Does improved risk information increase the value of cholera prevention? An analysis of stated vaccine demand in slum areas of urban Bangladesh.

As the world's longest running pandemic, cholera poses a substantial public health burden in Bangladesh, where human vulnerability intersects with climatic variability. Barriers to safe water and sanitation place the health of millions of Bangladeshis in jeopardy - especially those who have highly constrained choices in preventing and responding to cholera. In this paper we investigate demand for cholera prevention among residents in the Mirpur and Karail slum areas of urban Dhaka. Using survey data from 2023 households in two slum areas, we analyze responses from a contingent valuation questi

[Prophylactic representations, discourses and practices during the cholera epidemic (1886-1887, Mendoza, Argentina)].

The article takes a look into the disciplinary projects approved by the authorities in the province of Mendoza (Argentina) during the cholera epidemic that took place during the summer of 1886-1887. Although the projects were intended to ameliorate the sanitary conditions of the whole of the population, these were focused and applied more intensively on the underprivileged sectors and their areas of inhabitance. This follows the ideas and representations created by the State regarding the illness and its death during this period.

Zoonotic and Vector-Borne Diseases in Urban Slums: Opportunities for Intervention.

Urban slums provide conditions that increase the risk of exposure to vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens. Large interventions, such as social and sanitary changes, are a priority but their implementation is challenging. Integration between the multidisciplinary understanding of pathogens' dynamics and community participatory approaches is a key prevention strategy.

[Analysis on maternal mortality in China, 2000 - 2005].

OBJECTIVE: To analyzes the characteristics, the trend and the leading causes of maternal deaths in China between 2000 and 2005. METHODS: Data under analysis were those from a population-based epidemiological survey conducted by the national maternal mortality surveillance network which covered a total population of about 80 000 000 in China. RESULTS: Maternal mortality ratio (MMR) was both higher in the countryside than that in the city and in the remote area than that in the inland and in the coastal region. From 2000 to 2005, the overall MMR in China dropped from 53.0/100 000 livebirths to

Leprosy detection through non-survey techniques.

Most practical and cheap techniques other than mass surveys to detect leprosy in urban slums are still not known. The population inhabiting a large somewhat isolated slum in North Bombay was exposed to intensive health education programmes over a period of two years. Leprosy cases reporting as a result of these measures as well as those detected by trained workers casually or through contact examination were registered at two weekly clinics conducted within the slum. A total of 184 patients out of whom 27 were smear +ve, were identifiable by these means. The population of the slum was found to

Opioid Overdose Deaths in the City and County of San Francisco: Prevalence, Distribution, and Disparities.

Drug overdose is now the leading cause of unintentional death nationwide, driven by increased prescription opioid overdoses. To better understand urban opioid overdose deaths, this paper examines geographic, demographic, and clinical differences between heroin-related decedents and prescription opioid decedents in San Francisco from 2010 to 2012. During this time period, 331 individuals died from accidental overdose caused by opioids (310 involving prescription opioids and 31 involving heroin). Deaths most commonly involved methadone (45.9%), morphine (26.9%), and oxycodone (21.8%). Most death

The ecology of Chagas disease in Chile.

Chagas disease probably affects over half a million people in Chile, principally in rural communities in the fertile valleys of the arid 'norte chico' region, north of Santiago. The main domestic vector is Triatoma infestans, but Triatoma spinolai, although mainly in rocky sylvatic and peridomestic ecotopes, also invades houses. Since the Spanish invasion in the sixteenth century, and particularly during the last 100 years, the endemic region has suffered an ecological breakdown, largely due to excessive timbering and over-grazing, which has led to a denuded landscape with severe loss of agric

Machine learning study using 2020 SDHS data to determine poverty determinants in Somalia.

Extensive research has been conducted on poverty in developing countries using conventional regression analysis, which has limited prediction capability. This study aims to address this gap by applying advanced machine learning (ML) methods to predict poverty in Somalia. Utilizing data from the first-ever 2020 Somalia Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS), a cross-sectional study design is considered. ML methods, including random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), support vector machine (SVM), and logistic regression, are tested and applied using R software version 4.1.2, while conventional metho

Neighborhood Factors as Correlates of Alcohol Use in the N2 Cohort Study of Black Sexual Minority Men and Transgender Women.

Sexually minoritized men (SMM), transgender women (TW), and particularly Black SMM and Black TW may be disproportionately impacted by alcohol-related problems. Few studies have empirically examined neighborhood factors that may contribute to alcohol use, specifically among these populations. Using data from the N2 longitudinal cohort study in Chicago, IL, survey data from the second wave of longitudinal assessment (n = 126), and GPS mobility data collected during study enrollment were used to evaluate neighborhood alcohol outlet availability, neighborhood disorder, and neighborhood poverty as

Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities in Long-Term Outcomes in ≥1 Year Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Survivors: A CIBMTR Analysis.

Racial/ethnic minorities have demonstrated worse survival after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) compared to whites. Whether the racial disparity in HCT outcomes persists in long-term survivors and possibly may be even exacerbated in this population, which frequently transitions back from the transplant center to their local healthcare providers, is unknown. In the current study, we compared long-term outcomes among 1-year allogeneic HCT survivors by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES). The Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research database was

Impoverishment Effect of Hydatid Disease and Precision Medical Assistance Pattern of Government: Evidence from Yushu in China.

