Modeling the influence of optic flow on grid cell firing in the absence of other cues1.

Information from the vestibular, sensorimotor, or visual systems can affect the firing of grid cells recorded in entorhinal cortex of rats. Optic flow provides information about the rat's linear and rotational velocity and, thus, could influence the firing pattern of grid cells. To investigate this possible link, we model parts of the rat's visual system and analyze their capability in estimating linear and rotational velocity. In our model a rat is simulated to move along trajectories recorded from rat's foraging on a circular ground platform. Thus, we preserve the intrinsic statistics of rea

High-resolution optical imaging of single magnetic flux quanta with a solid immersion lens.

Magneto-optical imaging of quantized magnetic flux tubes in superconductors - Abrikosov vortices - is based on Faraday rotation of light polarization within a magneto-optical indicator placed on top of the superconductor. Due to severe aberrations induced by the thick indicator substrate, the spatial resolution of vortices is usually well beyond the optical diffraction limit. Using a high refractive index solid immersion lens placed onto the indicator garnet substrate, we demonstrate wide field optical imaging of single flux quanta in a Niobium film with a resolution better than 600 nm and sub

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention with Stenting versus Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting in Stable Coronary Artery Disease.

A new zoom mechanism was proposed for the realization of a freeform varifocal panoramic annular lens (PAL) with a specified annular center of the field of view (FOV). The zooming effect was achieved through a rotation of the varifoal PAL around an optical axis, which is different from a conventional zooming method by moving lenses back and forth. This method solves the problem of FOV deviation from the target scope during the zooming process, since the optical axis was not taken as the zooming center of the FOV. The conical surface corresponding to a certain acceptance angle was specified as t

Correction of Non-Uniform Rotational Distortion in the Proximally Controlled Endoscopic OCTA.

Endoscopic Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) can provide high-resolution cross-sectional images for internal organ tissues. Combining the endoscopic imaging with Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA), information of blood vessels in superficial lumen tissues is expected to be acquired. However, in endoscopic OCT systems using proximal scanning probes, performance of OCTA encounters significant challenges due to non-uniform rotational distortion (NURD) caused by the non-constant rotation of the distal imaging unit. In this study, we proposed a registration method for endoscopic OCTA

Electronic current densities and origin-independent property densities induced by optical fields.

The interaction of a molecule with optical fields is customarily interpreted by means of induced time-dependent electric polarizabilities, magnetizabilities and mixed electric-magnetic polarizabilities. In general, these properties can be rationalized by integrals of density functions formulated in terms of induced charge and current densities. In this perspective, we focus on what has been done so far at the theoretical level, and on what can be expected to be unveiled from the topological study of suitable density functions, endowed with the fundamental requirement of origin invariance. Nonlinear rotation of spin-orbit coupled states in hollow ring-core fibers.

We experimentally demonstrate that when two spin-orbit coupled orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes of opposite topological charge co-propagate in the Kerr nonlinear regime in a hollow ring-core optical fiber, the vectorial mode superposition exhibits a unique power-dependent rotation effect. This effect is analogous to nonlinear polarization rotation in single-mode fibers, however, the added spatial dimension produces a visually observable rotation of the spatial pattern emerging from the fiber when imaged through a linear polarizer. A dielectric metasurface q-plate was designed and fabricate

Chiral nanoparticle separation and discrimination using radially polarized circular Airy vortex beams with orbital-induced spin angular momentum.

We report orbit-induced localized spin angular momentum associated with optical spin-orbit interactions in tightly focused radially polarized circular Airy vortex beams and demonstrate their potential for separation and discrimination of chiral nanoparticles. We find that variations in spin angular momentum density endow these beams with positive and negative annular optical chirality density. Utilizing these extraordinary distributions, particles having different chirality parameters can be separated and discriminated by using two degrees of freedom, i.e., radial trapping position and azimuth

Research on measurement technology of optical fiber angle sensor based on MEA-BP.

