Musculoskeletal Occupational Injuries among Orthopedic Surgeons: Risk Factors and Insights from a Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) accounts for 5-7% of all benign bone tumors. It presents in two main forms - monostotic, which is more common affecting a single bone and presenting usually in 3rd decade of life; polyostotic, affecting several bones, is less common, and is seen mainly in the 1st decade of life. These usually present as bone pain or pathological fracture. It may also be part of McCune-Albright syndrome. Since the femur is an important weight-bearing bone in the human body, most cases of FD affecting the femur present as pathological fracture more early than other sites. The

Magnetic resonance imaging for elbow pathology: overused by both orthopedic surgeons and primary care providers.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) use by both orthopedic surgeons and primary care providers (PCP) for analysis of elbow pathology is expensive and growing in frequency. In light of this, scrutiny regarding the appropriate utilization of this technology is increasing. Currently, there is no literature investigating the appropriateness of MRI use for complex elbow pathology from either orthopedic surgeons or PCPs. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on consecutive elbow MRIs performed at a tertiary care center between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2015. A total o

Transmission of hepatitis B virus from an orthopedic surgeon with a high viral load.

BACKGROUND: During the evaluation of a needle-stick injury, an orthopedic surgeon was found to be unknowingly infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) (viral load >17.9 million IU/mL). He had previously completed two 3-dose series of hepatitis B vaccine without achieving a protective level of surface antibody. We investigated whether any surgical patients had acquired HBV infection while under his care. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of all patients who underwent surgery by the surgeon was conducted. Patients were notified of their potential exposure and need for testing, and samples with

The Relationship Between Surgeon Volume and Major Surgical Complications After Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: An Evaluation of 3177 US Orthopedic Surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA), which includes anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA) and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA), is a technically demanding procedure and limited data exist on the relationship between case volume and complications. We sought to identify volume thresholds for TSA, aTSA, and rTSA at which risk of a major surgical complication decreased and to compare complications of patients treated by high-volume surgeons with those of patients treated by low-volume surgeons. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Primary, elective TSAs (aTSA and rTSA) from January 1,

Are orthopedic surgeons able to detect 3 mm and 5 mm joint step off on fluoroscopy?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether joint step-off created experimentally at 3 mm and 5 mm in the tibial lateral plateau can be accurately evaluated by orthopedic surgeons on fluoroscopic images. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A lateral tibia plateau fracture was created experimentally on above-the-knee amputated material. Using a ruler, step-off at 3 mm and then at 5 mm was made on the joint surface, then joint and lateral fluoroscopy images were obtained. These images were evaluated by 316 orthopedic surgeons. The surgeons were asked whether the joint congruence in the plateau fr

Comparison of Outcomes in Surgical Treatment of Pyogenic Flexor Tenosynovitis: Hand Surgeons Versus Other Orthopedic Subspecialists.

BACKGROUND: Call patterns among hospital systems vary. At our institution, most pyogenic flexor tenosynovitis (FTS) patients receive irrigation and debridement (I&D) from non-hand-trained orthopedic specialists on call. Our hypothesis was that there would be no outcome differences among patients managed by hand surgeons versus non-hand surgeons. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent I&D for FTS over a six-year period. Demographic data, mechanism of injury, past medical history, laboratory results indicating inflammation, time to the operating r

Justification of Body Mass Index cutoffs for hip and knee joint arthroplasty among California orthopedic surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Many orthopedic surgeons choose not to perform joint arthroplasty on patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or above, citing poorer outcomes and increased procedure risk. Identifying and addressing factors surgeons use to determine procedure BMI cutoffs are necessary to increase access to orthopaedic care for this growing patient population. This will help reduce healthcare disparities while also identifying clinical facilities, equipment, training, and procedures that require improvements to accommodate larger individuals. METHODS: Orthopaedic surgeons were surveyed to ident

Prevalence of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Orthopedic Surgeons in Saudi Arabia: A Systematic Literature Review.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WRMD) complications are common in surgeons in general, but they are much higher in orthopedic surgeons. Numerous studies have explored the prevalence of WRMD among orthopedic surgeons internationally. However, little research has been carried out in Saudi Arabia on this matter. This review aimed to investigate it. A consistent and systematic search method was carried out to establish studies reporting the prevalence of WRMD among orthopedic surgeons in Saudi Arabia. The search comprised published research from 2000 to June 2024. Nine eligible studies were

How many orthopedic surgeons does it take to write a research article? 50 years of authorship proliferation in and internationalization of the orthopedic surgery literature.

Publications are considered to indicate academic achievement and can lead to various rewards, including job opportunities and research funding. Recent years have seen a rising trend in the number of articles published, multiple authorship, and internationalization of the biomedical literature. The goal of this study was to analyze the trends in authorship over the past 50 years to determine whether the orthopedic literature parallels trends seen in other areas of the biomedical literature. We performed an observational study with analysis of the number of authors and geographic origin of artic

[Surgical Treatment of Lumbar Spine Lesions: Collaboration with Neurologists from an Orthopedic Surgeon's Perspective].

Surgical indications for lumbar spine disorders should not be determined solely based on degenerative or stenotic magnetic resonance imaging findings. This article discusses how orthopedic spine surgeons evaluate lumbar pathology in collaboration with neurologists. The central issue is whether the patient's symptoms, neurological findings, and imaging abnormalities can be used to identify the responsible lesion that is likely to improve after surgery. Differential diagnoses, including cervical or thoracic myelopathy, peripheral neuropathy, motor neuron disease, vascular claudication, hip disea

A Comparative Assessment of Surgeon Appraisal of Presurgical Infant Orthopedics Outcomes Using PLANA and NAM.

Presurgical lip, alveolus, and nose approximation (PLANA) is a novel form of presurgical infant orthopedics (PSIO) involving a prefabricated silicone intranasal device combined with hydrocolloid adhesive lip taping. Early studies have demonstrated favorable nasolabial morphologic outcomes using PLANA and a reduction in the burden of care on infants and their caregivers relative to nasoalveolar molding (NAM). However, the efficacy of PLANA in reducing cleft severity to facilitate surgical repair has not been comprehensively assessed from the perspective of the cleft surgeon. This study, therefo
