Roll And Pitch of the Rider's Pelvis During Horseback Riding at Walk on a Circle.

The study investigated between-rider differences in pelvic roll and pitch motion during horseback riding as the horse walked around circles without rein contact (walk on long reins), with rein contact, and with moderate collection. Ten horses were ridden by five riders on left and right 10 m circles, in a partly crossed design, yielding 14 trials. Each trial included each of the three walk variations in both directions. Riders wore an inertial measurement unit (IMU), logging at 100 Hz, dorsally on the pelvis. Pelvic roll and pitch data were split into strides based on data from IMU-sensors on

Does exercise increase or decrease pain? Central mechanisms underlying these two phenomena.

Exercise is an integral part of the rehabilitation of patients suffering a variety of chronic musculoskeletal conditions, such as fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain and myofascial pain. Regular physical activity is recommended for treatment of chronic pain and its effectiveness has been established in clinical trials for people with a variety of pain conditions. However, exercise can also increase pain making participation in rehabilitation challenging for the person with pain. Animal models of exercise-induced pain have been developed and point to central mechanisms underlying this phenomena

Transforming retraining: Supporting racehorses to have successful second careers.

Optimizing long-term welfare outcomes for Thoroughbred racehorses following retirement from racing is a priority across the global horse racing industry. Following their racing career, horses are required to adapt to a markedly different lifestyle, involving substantial physical, behavioural, and mental adjustment. This study consulted experienced retrainers to identify factors that inform successful retraining and transition of former racehorses to promote positive lifelong outcomes beyond racing. An online survey of 100 global stakeholders experienced in retraining former racehorses explored

Dissecting the molecular landscape of exercise-mediated protection against fructose-induced cardiac dysfunction: Evidence from animal models.

Excessive fructose consumption, mainly driven by industrial sweeteners, combined with increasingly sedentary lifestyles, has contributed substantially to the global rise in cardiometabolic diseases. Although the evolutionary balance between fructose intake and energy expenditure has been disrupted, it may be restored through targeted lifestyle interventions. This review examines the cardioprotective potential of physical exercise in the context of high fructose intake. Owing to the limited number of human studies, we analyzed 30 animal studies identified in PubMed, focusing on underlying cellu

Cardiac Vagus and Exercise.

Lower resting heart rate and high autonomic vagal activity are strongly associated with superior exercise capacity, maintenance of which is essential for general well-being and healthy aging. Recent evidence obtained in experimental studies using the latest advances in molecular neuroscience, combined with human exercise physiology, physiological modeling, and genomic data suggest that the strength of cardiac vagal activity causally determines our ability to exercise.

The horse-saddle-rider interaction.

Common causes of poor performance in horses include factors related to the horse, the rider and/or the saddle, and their interrelationships remain challenging to determine. Horse-related factors (such as thoracolumbar region pain and/or lameness), rider-related factors (such as crookedness, inability to ride in rhythm with the horse, inability to work the horse in a correct frame to improve core strength and muscular support of the thoracolumbar spine of the horse), and saddle-related factors (such as poor fit causing focal areas of increased pressure) may all contribute to poor performance to

Comparative effects of French Contrast Method vs. Complex Training on explosive power and its endurance in youth badminton athletes.

Badminton players normally prioritize technical and tactical training over physical conditioning before competition, presenting a challenge in enhancing physical fitness within a constrained timeframe. While evidence have indicated complex contrast training can enhance strength and power, it is still unclear whether the French Contrast Method Training (FCMT) can bring greater explosive power gains to young badminton players. This study evaluated the effects of French Contrast Method Training versus Complex Training on lower limb explosive strength and its endurance in elite adolescent male bad

Locomotor and Physiological Demands of Small-Sided Soccer Games in Wildcard and Regular Players: Effects of Goalkeepers and Type of Wildcard.

BACKGROUND: Small-sided games (SSGs) are frequent training drills in soccer. This study investigated whether type of game (ie, with/without goalkeepers) and wildcard ( without vs internal vs external wildcard) impact the physiological (heartrate [HR]) and locomotor (total distance [TD] covered) demands in regular and wildcard players and to evaluate between-player and within-player variability. HYPOTHESIS: Demands are influenced by wildcard and game type, with higher demand (distance covered at high intensities and sprint speed) in regular players and with higher variability in SSG with wildc

Validation of End-of-Session D' Balance for Quantifying and Differentiating Exhaustive and Nonexhaustive Intermittent-Training Sessions in Runners.

PURPOSE: Accurate modeling of intermittent-running sessions by D' balance would aid in understanding their physical demand and subsequent prescription of intermittent sessions. In intermittent cycling, W' balance can be validly quantified by modeling W' depletion and recovery; however, these models have not been validated in intermittent running, which was this project's purpose. METHODS: Critical speed (in meters per second) and D' (in meters) were calculated from the linear relationship between speed (in meters per second) and 1/time from season-best performances over 1500-, 3000-, and 5000

Effect of Heat Acclimatization, Heat Acclimation, and Intermittent Heat Training on Maximal Oxygen Uptake.

BACKGROUND: Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is an important determinant of endurance performance. Heat acclimation/acclimatization (HA/HAz) elicits improvements in endurance performance. Upon heat exposure reduction, intermittent heat training (IHT) may alleviate HA/HAz adaptation decay; however, corresponding VO2max responses are unknown. HYPOTHESIS: VO2max is maintained after HAz/HA; IHT mitigates decrements in aerobic power after HAz/HA. STUDY DESIGN: Interventional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3.
