A Life-Saving Early Diagnosis of Burkitt Lymphoma: The Role of a Dentist.

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a subtype of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, considered one of the fastest growing human tumors. Due to the highly aggressive nature of BL, a prompt diagnosis and aggressive chemotherapeutic treatment are essential. However, the clinical features of BL often can mimic periodontal disease or dentoalveolar abscess. The aim of this study is to present a case of a 31-year-old male patient who was referred to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery for severe neurosensory disturbance and pain in the lower jaw. He was misdiagnosed with periodontitis and dental abscess at the

Current management of upper respiratory tract and head and neck infections.

The objective of this study is to present the antimicrobial management modalities of treating upper respiratory tract (URT) and head and neck infections. This article discusses the current antimicrobial treatment strategies of URT and head and neck infections. The increasing antimicrobial resistance of many bacterial pathogens has made the treatment of URT and head and neck infections more difficult. This review summarizes the aerobic and anaerobic microbiology and antimicrobials therapy of acute and chronic URT and head and neck infections. These infections include dental (gingivitis, periodo

Toxic shock syndrome secondary to a dental abscess.

A 9-year-old girl presented with arthralgia and myalgia which progressed to developing renal failure and overwhelming septic shock. The underlying cause was assumed to be a periodontal abscess from an upper right deciduous canine tooth. The pus from the abscess grew a toxic shock syndrome toxin 1-producing Staphylococcus aureus. This case illustrates the importance of an oral surgical review of patients presenting with features of toxic shock syndrome if the source of the infection is not immediately obvious.

Dental pathologies in ten free-ranging chimpanzees from Gombe National Park, Tanzania.

The dental remains of ten adult chimpanzees from Gombe National Park, Tanzania, were examined for enamel attrition, caries, abscesses, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. Age was the underlying factor in the development of dental pathology, in that enamel wear was present to some extent in all ten but was uniformly severe only in the three for whom estimated age at death was 39-43 years. In turn, enamel wear appears to have been the direct cause of abscess development, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. Periodontal disease was commonly expressed as alveolar resorption, particularly around t

Infection and periodontal diseases.

Contemporary hypotheses that consider the severe forms of periodontal disease to be infections caused by site-specific microbes fail to satisfactorily explain the epidemiologic, anthropologic, and clinical features of periodontal diseases. The microbes that have been designated as periodontopathogens are commensal bacteria present in periodontal health and disease. Association of specific bacteria with various disease forms has been established, but association is confused with causation. None of the periodontal diseases can be transmitted between individuals or between diseased and healthy si

Distribution of Porphyromonas gingivalis fimA genotypes in primary endodontic infections.

OBJECTIVE: Long fimbriae (FimA) are important virulence factors of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Based on the diversity of the fimA gene, this species is classified into 6 genotypes. This study surveyed samples from primary endodontic infections for the presence of these P. gingivalis fimA variants. STUDY DESIGN: Genomic DNA isolated from samples taken from 25 root canals of teeth with chronic apical periodontitis and 25 aspirates from acute apical abscess was used as template in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays directed toward the detection of the different P. gingivalis fimA genotypes. Prevalence of new candidate pathogens Prevotella baroniae, Prevotella multisaccharivorax and as-yet-uncultivated Bacteroidetes clone X083 in primary endodontic infections.

INTRODUCTION: Culture-independent studies have revealed a broad spectrum of oral bacterial taxa that may be associated with disease. This study investigated the prevalence of three new candidate oral pathogens: Prevotella baroniae, Prevotella multisaccharivorax, and as-yet-uncultivated Bacteroidetes oral clone X083 in primary endodontic infections using a devised culture-independent approach. METHODS: Genomic DNA was isolated from samples taken from 52 teeth with different forms of apical periodontitis and used as template in a taxon-specific 16S rRNA gene-based nested polymerase chain reacti

Anaerobic infections in the head and neck region.

Anaerobic bacteria form the predominant flora of the oral cavity, outnumbering facultative organisms by 10-1,000: 1. The type of anaerobic bacteria and their concentration depend on the anatomical site and the degree of anaerobiosis in the different sites in the mouth. Three groups of anaerobic bacteria inhabit the oral cavity; the strict anaerobes, the moderate anaerobes, and the microaerophilic group of organisms. The majority of anaerobic bacterial infections occurring in the region of the mouth, head and neck are caused by the commensal flora. These infections include dental and periodonta

Antibiotics and the intraoral abscess.

Sensitivity tests were administered to determine the effectiveness of several antibiotics in the management of the oral abscess. Cultures were taken from 13 patients who were diagnosed as having either a periodontal or periapical abscess. Results revealed the following 1. The most effective antibiotic was Chloromycetin. Yet it was felt that its medical contraindications far outweigh its use by the dental practitioner. 2. Tetracycline was the least effective antibiotic. 3. Penicillin, because of its high potency against microorganisms of the dental abscess, should be considered the drug of choi

Pyogenic liver abscess and peritonitis due to Rhizopus oryzae in a child with Papillon-Lefevre syndrome.

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome (PLS) is an autosomal recessive disease that is characterized by symmetric palmoplantar keratodermatitis and severe periodontal destruction. Mutations in the cathepsin C gene (CTSC) have recently been detected in PLS. Immune dysregulation, due to a mutation in CTSC, increases the risk of pyogenic infections in PLS patients. A child with PLS is presented here with liver abscesses and peritonitis caused by Rhizopus oryzae. His liver abscess and peritonitis were cured with amphotericin B without surgical care. This is the first case in the literature liver abscess due to

Latest Concepts in Endodontic and Periodontal Management of Diabetic Patients.

The close interrelationship between chronic oral and dental inflammatory diseases, such as periodontal and apical abscesses (AA), with the patient's systemic condition, is one of the most interesting topics of study common between dentists and the medical staff. Chronic apical periodontitis and periodontal diseases are chronic infections of the oral cavity in which similar Gram-negative anaerobic microbiota are found and in both infectious diseases increased local inflammatory mediators, levels may influence overall systemic conditions. One of the most important systemic diseases linked to per

Pulmonary actinomycosis of periodontal origin.

A case of pulmonary actinomycosis of periodontal origin is presented. Microbiologic testing including culture and typing of multiple systemic and oral lesions revealed the presence of Actinomyces naeslundii and A viscosus in all sites. In addition, biopsies demonstrating branching filamentous forms and "sulfur granules" were found in exudates from the lungs, submandibular region and left quadrants of the oral cavity. Seeding of tooth-associated materials containing Actinomyces sp into the pulmonary field may have resulted in this case of pulmonary actinomycosis. Therapy of the pulmonary and pe
