Integrating image processing and machine learning to enhance microalgal nitrate removal via optimized CO2 holdup and pH-DO dynamics.

Efficient nitrate removal in microalgal photobioreactors requires effective control of CO₂ gas holdup, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO). This study introduces an integrated image-processing and machine-learning framework to optimize these parameters for nitrate removal using Scenedesmus sp. First, CO₂ gas–liquid hydrodynamics were evaluated in a 50-L bubble column without microalgae. Image analysis quantified gas holdup at CO₂ flow rates of 1–7 L/min and identified 5 L/min as the optimal rate, yielding a maximum holdup of 0.35 before bubble coalescence reduced retention. A dataset of 287 paired p

Effects of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Limitation on Lipid Accumulation by Chlorella kessleri str. UTEX 263 Grown in Darkness.

Growing algae in darkness for biodiesel production eliminates the challenges of evaporation and light penetration reported for open ponds and the costs and fouling that plague photobioreactors. The current study demonstrated that Chlorella kessleri str. UTEX 263 could grow heterotrophically in the dark on pure sugars or lignocellulosic hydrolysates of plant biomass. Hydrolysates of a prairie grass native to Kansas, Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), supported the growth of C. kessleri in the dark. Nitrogen limitation stimulated the accumulation of biodiesel lipids by 10-fold in heterotrophic

Biogas Purification through the use of a Microalgae-Bacterial System in Semi-Industrial High Rate Algal Ponds.

In recent years, a number of technologies have emerged to purify biogas into biomethane. This purification entails a reduction in the concentration of polluting gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide to increase the content of methane. In this study, we used a microalgal cultivation technology to treat and purify biogas produced from organic waste from the swine industry to obtain ready-to-use biomethane. For cultivation and purification, two 22.2 m3 open-pond photobioreactors coupled with an absorption-desorption column system were set up in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico. Several r

Physiological responses of floc-forming microalgae-bacteria consortia to environmental perturbations.

Fast-sedimenting microalgae-bacteria consortia (MBC) offer a cost-efficient pathway for biomass harvesting while remediating polluted water bodies in chemostatic photobioreactors. Understanding how abiotic parameters affect floc morphology, sinking properties and metagenomic species composition remains critical for optimization of these specific bioreactors. This study investigated whether fast-sedimenting MBC maintain structural resilience under moderate stress but lose stability beyond critical physiological tipping points. By investigating the physiological boundaries of five environmental

Augmenting the biodegradation of recalcitrant ethinylestradiol using Rhodopseudomonas palustris in a hybrid photo-assisted microbial fuel cell with enhanced bio-hydrogen production.

This study presents the biodegradation potential of ethinylestradiol (EE2) in anaerobic environments using exoelectrogenic activity of Rhodopseudomonas palustris. EE2, a basic ingredient in oral contraceptives, is a significant estrogenic micropollutant in various wastewaters and is considered highly recalcitrant. This recalcitrance of EE2 has caused anoxic areas to become repositories for these pollutants. Thus, it is essential to find the microorganisms and suitable methods to degrade this compound. An initial EE2 concentration of 1 mg/L, used in an anaerobic photobioreactor, resulted in 70%

Synergistic Effect of Indole-3-Acetic Acid and Homogeneously Dispersed Ulva prolifera-Derived Carbon Quantum Dots in Enhancing CO2 Fixation, Biomass Production, and Macromolecules in Chlorella vulgaris.

To address light attenuation caused by self-shading in dense microalgal cultures within photobioreactors, this study proposes a synergistic strategy employing Ulva prolifera-derived carbon quantum dots (U-CQDs) combined with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Hydrothermally synthesized U‑CQDs exhibiting fluorescence emission at 580 nm were homogeneously suspended in the culture, converting UV‑blue light into orange‑red wavelengths readily absorbed by microalgae, thereby improving light distribution uniformity. The combination of 1 mg·L-1 U-CQDs and 5 mg·L-1 IAA increased biomass production to 2.17 g·

An Indian scenario on renewable and sustainable energy sources with emphasis on algae.

India is the fifth largest primary energy consumer and fourth largest petroleum consumer after USA, China, and Japan. Despite the global economic crisis, India's economy is expected to grow at 6 to 8 %/year. There is an extreme dependence on petroleum products with considerable risks and environmental issues. Petroleum-derived transport fuels are of limited availability and contribute to global warming, making renewable biofuel as the best alternative. The focus on biogas and biomass-based energy, such as bioethanol and biohydrogen, will enhance cost-effectiveness and provide an opportunity fo

Recent advances and fundamentals of microalgae cultivation technology.

Microalgae are considered to be a promising group of organisms for fuel production, waste processing, pharmaceutical applications, and as a source of food components. Unicellular algae are worth being considered because of their capacity to produce comparatively large amounts of lipids, proteins, and vitamins while requiring little room for growth. They can also grow on waste and fix CO2 and nitrogen compounds. However, production costs limit the industrial use of microalgae to the most profitable applications including micronutrient production and fish farming. Therefore, novel microalgae bas

Internal Illumination to Overcome the Cell Density Limitation in the Scale-up of Whole-Cell Photobiocatalysis.

Cyanobacteria have the capacity to use photosynthesis to fuel their metabolism, which makes them highly promising production systems for the sustainable production of chemicals. Yet, their dependency on visible light limits the cell-density, which is a challenge for the scale-up. Here, it was shown with the example of a light-dependent biotransformation that internal illumination in a bubble column reactor equipped with wireless light emitters (WLEs) could overcome this limitation. Cells of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 expressing the gene of the ene-reductase YqjM were used fo

Heterologous Production of the Structurally Complex Diterpenoid Forskolin in Synechocystis sp. PCC. 6803.

Photosynthetic organisms such as cyanobacteria have the potential for the sustainable production of complex organic molecules due to their ability to use light as an energy source to fix CO2 and assimilate inorganic nutrients. Over the past decade, large efforts have been put into the metabolic engineering of cyanobacteria to produce various compounds such as alcohols, isoprenoids, biopolymers, and recombinant proteins. Forskolin is a structurally complex labdane-type diterpenoid with eight chiral carbon atoms and is naturally produced in the root cork of the plant Plectranthus barbatus. Forsk

Microalgae-mediated biofixation as an innovative technology for flue gases towards carbon neutrality: A comprehensive review.

Microalgae-mediated industrial flue gas biofixation has been widely discussed as a clean alternative for greenhouse gas mitigation. Through photosynthetic processes, microalgae can fix carbon dioxide (CO2) and other compounds and can also be exploited to obtain high value-added products in a circular economy. One of the major limitations of this bioprocess is the high concentrations of CO2, sulfur oxides (SOx), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in flue gases, according to the origin of the fuel, that can inhibit photosynthesis and reduce the process efficiency. To overcome these limitations, researche

Efficient removal of Imidacloprid and nutrients by algae-bacteria biofilm reactor (ABBR) in municipal wastewater: Performance, mechanisms and the importance of illumination.

Neonicotinoids, such as Imidacloprid (IMI), are frequently detected in water and wastewater, posing a threat on both the environment and the health of living things. In this work, a novel algae-bacteria biofilm reactor (ABBR) was constructed to remove IMI and conventional nutrients from municipal wastewater, aiming to explore the removal effect and advantage of ABBR. Results showed that ABBR achieved 74.9% removal of IMI under 80 μmol m-2·s-1 light, higher than photobioreactor (PBR) without biofilm (61.2%) or ABBR under 40 μmol m-2·s-1 light (48.4%) after 16 days of operation.
