Cure and reinfection patterns of geohelminthic infections after treatment in communities inhabiting the tropical rainforest of Assam, India.

Mass de-worming targeted at socio-economically poor communities can be considered as an option for communities living in the tropical forests of Assam who do not have access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation, and consequently have a higher risk of suffering from geohelminthic infection and associated morbidity. A random sample of 265 subjects was included in this study (134 males and 131 females). The chemotherapeutic regimen followed was a single dose of albendazole 400 mg. Stools samples were collected in 10% formol-saline for detection of infection before treatment. Post-treatmen

Venom composition of the scorpion Chactas exsul (Scorpiones: Chactidae) from the premontane tropical rainforest of Costa Rica.

Chactas exsul (Werner, 1939) is a specialized, saproxylic scorpion belonging to the diverse family Chactidae, inhabiting the humid tropical forests of Costa Rica and Panama. Characterized by robust pedipalps and a relatively small telson, C. exsul primarily relies on mechanical immobilization for prey capture, though it may utilize venom during challenging encounters. Despite its evolutionary importance, the venom of most of its members remains largely uncharacterized. In this study, we provide a comprehensive proteomic and biochemical analysis of the venom of C. exsul from the Caribbean lowla

The Australian Rainforest Rosewood: From Wood Characteristics to Chemical Profile and Biological Activity of Its Essential Oil.

Dysoxylum fraserianum (A.Juss.) Benth. (Meliaceae), commonly known as Australian rosewood, is a rare species endemic to the subtropical rainforests of New South Wales, whose hardwood is used for essential oil (EO) extraction. Despite its commercial relevance, an updated pharmacognostic characterisation of this species is lacking. This study aimed to provide an integrated analysis of the micromorphological, chemical, and biological features of D. fraserianum hardwood and its EO. Anatomical investigations revealed diffuse-porous wood and prismatic calcium oxalate crystals, while histochemical te

Whole genome sequencing unravels cryptic circulation of divergent dengue virus lineages in the rainforest region of Nigeria.

Dengue is often misclassified and underreported in Africa due to inaccurate differential diagnoses of nonspecific febrile illnesses such as malaria, sparsity of diagnostic testing and poor clinical and genomic surveillance. There are limited reports on the seroprevalence and genetic diversity of dengue virus (DENV) in humans and vectors in Nigeria. In this study, we investigated the epidemiology and genetic diversity of dengue in the rainforest region of Nigeria. We screened 515 febrile patients who tested negative for malaria and typhoid fever in three hospitals in Oyo and Ekiti States in sou

Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest infecting Amblyomma ovale (Acari: Ixodidae) in the Amazon Biome (Acre state, Brazil).

There is a lack of studies regarding tick-associated Rickettsia in the Amazon biome. Aiming to contribute to this knowledge, our research group collected ticks in the Western Amazon to better understand the tick fauna and their associated Rickettsia. In this study, we detected Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest DNA in the tick Amblyomma ovale Koch, 1844 in Rio Branco municipality, Acre state, northern Brazil. This is the first time that the R. parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest has been reported in the Amazon biome and is the first evidence of the circulation of a pathogenic spotted

Human Chondrocyte Activation by Toxins From Premolis semirufa, an Amazon Rainforest Moth Caterpillar: Identifying an Osteoarthritis Signature.

Pararamosis is a disease that occurs due to contact with the hairs of the larval stage of the Brazilian moth Premolis semirufa. Envenomation induces osteoarticular alterations with cartilage impairment that resembles joint synovitis. Thus, the toxic venom present in the caterpillar hairs interferes with the phenotype of the cells present in the joints, resulting in inflammation and promoting tissue injury. Therefore, to address the inflammatory mechanisms triggered by envenomation, we studied the effects of P. semirufa hair extract on human chondrocytes. We have selected for the investigation,

Histopathological aspects of the relationship Saimiri sciureus × Prosthenorchis elegans (Acanthocephala) in a preserved environment of an urban rainforest fragment.

Non-human primates are potential hosts for helminths of various phyla, and the presence of these parasites can cause changes in organ morphology and functionality. In this study, we present the alterations induced by the presence of acanthocephalan parasites in the small intestine of a snub-nosed monkey that died in the Bosque Rodrigues Alves, municipality of Belém, Pará state, Brazil. Ten specimens of Saimiri sciureus had their intestines analyzed and the parasites recovered were cleaned, quantified, fixed and observed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and fragments of

Communities of endophytic fungi in a Puerto Rican rainforest vary along a gradient of disturbance due to Hurricane Maria.

Increases in the frequency and intensity of hurricanes influence the structure, function, and resilience of Caribbean forests. Trees in such forests harbor diverse fungal endophytes within leaves and roots. Fungal endophytes often are important for plant health and stress responses, but how their communities are impacted by hurricanes is not well known. We measured forest disturbance in Carite State Forest in Puerto Rico ca. 16 months after the passage of Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 storm. In three sites, each comprising three plots representing a local gradient of hurricane disturbance, we

Characterization of the first Wolbachia from the genus Scaptodrosophila, a male-killer from the rainforest species S. claytoni.

