Of Lyme disease and machine learning in a One Health world.

OBJECTIVE: Lyme disease is a vector-borne emerging zoonosis in Ontario driven by human population growth and climate change. Lyme disease is also a prime example of the One Health concept. While little can be done to immediately reverse climate change and population growth, public health must resort to health communication as its best option for disease control until an effective vaccine becomes available. Disease surveillance enabling precision public health has an important role in this respect: one of the goals of disease surveillance is to forecast the future burden of disease to inform th

Dengue transmission dynamics prediction by combining metapopulation networks and Kalman filter algorithm.

Predicting the specific magnitude and the temporal peak of the epidemic of individual local outbreaks is critical for infectious disease control. Previous studies have indicated that significant differences in spatial transmission and epidemic magnitude of dengue were influenced by multiple factors, such as mosquito population density, climatic conditions, and population movement patterns. However, there is a lack of studies that combine the above factors to explain their complex nonlinear relationships in dengue transmission and generate accurate predictions. Therefore, to study the complex s

A sustainable future for humanity? How can psychology help?

The sustainability of human life on Earth in the future is in danger. Human actions are producing many harmful and possibly irreversible changes to the environmental conditions that support life on Earth. This article summarizes major threats to Earth's environment, including global warming, ozone layer destruction, exhaustion of fisheries and agricultural land, and widespread exposure to toxic chemicals. Unless they are overcome, these changes will make human life increasingly miserable and eventually may make Earth nearly uninhabitable for future generations. These threats are caused by patt

A dual-branch deep learning framework for tiered early warning of COVID-19 utilizing wastewater data.

BACKGROUND: Wastewater offers earlier, population-level signals, yet few models integrate environmental drivers for reliable routine COVID-19 alerts. We hypothesized that combining wastewater and environmental covariates in a dual-branch deep model leveraging FFT would improve forecasting and alerting. METHODS: Using weekly wastewater, meteorological, and case data from Changzhou, China (Jan 29-Dec 10, 2024), we developed a framework that forecasts case trajectories and triggers tiered yellow/red alerts at predefined thresholds. RESULTS: On 2-week-ahead internal tests, performance was: RMSE

Edentulism in China and the Group of Twenty (G20): Epidemiological Trends, Decomposition Analysis, and Forecasts to 2038.

AIMS: Edentulism is a severe global oral health burden, particularly in aging societies. While previous studies have documented epidemiological trends, a direct comparison of the drivers and future trajectories between a rapidly aging economy like China and the broader Group of Twenty (G20) nations are lacking. This study aimed to compare temporal trends, decompose contributing factors, and forecast the future burden of edentulism in China versus the G20 aggregate from 1990 to 2038. METHODS: Using Global Burden of Disease 2023 data, we analysed age-standardised incidence rates (ASIR) and disa

Updating reference values and predictive models of the OCRA method in the risk assessment of work-related musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs.

A database has been established combining existing data for 23 groups of workers with different level of exposure to repetitive movements of the upper limbs. For all groups, data were available regarding an exposure index (OCcupational Repetitive Actions - OCRA index) and clinically determined UL-WMSDs outcomes (PA = Prevalence of workers affected by one or more UL-WMSDs; PC = Prevalence of single diagnosed cases of an UL-WMSDs). Using these data, new critical values of the OCRA index have been estimated for discriminating different exposure levels (green, yellow, red areas) and new forecastin

Population pharmacokinetics of piperacillin based on multicenter data to support model-informed precision dosing in critically ill women.

Sex-specific differences in pharmacokinetics are increasingly recognized as clinically relevant, yet most population pharmacokinetic models for antibiotics have been developed in predominantly male populations with limited transferability to female patients. This study aimed to develop and externally evaluate a population pharmacokinetic model of piperacillin specifically for critically ill women to support model-informed precision dosing (MIPD). A total of 923 samples from 165 critically ill women (from four previously published studies) receiving piperacillin/tazobactam were analyzed. The da

The use of time-series analysis to forecast bont tick (Amblyomma hebraeum) infestations in Zimbabwe.

Studying the dynamics of tick infestations on cattle is an essential step in developing optimal strategies for tick control. Successful strategic tick control requires accurate predictions of when tick infestations will reach predetermined threshold levels. In the case of Amblyomma hebraeum, earlier work has shown that there is no consistent pattern of seasonal activity. This means that a statistical model for predicting A. hebraeum infestations cannot reliably use climatic factors as the only independent variables. An alternative method is to apply time-series, or auto-regressive moving-avera
