We report a case of severe citrate toxicity during volunteer donor apheresis platelet collection. The donor was a 40-year-old female, first-time apheresis platelet donor. Past medical history was remarkable for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and depression. Reported medications included bumetanide, pravastatin, and paroxetine. A case of severe headache in a young woman is described. The headache was not associated with additional neurological findings. In peripheral blood extremely high count of platelets was found. Additional examinations supported the diagnosis of essential thrombocythemia (ET). As a first line treatment thrombocytapheresis was performed. Reactive thrombocytosis occurs in response to infection, trauma, or surgery. Splenectomy alone accounts for 19% of all possible causes of extreme thrombocytosis. We performed thrombocytapheresis in a young lady with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) who developed postsplenectomy reactive thrombocytosis. BACKGROUND: A variety of screening methods are currently used worldwide in order to decrease the risk of transfusion-transmitted sepsis and improve the safety of PCs.
METHODS/MATERIALS: PCs inoculated with five different transfusion-relevant species of bacteria at concentrations of 1, 10, and 100 colony-forming units (CFU)ml(-1) were stored at 22°C for 7 days. BACKGROUND: Bacterial contamination of apheresis platelets (AP) remains a significant challenge in transfusion medicine, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This study evaluates the efficacy of bacterial screening using a negative-to-date (NTD) protocol and investigates the incidence of septic transfusion reactions.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted over three years at a tertiary care blood center. A total of 1408 AP donations were screened using the BacT/ALERT 3D culture system. Transfusion timelines, culture results, and transfusion reactions were analyzed.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-issue tests, such as the Verax Pan Genera Detection (PGD) test, can be used to mitigate the occurrence of septic reactions. Little is known about how widespread the adoption of the PGD test is across US hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Platelet inventory constraints necessitate ABO-incompatible platelet transfusion. Many minimize the hemolytic impact by confirming low titre (LT) donor isohemagglutinins. This process is costly. Pathogen-reduced platelets (PRP) in platelet additive solutions (PAS) will dilute plasma and decrease high-titre isohemagglutinins (HT).
