Controlled-release permanganate (CRP) is a relatively new technology used to treat contaminated groundwater. This study tested the encapsulation of permanganate using stearic acid to realize controlled-release properties. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of manganese oxides (MnO2) in the reaction between CRP and the contaminant of interest: tetrachloroethylene (PCE). We report a case of intracerebral hemorrhages due to sporadic cerebral amyloid angiopathy in a 43-year-old male with a luxuriant giant cell reaction. The amyloid was resistant to potassium permanganate-sulfuric acid oxidation and reacted with an antiserum to synthetic beta-protein. The distribution and histologic characteristics of the multinucleated giant cell reaction suggest that it represents a foreign-body reaction rather than giant cell arteritis.

We observed the development of generalized amyloidosis in a girl with glycogen storage disease type Ib (GSD-Ib) who showed neutropenia, neutrophil dysfunction and recurrent infections. Renal and thyroid biopsies showed secondary amyloidosis, characterized by the presence of potassium permanganate sensitive Dylon positive deposits in glomeruli, renal vessels and thyroid interstitium. Immunohistochemistry showed that the deposits were composed of amyloid A (AA) protein. Possibly neutrophil abnormalities are involved in the pathogenesis of amyloidosis.

The virus of Creutzfeldt Jakob disease differs from conventional viruses in its extraordinary resistance to commonly used physical and chemical methods of decontamination. Autoclaving the virus for 1 hour at 121 degrees C and 2 atmospheres pressure is the most certain means for achieving total inactivation. Exposure to 5 p. 100 hypochlorite for several hours can also totally inactivate the virus, and exposure to phenol or potassium permanganate is probably effective, but as yet insufficiently tested.
