The antitrypanosomal activity of 101 crude ethanol extracts derived from 88 medicinal plants from Côte d'Ivoire was determined in vitro using Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. Of those extracts 8 showed good activity (IC50 values < or =8 microg/ml), 37 revealed a weak activity (IC50 values between 25 and 8.1 microg/ml) and 56 did not show any activity at all (IC50 values >25 microg/ml). The extracts of Enantia polycarpa (Annonaceae) and Trichilia emetica (Meliaceae) were the most promising ones. Their IC50 values were 0.5 and 0.04 microg/ml, respectively, and the selectivity index 616 and 209, r

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global public health crisis that is being exacerbated by widespread misuse of antibiotics and rapid bacterial adaptation. The progressive decrease in antibiotic efficacy is also compounded by a stagnating drug-discovery pipeline and underscores the urgent need for innovative and sustainable antimicrobial strategies. This review systematically delineates the core molecular mechanisms driving bacterial resistance, including enzymatic drug inactivation, target modification, reduced membrane permeability, and multidrug efflux pump overexpression. All therapeutic interventions aimed at modulating the immune response to pathogens, self-antigens, carcinogens, or xenogeneic antigens are referred to as immunomodulation, which either prevents hyperactivation or restores the appropriate response of the immune system. Since antiquity, medicinal plants have been used as a source of immune-boosting medicines with fewer side effects. These medicinal plants, for example, Curcuma longa, Camellia sinensis, Artemisia annua, and Andrographis paniculata, have been used to treat immune system disorders such as multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, lupus, and o

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis species (sp.) are enteric parasites that live in both humans' and animals' gastrointestinal tracts. Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) is the recognizable human isolates in clinical and diagnostic specimens. Human infection occurs via the oro-fecal route, particularly in developing areas due to the lack of sanitation and hygienic facilities. B. hominis can exist in the large intestine for weeks to years until treated appropriately. Metronidazole is the drug of choice for the treatment of Blastocystis infection. However, it induces intolerable side effects and has been s

Chronic joint inflammatory disorders like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, which are manifested by joint dysfunction, show an upsurge in inflammation and oxidative stress. Although conventional anti-arthritic drugs are being used to relieve pain from arthritic symptoms, they usually cause severe side effects. Traditionally used Ayurvedic medicinal plants are a promising alternative for the management of arthritic symptoms, as they are safe and effective. Ayurvedic medicinal plants improve arthritic symptoms by reducing joint tenderness, joint pain, swelling, bone and cartilage damage,

Plants have had historical significance in medicine since the beginning of civilization. The oldest medical pharmacopeias of the African, Arabian, and Asian countries solely utilize plants and herbs to treat pain, oral diseases, skin diseases, microbial infections, multiple types of cancers, reproductive disorders among a myriad of other ailments. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 65% of the world population solely utilize botanical preparations as medicine. Due to the abundance of plants, plant-derived medicines are more readily accessible, affordable, convenient, and ha

The popularity of natural medicine is growing worldwide. Unlike conventional licensed medicines, herbal medicine practices are usually not supported by effectiveness, efficacy, or safety studies, which raise concerns about potential risks involved in their usage, particularly in high-risk patients such as pregnant women where teratogenicity is a concern. Despite a lack of science-based evidence, the use of herbal products for the management of pregnancy-associated challenges is common, due to the common notion that they are free of toxic effects and adverse reactions because they are "natural.
