Outpatient dacryocystorhinostomy.

We report 105 dacryocystorhinostomy procedures in 87 patients performed on an outpatient basis. Seventy-six patients received local, and 29 received general, anesthesia. The patients left the hospital an average of 2.6 hours after surgery, but 14 were admitted after surgery--9 immediately, and 5 after some delay, primarily for epistaxis. There were no serious complications related to the outpatient nature of the surgery. The success rate was 94%. We conclude that outpatient dacryocystorhinostomy is successful, well accepted by patients, and safe, provided that inpatient care facilities are rea

Skin Infections and Outpatient Burn Management: Outpatient Burn Management.

Burns, whether caused by thermal, chemical, or electrical exposure, are common and often preventable. Burn injuries are most common in children. All patients with burns should undergo primary and secondary assessment, including assessment of airway, breathing, and circulation. Evaluation of the location, size, and depth of burns can help to determine the optimal setting for management. Patients with full-thickness burns, circumferential burns, or burns on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or perineum should be referred to a burn subspecialist. Minor acute pain can be managed with irrigation of

Assessing suitability for short-term cognitive-behavioral therapy in psychiatric outpatients with psychosis: a comparison with depressed and anxious outpatients.

OBJECTIVE: The Suitability for Short-Term Cognitive Therapy (SSCT) rating procedure has predicted outcome in depressed and anxious patients. This study examines its relevance in assessing patients with psychosis. METHOD: Outpatients with psychosis (n=56), depression (n=93), and anxiety (n=264) received cognitive- behavioral therapy in a university hospital teaching unit (mean number of sessions=16, SD=11). Demographic, clinical, and suitability variables were assessed as potential predictors of dropout and success as measured by the Reliable Change Index. RESULTS: Despite lower suitability s

Age-neutrality of the SCID-II: Differential Item Functioning in Younger Outpatients (Aged 20-45) and Older Outpatients (Aged 65+).

OBJECTIVES: Measurements are often developed for the assessment of personality disorders (PDs) in younger adults and seldom evaluated on the applicability in older adults. Remarkably, research has not yet been conducted into age-group appropriateness of the gold standard for the assessment of PDs, known as Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Personality Disorders (SCID-II). Therefore, the current study empirically investigated the age-neutrality of the PDs assessed by the SCID-II. METHODS: Age-neutrality was examined in 84 younger adults (aged 20-45 years) and 68 older adults (aged 65-85

Primary thromboprophylaxis in cancer outpatients - real-world evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) is a significant concern among patients with malignant diseases, leading to increased mortality. While current guidelines recommend primary thromboprophylaxis for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in medium-to-high-risk outpatients, this practice remains controversial. A better understanding of primary thromboprophylaxis is crucial, yet there is a lack of Real-World Evidence (RWE) in Portugal. AIMS: This RWE study aimed to elucidate primary thromboprophylaxis practices among cancer outpatients in Portugal. METHODS: A five-year observational multice

Temporomandibular Disorders in Psychiatric Outpatients: A Hidden Epidemic?

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a multimodal group of orofacial pain syndromes that rank behind only chronic low back pain in the list of most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions causing pain and disability. Previous studies have recorded high rates of comorbid anxiety, depression, and poor sleep quality among TMD patients. METHODS: Eighty five outpatients recruited from Rhode Island Hospital's Latino and Portuguese Mental Health Programs completed the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire

Real-World Functioning in Psychiatric Outpatients: Predictive Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Investigations on predictors of real-world functioning were mainly performed in patients with schizophrenia, while fewer studies have been conducted in other psychiatric disorders. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to identify clinical, socio-demographic, and illness-related predictors of real-world functioning during 12 months of standard treatments in outpatients with different diagnoses. METHODS: Outpatients (n = 1019) with schizophrenia (SZ), major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), and borderline personality disorder (BPD) were evaluated with the following tools:

Evaluating visual neuroplasticity with EEG in schizophrenia outpatients.

Deficient neuroplasticity has been implicated in schizophrenia and can be examined with non-invasive methods in humans. High frequency visual stimulation (HFS) induces neuroplastic changes in visual evoked potential (VEP) components, similar to the tetanizing electrical stimulation that induces synaptic long-term potentiation (LTP). While visual HFS paradigms have been used in schizophrenia, the use of a single visual stimulus has precluded demonstration of whether the plasticity effects are specific to the stimulus presented during HFS (i.e., input specific). Additionally, test-retest reliabi

Neurocognitive profile of outpatients with unipolar depressive disorders.

Introduction: It is widely accepted that major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with impairments in several cognitive domains in inpatients, but cognitive functioning has barely been systematically investigated in depressed outpatients. The aims of the present study were to examine cognitive functioning in depressed outpatients in comparison with healthy controls and to determine whether cognitive deficits vary as a function of different disorder characteristics and demographic variables. Method: We compared 103 outpatients with recurrent MDD in an acute phase of the illness with 103 he