Hydatid disease is one of the 17 neglected tropical diseases recognized by WHO and causes a huge global disease burden. Hydatid disease poses a great threat to local medical poverty alleviation. In efforts to break the vicious circle of poverty, Hydatid disease has been widely concerned and discussed. In the practice of poverty alleviation in China, medical poverty alleviation is regarded as the double goal of getting rid of poverty and promoting the construction of a healthy China. On the basis of on-the-spot investigation in Yushu Prefecture, this paper conducts a follow up study on the pove

Equity in the Distribution of Regulatory PM2.5 Monitors.

Unequal exposure to air pollution by race and socioeconomic status is well-documented in the U.S. However, relatively little research has examined inequities in the collection of PM2.5 data, creating a critical gap in understanding which neighborhood exposures are represented in these data sets. In this study, we use multilevel models with random intercepts by county and state, stratified by urbanicity, to assess associations between six key environmental justice (EJ) attributes (%AIAN, %Asian, %Black, %Hispanic, %White, %Poverty) at the census tract level and proximity to the nearest regulato

Does opportunity co-creation help the poor entrepreneurs? Evidence from China.

Extreme poverty can be alleviated through entrepreneurship, but starting a business can be elusive among impoverished people, partly due to a lack of access to entrepreneurial opportunities. In the current literature, the source of entrepreneurial opportunity for the poor remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we used the opportunity co-creation perspective to examine the impact of opportunity co-creation on the entrepreneurial performance of the poor and its various influence pathways. We developed a chain multiple mediation model and surveyed 330 poor entrepreneurs from the Wuling M

Neighborhood Poverty and Sex Differences in Live Donor Kidney Transplant Outcomes in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood poverty has been associated with worse outcomes after live donor kidney transplantation (LDKT), and prior work suggests that women with kidney disease may be more susceptible to the negative influence of poverty than men. As such, our goal was to examine whether poverty differentially affects women in influencing LDKT outcomes. METHODS: Using data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients and US Census, we performed multivariable Cox regression to compare outcomes among 18 955 women and 30 887 men who received a first LDKT in 2005-2014 with follow-up throu

Preventable Hospitalization Rates and Neighborhood Poverty among New York City Residents, 2008-2013.

Knowing which demographic groups have higher rates of preventable hospitalizations can help identify geographic areas where improvements in primary care access and quality can be made. This study assessed whether preventable hospitalization rates by neighborhood poverty decreased from 2008 to 2013 and whether the gap between very high and low poverty neighborhoods changed. We examined trends in age-adjusted preventable hospitalization rates and rate ratios by neighborhood poverty overall and by sex using JoinPoint regression. Prevention Quality Indicators (PQIs) developed by the Agency for Hea

Incentivizing Tobacco Helpline Engagement in Persistent Poverty Counties: A Randomized Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent poverty counties (PPCs) are U.S. counties where ≥20% of residents have lived in poverty for ≥30 years. Cancer mortality rates in PPCs are exceptionally high due, in part, to elevated smoking rates. STUDY DESIGN: The study used a parallel 2-group randomized controlled trial design. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Participants were Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline (OTH) callers from PPCs who smoked daily (N=165). Data were collected in 2022-2023. INTERVENTION: Participants were randomized to received OTH treatment (coaching calls plus nicotine replacement therapy [NRT]) or OTH treatme

Could tungiasis jump to Asia? Modelling habitat suitability and establishment risk for the tungiasis flea (Tunga penetrans) in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by the jigger flea (Tunga penetrans) which typically invades the sole of the foot causing serious morbidity and sometimes mortality through secondary infections such as tetanus. Although tungiasis is found throughout tropical regions of the Americas and Africa, it has not yet become established in tropical Asia. Due to the large human population and extensive poverty in tropical Asia, an introduction of T. penetrans would pose a serious public health threat. Therefore, to estimate the extent of suitable habitat in tropical Asia and to iden

Interactive effects of individual and neighborhood race and ethnicity on rates of high-grade cervical lesions.

We estimated the main and interactive effects of individual race/ethnicity (black, Hispanic, white) and area race, ethnicity, and poverty (proportions of the female population black, Hispanic, and living below the federal poverty level at the census tract level, respectively) on rates of high-grade cervical lesions among young women. Using data from a statewide surveillance system during 2008-2011, we found a marginally significant interaction (P<0.05) between individual race/ethnicity and area race, with black and Hispanic women living in areas with ≥20% of the female population black having

A comparative analysis of primary school meal nutrition across the low- and high-poverty boroughs of Inner London.

BACKGROUND: Socio-economic status is a known predictor of childhood obesity. Improvements to school meals have been promoted as a method of combating rising childhood obesity rates, especially in low-income populations. However, little is known about how school food offerings differ across areas of low and high socio-economic status. This study aims to examine differences in school lunch nutrition across socioeconomic strata and compare these differences to small-scale regional childhood obesity prevalence. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of electronically published school lunch menu