The Scaptodrosophila genus represents a large group of drosophilids with a worldwide distribution and a predominance of species in Australia, but there is little information on the presence and impacts of Wolbachia endosymbionts in this group. Here we describe the first Wolbachia infection from this group, wClay isolated from Scaptodrosophila claytoni (van Klinken), a species from the east coast of Australia. The infection is polymorphic in natural populations, occurring at a frequency of around 6%-10%. wClay causes male killing, producing female-biased lines; most lines showed 100% male killi

Investigation on possible transmission of monkeys' Plasmodium to human in a populations living in the equatorial rainforest of the Democratic republic of Congo.

Plasmodiums are protozoa that may infect various hosts. Only five species are now recognized as naturally parasitizing humans: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium knowlesi. This fifth species, P. knowlesi, previously identified as naturally parasitizing the monkey Macaca fascicularis, has been microscopically confused for a long time with P. malariae or P. falciparum and it was not possible to correctly differentiate them until the advent of molecular biology. To date, natural human infections with P. knowlesi only occur in Southeast As

Leaf traits and decomposition in tropical rainforests: revisiting some commonly held views and towards a new hypothesis.

Proper estimates of decomposition are essential for tropical forests, given their key role in the global carbon (C) cycle. However, the current paradigm for litter decomposition is insufficient to account for recent observations and may limit model predictions for highly diverse tropical ecosystems. In light of recent findings from a nutrient-poor Amazonian rainforest, we revisit the commonly held views that: litter traits are a mere legacy of live leaf traits; nitrogen (N) and lignin are the key litter traits controlling decomposition; and favourable climatic conditions result in rapid decomp

Ocular onchocerciasis and intensity of infection in the community. III. West African rainforest foci of the vector Simulium sanctipauli.

The community pattern of ocular onchocerciasis is described for 11 villages from the forest area in Côte d'Ivoire where S. sanctipauli is the princial vector. An analytical method is applied which relates indices of ocular onchocerciasis with the Community Microfilarial Load (CMFL) and compares the results with the ocular onchocerciasis pattern found in the West African savanna. In spite of high transmission levels as estimated by entomological indices, the CMFLs were relatively low which complicated the characterization of the ocular disease pattern. Nevertheless, it could be shown that ocula

Ocular onchocerciasis and intensity of infection in the community. II. West African rainforest foci of the vector Simulium yahense.

A novel method of analysis was used to describe community patterns of ocular onchocerciasis in relation to the intensity of infection in West African forest villages where S. yahense is the sole vector. The pattern is completely different from that found in the savanna, even after correction for the intensity of infection as measured by the Community Microfilarial Load (CMFL). Lesions of the anterior segment of the eye as well as onchocercal blindness either do not occur or occur only sporadically with increasing CMFL in the Yahense forest whilst a steep linear relation exists between the prev

Strongyloidiasis as a Focal Household Cluster of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis in Rural Tropical Rainforest Southern Thailand: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: In southern Thailand, characterized by high rainfall for 9 months each year (2340 mm annually), hookworm prevalence is consistently higher than that of Strongyloides stercoralis. Such wet climatic conditions may favor hookworm transmission while limiting S. stercoralis. Conversely, living in crowded, cluster settlements may enhance the transmission of S. stercoralis. We aimed to determine whether S. stercoralis exhibits a focal distribution pattern-often related to close contact within households or small communities-and whether this pattern distinctively differs from that of hookw

Clinical and biological characteristics of Caraparu virus (Orthobunyavirus) infection in the Amazonian rainforest: a rare case report in a French military.

BACKGROUND: Caraparu virus (Orthobunyavirus caraparuense) is a poorly described tropical South American arbovirus. Diagnosing acute undifferentiated febrile illness in the Amazon remains a challenge for travel medicine practitioners. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a French soldier deployed in French Guiana who developed acute self-limited fever and headache associated with mild leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and hepatic cytolysis during a several-day mission in the Amazon rainforest. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the clinical and biological features of this understudied arboviral infec

Low exposure of dogs to ticks and Rickettsia spp. in the vicinity of the largest inland Atlantic rainforest remnant in Southern Brazil.

Dogs accessing natural areas in Brazil are exposed to tick species typically associated with wild carnivores, some of which are vectors of pathogenic Rickettsia. Infested dogs may transport ticks into households and act as amplifying hosts for these agents. Iguaçu National Park (INP), a major inland Atlantic Forest reserve in Brazil, harbors at least nine tick species and five Rickettsia species. This study evaluated tick infestation in 116 rural dogs from properties along most of the 420 km perimeter of INP and 22 urban dogs from forest-adjacent areas in Foz do Iguaçu. Sera from 39 dogs were

The pattern of gene amplification of members of the Plasmodium vivax erythrocyte binding-like proteins family across the Amazon rainforest.

BACKGROUND: In Plasmodium vivax malaria, the Duffy Binding Protein (DBP), a key erythrocyte binding-like (EBL) protein, enables invasion of DARC (Duffy Antigen/Receptor for Chemokines) positive reticulocytes. Another EBL member, the erythrocyte binding protein 2 (EBP2, also known as EBP/ DBP2), shares structural features with DBP, suggesting a role in erythrocyte invasion. P. vivax genomes may harbour multiple ebl gene copies, though their functional role is unclear. Considering DBP and EBP2 as key vaccine candidates, this study investigates copy number variation (CNV) in these two ebl genes a
