechanical properties of the cornea are altered. Factors determining corneal stability were thus defined. Corneal bi

Comparative effectiveness of various orbital decompression techniques in treating thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), orbital decompression is a critical surgical approach for functional and aesthetic reasons. Meanwhile, the presence of surgical complications, especially the new onset of primary gaze diplopia, also influences postoperative patient satisfaction. This research investigates the effectiveness and potential risks associated with different orbital decompression in patients with TAO. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted to identify pertinent studies from PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases. The search was completed on Oct

[Endocrine ophthalmopathy: surgical treatment].

Since the transpalpebral decompression of the orbit by removal of intraorbital fat was introduced in 1985, this technique has become the state of the art in surgical therapy for Graves' ophthalmopathy at the authors' institution. Our experience with a series of 3,210 orbital decompressions in 1,635 patients with endocrine ophthalmopathy represents the largest collective of such patients that has been published yet to our knowledge. Over time the technique has proved to be reliable, effective, safe, and easily performed by a trained and experienced oculoplastic surgeon with long-lasting results

[Oculoplastics and Orbital Surgery Section: Orbital Fractures].

Oculoplastics is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that focuses on a wide range of disorders affecting the orbit, lacrimal system, and eyelids. In this review, we examine orbital fractures with a focus on mechanisms of injury, clinical and radiologic evaluation, and surgical decision-making. We outline the common fracture patterns and their functional and aesthetic implications, discuss the criteria guiding conservative versus surgical management, and review contemporary surgical approaches along with recent technological advances in orbital reconstruction.

Acquired strabismus following cosmetic blepharoplasty.

The purpose of this study was to report on 12 patients with acquired strabismus following cosmetic blepharoplasty and to identify patterns of strabismus related to the surgical procedure. Clinical ophthalmologic examinations were performed to specifically clarify the type of strabismus. Operative reports of the blepharoplasty procedures were reviewed. Patients were followed for a minimum of 3 months after the blepharoplasty procedure before surgical intervention was considered. Operative findings at corrective strabismus surgery were noted and an attempt was made to correlate these findings wi

Assessment of indications and clinical outcome for the endoscopy-assisted combined subciliary/transantral approach in treatment of complex orbital floor fractures.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of complex orbital floor fractures with extensive orbital prolapse remains a surgical challenge in craniomaxillofacial traumatology and is still controversially discussed. Reduction of orbital tissue via a transcutaneous or transconjunctival approach alone can be very difficult and lead to unsatisfying results. METHODS: Over a 3-year-period, we enrolled 13 patients who underwent endoscopy-assisted reconstruction of isolated orbital floor fractures via a combined subciliary and transantral approach. Patient data, imaging and ophthalmologic examination were reviewed pr

[Resolution of the Federal Joint Committee on the mandatory introduction and implementation of acute pain management concepts-Importance and consequences for ophthalmology].

Patient-centered and adequate postoperative pain management is an important part of a modern treatment concept and should also be standard in ophthalmology. Due to the "Regulation on the mandatory introduction and implementation of acute pain management concepts for adequate postoperative pain therapy" prescribed by the Federal Joint Committee of the German statutory healthcare system (G-BA), hospitals and outpatient facilities have been required to have regulations on pain management in place since 9 December 2020. It is very likely that the need of pain management in ophthalmic surgery has b

Congenital anomalies of inferior rectus and its surgical outcomes.

Congenital inferior rectus hypoplasia and aplasia is a rare abnormality of the extraocular muscles, and it is the second most common after superior oblique muscle aplasia. It has been reported either in isolation or with coexisting ocular or systemic associations. We describe here cases of inferior rectus hypoplasia/aplasia, their clinical features, and surgical approach to achieve satisfactory outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed medical records from January 2009 to December 2020 of patients with vertical strabismus due to inferior rectus hypoplasia/aplasia at a tertiary eye care center. Tho

The gross examination of eyes removed for choroidal and ciliary body melanomas.

Because the traditional gross examination technique used by most ophthalmic pathologists requires cutting into the eye without directly visualizing the tumor, pathologists cannot be certain that the slides generated reflect the areas or dimensions of clinical concern. An alternate laboratory technique permits the pathologist to examine the tumor from the clinician's perspective. If the tumor is confined to the posterior pole, the anterior segment is removed first; if the tumor extends anterior to the equator, the calotte opposite the tumor apex is removed permitting direct observation of the t