High-voltage disconnectors operate under strong electromagnetic radiation for long periods, making it prone to incomplete opening and closing. Current electronic sensors used to detect their status are susceptible to electromagnetic interference, leading to inaccurate measurement data. Therefore, based on the rotation characteristics of the moving contact during opening and closing, a method for measuring rotation angles in a straight line is proposed. A fiber optic angle sensor is designed according to the characteristics of reflective fiber optics to measure the rotation angle of disconnecto

How morphology affects optical trapping of red blood cells in health and disease.

Optical tweezers are widely used to manipulate microscopic particles and biological cells through optical forces and torques, yet how cell shape controls trapping response has not been fully elucidated. Here, we develop a computational framework to investigate single-beam optical trapping of red blood cells with physiologically and pathologically relevant deformed morphologies. Representative cell shapes are generated parametrically and analyzed using static displacement and rotation tests, together with Brownian dynamics simulations. We show that all considered morphologies remain laterally a

Evaluating the rotational stability of toric intraocular lenses with different haptic designs using finite element analysis.

This study was designed to measure rotational stability of four TIOLs with differences in haptic design in the capsular bag to provide insights for increasing postoperative rotational stability.Four different shapes of the TIOL models were reconstructed from real measurements and evaluated for their rotational stability in capsular bags of different diameters in vitro under simulated compression testing, as well as post-implantation analysis of rotation and stress. The TIOLs were compressed to a 10 mm diameter and assessed for bio-mechanical stability. There were significant differences in com

Optic Nerve Avulsion After Finger-Poke Injury.

We present a case of optic nerve avulsion as a result of finger-poke injury to the eye. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography demonstrated a plunging cup indicative of the avulsion, a finding not previously described. Optic nerve avulsion is a form of anterior indirect traumatic optic neuropathy evoked by a sudden severe rotation at the junction of the optic nerve and globe induced, in this case, by penetration of the finger into the nasal orbit.

Bi-Chiral Nanostructures Featuring Dynamic Optical Rotatory Dispersion for Polychromatic Light Multiplexing.

Chiral nanostructures featuring the unique optical activity have attracted broad interests from scientists. The typical polarization rotation of transmitted light is usually wavelength dependent, namely the optical rotatory dispersion. However, its dynamic tunability and intriguing collaboration with other optical degrees of freedom, especially the highly desired spatial phase, remain elusive. Herein, a bi-chiral liquid crystalline nanostructure is proposed to induce an effect called reflective optical rotatory dispersion. Thanks to the independent manipulation of opposite-handed self-assemble

Synthesis of optically active arylaziridines by regio- and stereospecific lithiation of N-bus-phenylaziridine.

Alpha,alpha-disubstituted aziridines can be produced in good yields by selective lithiation of N-tert-butylsulfonyl-2-phenylaziridine (n-BuLi/TMEDA, Et(2)O) at the benzylic position and subsequent trapping with a range of electrophiles. Repetition of the lithiation/electrophilic trapping sequence provides a stereocontrolled route to trisubstituted aziridines. Using (R)-N-tert-butylsulfonyl-2-phenylaziridine, the alpha,alpha-disubstituted aziridines can be produced as single enantiomers (er >98:2), indicating that the intermediate organolithium is configurationally stable. Efficient aziridine r

Objective quantification of the motion of soft tissues in the orbit.

Orbital soft-tissue motion analysis aids in the localization and diagnosis of orbital disorders. A technique has been developed to objectively quantify and visualize motion in the orbit during gaze. T1-weighted MR volume sequences are acquired during gaze and soft-tissue motion is quantified using optical flow techniques. The flow field is visualized using color-coding: orientation of the flow vector is coded by hue and magnitude by saturation of the pixel. Current clinical circumstances limit MR image acquisition to short sequences and short acquisition times. The effect of these limitations

Non-Destructive Structural Identification of Camouflaged Microcavity Displays via Digital Twin-Assisted Electroluminescence Analysis.

In microcavity displays, different device structures can produce nearly identical normal-incidence electroluminescence spectra, making non-destructive identification difficult. This is especially relevant when narrow-band QLED emission is compared with cavity-narrowed OLED emission. Angle-resolved measurements can distinguish these cases, but the need for mechanical rotation limits measurement throughput. Here, we developed a digital twin-assisted method that uses a single normal-incidence spectrum for structural identification. The optical model was parameterized with measured material proper
