[Radiation exposure caused by the OrthoScan mini C-arm in hand surgery: a one-year case series].

BACKGROUND: Mobile X-ray imaging systems are standard in the operating theatre. Mini-C-arms are the prevailing technology in hand surgery. Unfortunately, the exposure to Mini-C-arm radiation is often underestimated. METHODS: For one year, the intraoperative radiation dose delivered by an OrthoScan High Definition Mini-C-arm with a flat panel detector was measured using headband and finger ring dosimeters in all hand and wrist surgeries performed by three experienced hand surgeons. RESULTS: Two hundred and thirteen patients underwent surgical treatment involving the use of an OrthoScan High D

The importance of time-resolved personal Dosimetry in space: The ISS Crew Active Dosimeter.

Monitoring space radiation is of vital importance for risk reduction strategies in human space exploration. Radiation protection programs on Earth and in space rely on personal and area radiation monitoring instruments. Crew worn radiation detectors are crucial for successful crew radiation protection programs since they measure what each crewmember experiences in different shielding configurations within the space habitable volume. The Space Radiation Analysis Group at NASA Johnson Space Center investigated several compact, low power, real-time instruments for personal dosimetry. Following th

Dose assessment in environmental radiological protection: State of the art and perspectives.

Exposure to radiation is a potential hazard to humans and the environment. The Fukushima accident reminded the world of the importance of a reliable risk management system that incorporates the dose received from radiation exposures. The dose to humans from exposure to radiation can be quantified using a well-defined system; its environmental equivalent, however, is still in a developmental state. Additionally, the results of several papers published over the last decade have been criticized because of poor dosimetry. Therefore, a workshop on environmental dosimetry was organized by the STAR (

A criticism of three arguments on recurrent imaging and risk.

Managing radiation protection (RP) in relation to recurrent imaging continues to be debated. Recent arguments have focussed on high cumulative effective dose (CED), especially where it exceeds 100 mSv. This article argues that CED should not be the primary focus for tracking concerns on recurrent imaging. Arguments which advocate for increased RP measures after 100 mSv is exceeded are criticised as being in conflict with the linear no threshold model. Finally, a view of dose history as adding to background risk is discussed.

Particle showers detected on ISS in Timepix pixel detectors.

We detect regular particle showers in several compact pixel detectors, distributed over the International Space Station. These showers are caused by high energy galactic cosmic rays, with energies often in the 10 s of TeV or higher. We survey the frequency of these events, their dependence on location on ISS, and their independence of the location of ISS, on its orbit. The Timepix detectors used allow individual particle tracks to be resolved, providing a possibility to perform physical analysis of shower events, which we demonstrate. In terms of radiation dosimetry, these showers indicate cer

Assessment of Occupational Exposure in Medical Practice in the Region of Hohhot, China, for the Period 2004-2020.

Individual monitoring is of great significance in efforts to protect the health of radiation workers and improve the level of radiation protection and management. This paper presents a retrospective analysis of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation from medical practice in the region of Hohhot, China, from 2004 to 2020. Results show that the average annual effective dose of occupationally exposed workers in medical practice significantly declined from 1.44 mSv in 2005 to 0.29 mSv in 2020 (Z = -5.23, P < 0.05). The number of medical radiation workers increased by 181%, the composition of

A preliminary study on the radiation dose reduction during catheterization procedures using simple partial patient shielding.

Reduction in X-ray exposure during cardiac catheterization is important to reduce radiation risks to operators and personnel. Reducing scattered radiation from the patient can achieve this goal. The goal of this study was to evaluate the reduction in radiation using simple partial shielding of patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. By putting a lead-based apron on the lower extremities of patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, we analyzed the reduction in total radiation dose with and without this shielding. One hundred and twelve patients were divided into two groups. In one group

Estimation of the radiological background and dose assessment in areas with naturally occurring uranium geochemical anomalies--a case study in the Iberian Massif (Central Portugal).

Naturally occurring uranium geochemical anomalies, representative of the several thousand recognized in the Portuguese section of the Iberian Massif and outcropping in three target areas with a total of a few thousand square metres, were subjected to a detailed study (1:1000 scale) to evaluate the radiological health-risk on the basis of a dose assessment. To reach this goal some radioactive isotopes from the uranium, thorium and potassium radioactive series were measured in 52 samples taken from different environmental compartments: soils, stream sediments, water, foodstuff (vegetables) and a

Cancer risks among studies of medical diagnostic radiation exposure in early life without quantitative estimates of dose.

BACKGROUND: There is accumulating evidence of excess risk of cancer in various populations exposed at acute doses below several tens of mSv or doses received over a protracted period. There is also evidence that relative risks are generally higher after radiation exposures in utero or in childhood. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We reviewed and summarised evidence from 89 studies of cancer following medical diagnostic exposure in utero or in childhood, in which no direct estimates of radiation dose are available. In all of the populations studied exposure was to sparsely ionizing radiation (X-rays). S

Modified X-ray tube for high dose rate FLASH radiotherapy research.

BACKGROUND: FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) has been demonstrated to achieve comparable tumor control to conventional radiotherapy (CONV-RT) while reducing radiation-induced damage to normal tissues. However, current FLASH experiments primarily rely on particle accelerators (e.g., linear electron accelerators or proton synchrotrons), which are expensive, scarce, and technically challenging to install, thereby hindering the widespread adoption and fundamental research of FLASH technology. In contrast, kV X-ray tubes offer a compact structure, low cost, and easy accessibility. By modifying their s

TOPAS-nBio simulation of the impact of ultrahigh dose rate and oxygen concentration on the Fenton reaction using the Fricke solution.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies have shown that FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT), delivering radiation in ultrahigh dose rates (UHDR), presents reduced healthy tissue toxicity, while maintaining an iso-effective tumor response compared to conventional radiotherapy (CONV-RT). This combined biological benefit was termed as "FLASH effect." The mechanisms responsible for this effect remain unclear, however, it has been hypothesized that the Fenton reaction which produces • OH can inflict substantial damage to biomolecules and thus might play a role in the "FLASH effect." PURPOSE: We propose to

[Saliva and intensity modulated radiotherapy].

A dry mouth (xerostomia) is a serious side effect for head and neck cancer patients treated with radiotherapy. The degree of xerostomia is dependent on the dosage in the parotid glands. New, advanced radiation techniques, such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy, can reduce the dosage in the parotid glands, resulting in a significant improvement in the functioning of these glands by comparison with conventional radiation techniques.
