An examination of frequent nursing interventions and outcomes in an adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit.

Little is known about which nursing interventions used in adolescent psychiatric inpatient treatment demonstrate improvements in outcome in the 'real world' setting, despite an increase in external outcomes reporting requirements. This paper examines nursing and other multidisciplinary interventions commonly used at the Youth Inpatient Unit, Christchurch, New Zealand, in relation to improvements in outcomes as measured by the Health of the Nation Outcome Scales for Children and Adolescents, utilizing data gathered prospectively as part of an ongoing quality assurance and outcomes project. Psychiatric nurses' attitudes to antipsychotic depots in Hong Kong and comparison with London.

Psychiatric nurses' attitudes to depots have only been explored in the UK. We conducted a cross-sectional attitudinal study for Hong Kong psychiatric nurses and also conducted international comparisons for nurses' views about depots. A pre-existing UK questionnaire on clinicians' attitudes and knowledge regarding depots was updated for the present study. Participants were 98 psychiatric nurses who attended an academic meeting. The majority of respondents had positive views regarding their role in depot administration; most reported that they had sufficient training (84%). However, many did not

The role of advanced practice psychiatric nurses in treating tobacco use and dependence.

Tobacco use is treatable and the benefits of smoking cessation are impressive, yet like other health care providers, psychiatric nurses have failed to consistently assess and treat tobacco use effectively. Tobacco use continues to cause illness, disability, and death at unprecedented rates. Nicotine addiction is drug abuse and it is a chronic disease and needs to be treated as such. There are clear health benefits to smoking cessation regardless of the age of smoking initiation or the age of smoking cessation. Advanced practice psychiatric nurses (APPNs) are in a unique position to make an imp

Delayed recall of childhood sexual abuse: psychiatric nursing's responsibilities to clients.

In no other area of psychiatric care is such suspicion being cast on clients as in the area of delayed recall of childhood sexual abuse. Adult survivors of childhood abuse are encountered in nursing contexts of all kinds. Psychiatric nurses should be the ones that other nurses and members of the public can look to for guidance and clinical wisdom about dissociative amnesia for childhood abuse. It is incumbent on psychiatric nurses, especially those who publish about clinical issues, to provide the most accurate and complete available knowledge, to prioritize clients' needs, and to recommend ca

Nursing students' lived experiences during their first psychiatric clinical placement: a hermeneutic phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric nursing is one of the most demanding areas in clinical practice. Undergraduate nursing students often experience fear, stigma, and uncertainty during their initial clinical placement in psychiatric settings. Understanding these early experiences is important for informing strategies to support students' confidence, empathy, and professional identity. Limited research has explored how nursing students in Saudi Arabia interpret their first transition into psychiatric settings; this study aimed to explore the lived experiences of nursing students during their initial clini

Domperidone Withdrawal in a Nursing Female with Pre-existing Psychiatric Illness: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: In this report, we describe a case of domperidone withdrawal in a woman with a history of major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), who experienced a recurrence of these disorders after stopping domperidone. CASE PRESENTATION: The symptoms improved after the restarting of domperidone and disappeared gradually as the drug was tapered and discontinued. Clinicians should consider domperidone withdrawal a differential diagnosis in women with a history of depression or anxiety who present with an acute onset of these symptoms following the abrupt discontinuatio

Suggested community psychiatric nursing interventions with clients suffering from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Clients suffering from the fasting and gorging syndromes of anorexia and bulimia nervosa are at significant risk of self-harm even if treated with apparent success in hospital. Two major issues (not inevitably co-existing) appear to be at work in these illnesses; distorted perception by the sufferer of his or her own body appearance and stressful interpersonal relationships originating in one of a variety of groups of which the sufferer is a member. (Fear of psychosexual maturity, that is, the clients' inability to develop an age-appropriate sexual identity, is treated in this paper as being t

Nursing home care as an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization. A Veterans Administration cooperative study.

Nursing homes have played a major role in deinstitutionalization, and their increased use for the mentally ill has been questioned. We performed a controlled study of nursing homes as an alternative to continued psychiatric hospitalization. Men (N = 403) referred for nursing home placement from eight Veterans Administration medical centers were randomly assigned to community nursing homes (CNHs), Veterans Administration nursing care units, continued care on the same ward, or transfer to another psychiatric ward. Patients met defined criteria for schizophrenia or organic brain disease. Data wer

Artificial Intelligence in Mental Health Care: Implications for Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing-A Scoping Review.

AI is increasingly being integrated into mental health support, with applications spanning chatbots, large language models, digital therapeutics and clinical decision-support systems. Although these technologies have demonstrated potential to improve access to care and support clinical practice, their implications for psychiatric mental health nursing (PMHN) remain insufficiently synthesized. This scoping review aimed to examine how AI is being applied in mental health care and to synthesize its implications for psychiatric mental health nursing practice and related nursing-relevant outcomes.

The Mentally Ill in Jail: Contemporary Clinical and Practice Perspectives for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing.

Individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) who are incarcerated pose major treatment challenges for both correctional personnel and healthcare providers, yet deserve the same high standards of care as those in traditional mental health facilities. The literature references these challenges as types of mental health treatment disparities, and calls for improvement measures from clinicians, researchers, policy-makers, and advocates. From the standpoint of psychiatric-mental health (PMH) nursing, this paper explores, examines, and offers some contemporary clinical and practice perspectives f

Professional identity development among male psychiatric nurses in China: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Men remain underrepresented in nursing and often face gender stereotypes, occupational stigma, and challenges related to professional identity. These issues may be particularly pronounced in psychiatric nursing, where care involves therapeutic relationships, emotional labor, long-term patient contact, and exposure to aggression. This study explored how professional identity developed over the careers of male psychiatric nurses in China. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted with 16 male psychiatric nurses from a specialist psychiatric hospital in China. Data were collected be

The moderating role of social support on workplace violence and stress among psychiatric nurses.

Exposure to violent acts is considered one of the major stressful events psychiatric nurses are exposed to. Social support has been found to reduce nurses' stress and alleviate their experience of workplace violence; however, no accounts are available on whether social support moderates the relationship between workplace violence and stress. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the moderating role of social support on workplace violence and stress among psychiatric nurses. A cross-sectional descriptive and predictive design was utilized. A total of 195 psychiatric nurses were recrui
