The authors examine the effects of American Sign Language (ASL) on English reading achievement and English reading comprehension. A systematic review of relevant primary research and research-integrated journal articles was conducted. Based on interpretations of a few salient articles and other sources (e.g., books) selected in a professional review, background on the ASL-English situation is provided. The authors discuss whether the findings reflect a pattern or suggest instructional implications for improving English reading comprehension. Also discussed is whether the findings are confounde

PURPOSE: This critical literature review examines how African American English (AAE) and American Sign Language (ASL)-including Black ASL-shape literacy development in Black Deaf students. It situates these linguistic systems within broader historical and contemporary contexts of literacy acquisition, highlighting systemic inequities in educational practices that marginalize nonstandard dialects and visual languages. Understanding these dynamics is essential to developing more inclusive and effective literacy instruction that honors the linguistic identities of Black Deaf learners.

In this paper, an accessible pipeline of automated teaching of the Quran to deaf and hard-of-hearing students is proposed based on the identification of Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) postures that match the words of S The piping includes an instructional method that is accessible to both deaf and hard-of-hearing students, necessitating the use of Arabic Sign Language postures to correspond to the words. A designed list of 2,054 labeled images was obtained with local institutions working with deaf users as guidance. In order to be linguistic and unambiguously semantically designated with Qur’anic

This study examines evidence-based pedagogical strategies aimed at enhancing communication competence, with a particular focus on foreign language speaking skills, among Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students at the primary education level. Acknowledging the distinct linguistic, cognitive, and communicative characteristics of DHH learners, the research addresses the central question: Which instructional techniques most effectively promote the development of speaking and broader communicative abilities in this population? Employing a qualitative research design, the study engaged 55 primary-le

This article explores perceptions about education for the Deaf community within Deaf communities in Ireland, Finland, and the UK. Ireland, Finland, and the UK all provide legal recognition of sign languages in various forms. However, it is important to understand how these laws impact Deaf people, what their experiences with the law is, and how might the law be altered to improve the lives of people it purports to serve. Interview data from Deaf people across the three countries is presented here which explores these experiences. When asked about what they might improve in the law, an overwhel

While recent studies have highlighted promising deaf-centered instructional approaches and positive writing outcomes for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students, there remains a gap in research on the validity of writing fluency assessments for DHH learners. This study examines the reliability and validity of the Correct Word Sequences (CWS) task as a measure of written fluency in DHH first and second graders, comparing it to the Woodcock-Johnson III Writing Fluency subtest (WJ-III WF). A sample of 64 children participated, and multiple linear regression models were used to assess the relation

This study used an intrinsic case study to investigate how interventions from applied behavior analysis impacted language development, academic progress, and the reduction of severe challenging behaviors for an 8-year-old child who is Deaf and autistic. 3 main themes were identified: language acquisition, behavioral change strategies, and academic performance. Additionally, 2 common threads wove in and out of each and connected all 3 themes: language access and qualified providers, including Deaf professionals. This study expands the literature about using behavioral strategies with children w

In this prospective study, various types and etiology of hearing loss among children attending public schools for the deaf were examined. One hundred students from two schools below the age of 15 years were enrolled in the study. Questionnaire was sent to all parents. Multiple modalities of investigations of hearing impairment in the children were performed. Out of the 100 students 78 (78%) had sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) which was congenital in origin while in (22%) SNHL was acquired as a result of infancy or childhood infection. Forty one cases (41%) were born as a result of consanguin

Despite the recognition that deaf children and young people's (CYP) experiences should be central to practice and policy that promotes inclusion, relatively few studies have explored deaf CYP's perspectives concerning their everyday hearing experiences. This systematic review identified and synthesized qualitative research exploring deaf CYP's experiences of hearing in everyday contexts. Searches identified 31 papers that met the inclusion criteria. Using thematic synthesis to analyze findings, four themes were identified. The experience of hearing was individualised and influenced by the soun

This is the fourth article in a series of eight that comprise a special issue on family-centered early intervention (FCEI) for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and their families, FCEI-DHH. This article describes the co-production team and the consensus review method used to direct the creation of the 10 Principles described in this special issue. Co-production is increasingly being used to produce evidence that is useful, usable, and used. A draft set of 10 Principles for FCEI-DHH and associated Tables of recommended behaviors were developed using the knowledge creation process.

BACKGROUND: Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children may experience communication delays, irrespective of early intervention and technology. Australian Sign Language (Auslan) is one approach in early intervention to address language delays. Current prevalence of Auslan use among Australian families with DHH children is unknown.
AIMS: The first aim was to determine the proportion of families enrolled in an Australian statewide hearing loss databank who use Auslan with their DHH child. The second aim was to explore the relationships between indicators of child hearing loss (bilateral or unilater

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is a common disability affecting 5% of the world's population. A lack of opportune diagnosis affects both the individual and society. In order to develop public health policies in the field of hearing health, countries must have information about epidemiology.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: In this review, we describe the information available about prevalence and incidence of hearing loss in school-aged children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Review of the literature in PubMed.
RESULTS: Reported prevalence of hearing loss in school-aged children varied between 0.2% and 7.8%. Several fac

The study investigated effects of computer-based messaging and training in communication strategies on interactions of deaf and typically hearing (TH) teammates in completing decision-making tasks without interpreter support. Fifteen teams, two deaf and two TH college students each, completed three decision-making tasks, one without messaging, one with messaging, and one with messaging and training in communication strategies. Each interaction was coded for (a) communication method, (b) to whom the interaction was directed, and (c) the function of the interaction. Without messaging, teams used

Emergencies and disasters affect all segments of the population. Some segments are more at risk during the emergency response and recovery efforts owing to vulnerabilities that increase the risk of harm. These vulnerabilities are due to individuals' disabilities, which must be incorporated into emergency and business continuity planning. Some disabilities are obvious, such as impaired vision, hearing or mobility, while other are less evident, but equally disabling, such as cognitive disorders, geographical or language isolation, and numerous age-related factors. Bryan and Emery introduced a new concept in legal jurisprudence through which a critical examination of how the law deals with deaf people can be undertaken: deaf legal theory (DLT). They define it as "how the law seeks to frame Deaf people" and argue that legal systems should be reoriented to recognise and accommodate the unique perspectives and experiences of deaf people. Current legal systems are biased in favour of hearing people and these bias disadvantage deaf people in a variety of ways, including in their access to justice, employment, and education. The aim of this article is to advan

BackgroundIt is internationally recognized that people with disabilities have an equal right to work as people without disabilities. This includes deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) people. Previous studies, primarily conducted in the US, showed discrepancies between employment outcomes of DHH people and typically hearing people.ObjectiveThere is still a lack of knowledge about the current employment status of DHH people in the Netherlands. Furthermore, additional job characteristics such as income sources and sectors of employment are yet to be examined. This paper aims to address this lack of kn

PURPOSE: Despite decades of attempts to "close the gap" between spoken language skills of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children and their hearing peers, this goal remains elusive. Retrieval practice is an empirically validated approach that could improve the acquisition and retention of language skills for DHH children. This study evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of two key features of retrieval practice (feedback and spacing) for learning and retaining novel words.
METHOD: Using a single-case adapted alternating treatments research design, the thirteen 5- to 9-year-old DHH childr
