Green synthesis of magnetite (Fe3O4) and hematite (Fe2O3) nanoparticles using Moringa oleifera and Psidium guajava leaf extracts for sustainable applications.

Magnetite (Fe₃O₄) and hematite (Fe₂O₃) nanoparticles hold significant potential for catalysis, environmental remediation, biomedicine, and energy generation. However, conventional synthesis methods for iron-oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are often complicated or involve hazardous reagents, limiting scalability. Although plant extract-mediated green synthesis offers better alternatives, many rely on rare or expensive biomaterials and hazardous precursors or pH-adjusting chemicals, compromising eco-friendliness and cost-effectiveness. To address these challenges, we developed a truly green, efficie

Sustainable chitosan and medicinal plant oils as natural edible coatings for postharvest quality preservation of guava fruits (Psidium guajava L.).

Postharvest loss of tropical fruits remains a significant challenge for food security and sustainability, as their delicate texture and high metabolic activity make them highly susceptible to rapid deterioration through handling and distribution. This study investigates the application of an edible coating technique to reduce loss, deterioration, and spoilage, and to increase the shelf-life of guava fruit. The fruits were immersed in chitosan and edible oils (moringa, lemongrass, marjoram, and rosemary). Chitosan (2%) and 1-2% moringa oil extended the shelf life of fruits by up to 24 days. Mor

Development of gel containing Psidium glaziovianum essential oil has in vitro antimicrobial activity and improves healing of excisional wounds in mice.

Wounds encompass physical, chemical, biological, induced damages to the skin or mucous membranes. In wound treatment, combating infections is a critical challenge due to their potential to impede recovery and inflict systemic harm on patients. Previously, the essential oil extracted from Psidium glaziovianum (PgEO) demonstrated antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory attributes, along with negligible oral toxicity. Hence, our study aimed to assess the effects of topically applying a gel formulation containing PgEO to excisional wounds in mice. Additionally, an in vitro antimicrobial assessment w

Guava (Psidium guajava) Fruit Extract Prepared by Supercritical CO2 Extraction Inhibits Intestinal Glucose Resorption in a Double-Blind, Randomized Clinical Study.

Inhibition of intestinal glucose resorption can serve as an effective strategy for the prevention of an increase in blood glucose levels. We have recently shown that various extracts prepared from guava (Psidium guajava) inhibit sodium-dependent glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1)- and glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2)-mediated glucose transport in vitro (Caco-2 cells) and in vivo (C57BL/6N mice). However, the efficacy in humans remains to be confirmed. For this purpose, we conducted a parallelized, randomized clinical study with young healthy adults. Thirty-one volunteers performed an oral glucose to

Impact of Plant Pre-Processing on the Chemical Profile of Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae) Essential Oil and Evaluation of Its Bioactive Potential.

The chemical composition and bioactivity of essential oils depend not only on agronomic and environmental factors but also on the pre-processing of the plant material, a step that is rarely evaluated. Leaf essential oils of Psidium guajava L. were obtained by hydrodistillation from fresh or previously frozen leaves fragmented manually or mechanically, and assessed for GC-MS composition, cytotoxicity and biological activities. Fresh leaves ground in a mixer (EOFH-M) gave a sesquiterpene-rich profile dominated by β-caryophyllene and α-humulene, along with the best cell-viability profile in L929

Characterization of the key aroma compounds in pink guava (Psidium guajava L.) by means of aroma re-engineering experiments and omission tests.

Seventeen aroma-active volatiles, previously identified with high flavor dilution factors in fresh, pink Colombian guavas (Psidium guajava L.), were quantified by stable isotope dilution assays. On the basis of the quantitative data and odor thresholds in water, odor activity values (OAV; ratio of concentration to odor threshold) were calculated. High OAVs were determined for the green, grassy smelling (Z)-3-hexenal and the grapefruit-like smelling 3-sulfanyl-1-hexanol followed by 3-sulfanylhexyl acetate (black currant-like), hexanal (green, grassy), ethyl butanoate (fruity), acetaldehyde (fre
