The role of speed of processing, rapid naming, and phonological awareness in reading achievement.

This study investigated the role of speed of processing, rapid naming, and phonological awareness in reading achievement. Measures of response time in motor, visual, lexical, grammatical, and phonological tasks were administered to 279 children in third grade. Measures of rapid object naming, phonological awareness, and reading achievement were given in second and fourth grades. Reading group comparisons indicated that poor readers were proportionally slower than good readers across response time measures and on the rapid object naming task. These results suggest that some poor readers have a

Inflectional morphology in high-functioning autism: Evidence for speeded grammatical processing.

Autism is characterized by language and communication deficits. We investigated grammatical and lexical processes in high-functioning autism by contrasting the production of regular and irregular past-tense forms. Boys with autism and typically-developing control boys did not differ in accuracy or error rates. However, boys with autism were significantly faster than controls at producing rule-governed past-tenses (slip-slipped, plim-plimmed, bring-bringed), though not lexically-dependent past-tenses (bring-brought, squeeze-squeezed, splim-splam). This pattern mirrors previous findings from Tou

Naming speed deficits in reading disability: multiple measures of a singular process.

Speed of word identification is important in the theories of reading proposed by La Berge and Samuels (1974) and Perfetti (1985), and is substantially correlated with reading skill. However, there is controversy about whether disabled readers have a speed deficit that is restricted to the identification of printed words, or if instead, they have a more general speed deficit in retrieving names of even single digits. To investigate this issue, poor and average readers (N = 43) in grade 2 were assessed on several indices of speed of digit and letter naming, using both continuous-list and discret

Production of Recombinant African Swine Fever Viruses: Speeding Up the Process.

African swine fever (ASF) is a devastating disease in pigs, with no vaccines for control. The genetic manipulation of African swine fever virus (ASFV) is often tedious and time consuming. Here, we describe a method to manipulate the virus genome to produce gene deletion viruses in a much-reduced time. This method combines the conventional homologous recombination with fluorescent-activated cells sorting (FACS), to isolate and purify viruses expressing fluorescent reporter genes. With three rounds of single cell isolation via FACS and two rounds of limiting dilution, we deleted two additional g

Direct access surgery for cholecystectomy - can we speed up the process?

BACKGROUND: In appropriate patients, direct referral from general practitioners to surgery without pre-operative clinic assessment can streamlining the process and allow more efficient use of clinical time. This study aimed to look at the feasibility of a direct access cholecystectomy pathway in patients with symptomatic gallstones and their satisfaction of it. METHODS: In 2012, Bay of Plenty general practitioners (GP) were invited to refer fit patients (ASA 1 or 2, BMI <35 and <60 years old) with symptomatic cholelithiasis directly to a surgical list. One surgeon oversaw each referral and th

Thalamic and functional correlates of processing speed in pediatric epilepsy syndromes: an exploratory neuroimaging study.

PURPOSE: Children with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS) and childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) often have favorable seizure outcomes, but cognitive inefficiencies may persist and affect school functioning. Whether choice reaction time (CRT) is related to somatomotor connectivity and thalamic or hippocampal volumes in these syndromes remains unclear. METHODS: We performed an exploratory secondary analysis of public pediatric epilepsy neuroimaging data. After excluding one participant with SeLECTS because of FreeSurfer segmentation failure, the final structural and funct

The impact of Information processing speed on visuospatial memory encoding and retrieval in multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Information processing speed (IPS) is frequently impaired in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and can potentially interfere with functioning in other cognitive domains. A relationship between IPS and visuospatial memory has been shown, but the impact of IPS on the separate components of visuospatial memory remains unclear. In this study, we aim to investigate the association between IPS impairment and encoding, active and passive retrieval, and learning indices of visuospatial memory in PwMS. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 92 PwMS with cognitive complaints and 29 matche

Videoconference-integrated, computer-assisted cognitive testing improves the remote assessment of processing speed and attention.

OBJECTIVE: Remote videoconference neuropsychological assessments offer opportunities that remain under-exploited. We aimed to evaluate teleneuropsychology (TeleNP)-suitable oral and digital versions of the Symbol Digit Modalities Task (SDMT) and Trail Making Test (TMT) - widely used measures of speed and attention - by comparing them to their written counterparts. METHODS: Three-hundred and twenty-one Australian Epilepsy Project (AEP) adult participants with seizure disorders completed the written SDMT and TMT in-person. One-hundred and forty-four of these participants also completed the oral

Information processing speed and disease severity predict real-world ambulation in persons with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Impairments in real-world gait quality and quantity are multifaceted for individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), encompassing mobility, cognition, and fear of falling. However, these factors are often examined independently, limiting insights into the combined contributions they make to real-world ambulation. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do mobility, cognition, and fear of falling contribute to real-world gait quality and quantity in individuals with MS? METHODS: Twenty individuals with MS underwent a series of cognitive assessments, including the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test

Exploring subcortical pathology and processing speed in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder with myelin water imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) affects the optic nerves and spinal cord but can also cause focal brain inflammation. Subcortical pathology may contribute to the etiology of cognitive deficits in NMOSD. Using myelin water imaging, we investigated cerebral normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) and thalamic metrics and their association with cognition in NMOSD participants compared to healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Seventeen NMOSD participants and 21 HC were scanned on a 3.0-Tesla MRI scanner using a multicomponent driven-equilibrium single-pulse observati

Semantic fluency and processing speed are reduced in non-cognitively impaired participants with Parkinson's disease.

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with a range of cognitive deficits. Few studies have carefully examined the subtle impacts of PD on cognition among patients who do not meet formal criteria for MCI or dementia. The aim of the current study was thus to describe the impact of PD on cognition in those without cognitive impairment in a well-characterized cohort. Methods: Non-cognitively impaired participants (122 with PD, 122 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers) underwent extensive cognitive testing. Linear regression analyses compared diagnostic group performance across cog

A ketogenic supplement improves white matter energy supply and processing speed in mild cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION: White matter (WM) energy supply is crucial for axonal function and myelin maintenance. An exogenous source of ketones, the brain's alternative fuel to glucose, bypasses the brain's glucose-specific energy deficit and improves cognitive outcomes in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). How an additional supply of ketones affects glucose or ketone uptake in specific WM fascicles in MCI has not previously been reported. METHODS: This 6-month interventional study included MCI participants randomized to a placebo (n = 16) or ketogenic medium chain triglyceride (kMCT; n = 17) drink. A neur

Acquisition and processing of high-speed atomic force microscopy videos for single amyloid aggregate observation.

The structural dynamics of the amyloid protein aggregation process are associated with neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. High-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) is able to visualize the structural dynamics of individual aggregate species that otherwise cannot be distinguished. HS-AFM observations also detect impurities in the sample, and thus, experiments require relatively high sample purity. To derive valid information regarding the structural dynamics of the sample from the high-speed AFM images, a correction of the influence caused by th

Visual processing speed in hemianopia patients secondary to acquired brain injury: a new assessment methodology.

BACKGROUND: There is a clinical need to identify diagnostic parameters that objectively quantify and monitor the effective visual ability of patients with homonymous visual field defects (HVFDs). Visual processing speed (VPS) is an objective measure of visual ability. It is the reaction time (RT) needed to correctly search and/or reach for a visual stimulus. VPS depends on six main brain processing systems: auditory-cognitive, attentional, working memory, visuocognitive, visuomotor, and executive. We designed a new assessment methodology capable of activating these six systems and measuring RT
