A Review of Nonsurgical Neurolytic Procedures for Neuropathic Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Ideally, a physical or chemical nonsurgical neurolytic procedure provides targeted neurolysis to relieve pain for a suitable length of time without causing complications. This narrative review focuses on five nonsurgical neurolytic procedures that are well-established and well-documented in the literature for the treatment of refractory neuropathic pain and peripheral neuropathies, in particular: two physical nonsurgical neurolytic techniques (cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation) and three chemoneurolytic agents (alcohol injection, phenol injection, and a high-concentration

Neurological pain relief interventional radiology procedures.

Neurological interventions have taken on a significant role in interventional radiology (IR) practice. Indications fall under three main categories: (1) intraprocedural pain management, (2) cancer pain palliation, and (3) chronic non-cancer pain control. Short-term regional anaesthesia can be achieved with local anaesthetics, while longer-term pain control can be attained with radiofrequency neuromodulation (pulsed or otherwise) or thermal/chemical neurolysis. This review article summarises the therapeutic options, applications, and techniques of commonly used peripheral nerve and plexus inter

[Procedure Specific Pain Therapy - the PROSPECT Idea].

Acute pain therapy following operative or interventional procedures has become a compulsory component of a modern perioperative patient management. A structured pain regimen has several clear advantages: it leads to an improvement of the patients' quality of life in the short term, it reduces perioperative morbidity in the medium term, it reduces pain chronification in the long term, at the same time improving the economic efficiency due to an accelerated mobilization, a reduction of the hospitalization and an avoidance of complication inherent costs. This article provides detailed information

Caregivers' perceptions, knowledge, and perceived barriers to pediatric procedural pain management: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Pain from medical procedures can have negative effects on children and adolescents (eg, healthcare avoidance), and is often not adequately prevented and treated. Best practices emphasize the important role of caregivers in procedural pain management. OBJECTIVES: To investigate caregivers' perceptions, knowledge, and behaviours related to their children's procedural pain management and to describe the barriers perceived by caregivers encountered during the management of their child's procedural pain. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional online survey of caregivers with children a

Added value of pre-procedural magnetic resonance angiography in transarterial embolization for refractory musculoskeletal pain.

BACKGROUND: Transarterial microembolization (TAME) is a minimally invasive treatment for chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Identifying angiogenesis and the supplying vessels of the target joint is important but challenging. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used to diagnose musculoskeletal diseases, it typically excludes vascular imaging. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (DCE-MRA) has the ability to visualize lesion angiogenesis, identify supplying vessels, and evaluate the vasculature anatomy. We propose that incorporating DCE-MRA into pre-procedur

Methoxyflurane for Relief of Procedural Pain in Burn Patients: A Prospective Single-Centre Evaluation Study.

Background: Procedural pain in burn patients continues to be a major problem. Frequently used analgesics, such as opioids, may have various side effects, including respiratory depression, nausea, and vomiting. Inhaled methoxyflurane has been used in the pre-hospital setting for trauma-related pain. This pilot study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using methoxyflurane for pain relief during dressings changes for burns in the hospital setting. Methods: In this investigator-initiated pilot study, we included burn patients undergoing dressing changes in the burn ward. The primary outcome w

Therapeutic touch is not therapeutic for procedural pain in very preterm neonates: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Preterm neonates below 30 weeks' gestational age undergo numerous painful procedures. Many management approaches are not appropriate for this population. Therapeutic Touch, an alternative approach based on the theory of energy medicine, has been shown to promote physiological stability in preterm neonates and reduce pain in some adult studies. The objective was to determine whether Therapeutic Touch is efficacious in decreasing pain in preterm neonates. METHODS: Infants < 30 weeks' gestational age participated in a randomized control trial in 2 level III neonatal intensive care un

Hypnosis for unplanned procedural pain in the intensive care unit: the HYPIC randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Pain and anxiety are frequent among critically ill patients undergoing unplanned invasive procedures, and pharmacological pain relief is not always possible. Although hypnosis is widely used in planned painful procedures, studies are lacking in this specific setting. Thus, we aimed to assess whether hypnosis plus standard care reduced pain and anxiety in critically ill patients undergoing an unplanned invasive procedure in comparison to standard care. METHODS: The HYPIC trial was a randomized, single-blind, multicenter clinical trial of hypnosis during unplanned invasive procedure

Optimizing burn wound procedural pain control, efficiency, and satisfaction through integrated nurse and physician education.

Herein, we report the results of a quality improvement project (QI). Following a review of the burn unit practices, a nursing-led, physician supported educational intervention regarding optimal timing, dosage, and indication for medications used during hydrotherapy, including midazolam and opioids, was implemented. We hypothesized that such intervention would support improvement in both nurse and patient satisfaction with pain control management. Patients undergoing hydrotherapy were surveyed. Demographics, opioid dose prescribed (oral morphine equivalents), midazolam use, timing of administra
