Population Structure of Non-ST6 Listeria monocytogenes Isolated in the Red Meat and Poultry Value Chain in South Africa.

Meat products have been implicated in many listeriosis outbreaks globally, however there is a dearth of information on the diversity of L. monocytogenes isolates circulating in food products in South Africa. The aim of this study was to investigate the population structure of L. monocytogenes isolated in the meat value chain within the South African market. Based on whole-genome sequence analysis, a total of 217 isolates were classified into two main lineage groupings namely lineages I (n = 97; 44.7%) and II (n = 120; 55.3%). The lineage groups were further differentiated into IIa (n = 95, 43.

Red and processed meat intake is associated with higher gastric cancer risk: a meta-analysis of epidemiological observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Red and processed meat was concluded as a limited-suggestive risk factor of gastric cancer by the World Cancer Research Fund. However, recent epidemiological studies have yielded inconclusive results. METHODS: We searched Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from their inception to April 2013 for both cohort and case-control studies which assessed the association between red and/or processed meat intake and gastric cancer risk. Study-specific relative risk estimates were polled by random-effect or fixed-effect models. RESULTS: Twelve cohort and thirty case-control studies we

Global burden of breast cancer and its association with red meat consumption: spatiotemporal trends, projections, and triangulation of evidence.

BACKGROUND: Despite being the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women globally, a comprehensive understanding of breast cancer (BC) remains limited due to gaps in data quality, geographic coverage, burden metrics, and risk factor attribution. This study utilized a multi-model approach to assess the global burden of BC and its projected trends, complemented by Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the potential causal relationship between red meat consumption and BC risk. METHODS: This study utilized GBD data from 1990 to 2021 to assess the epidemiology of BC. Temporal tr

Total mercury, methyl mercury, and selenium levels in the red meat of small cetaceans sold for human consumption in Japan.

We surveyed the total mercury (T-Hg) and methyl mercury (M-Hg) levels in red meat products (n = 160) from small cetacean species sold for human consumption in markets throughout Japan from 2000 to 2003. Genetic identification showed that the red meat products originated from nine species: false killer whale, bottlenose dolphin, short-finned pilot whale, striped dolphin, rough-toothed dolphin, Risso's dolphin, pantropical spotted dolphin, Baird's beaked whale, and Dall's porpoise. T-Hg and M-Hg concentrations in all red meat products exceeded the provisional permitted levels of T-Hg (0.4 microg

Red meat consumption and its association with hypertension and hyperlipidaemia among adult Maasai pastoralists of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Red meat is an important dietary source of protein and other essential nutrients. Its high intake has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, including hypertension (HTN) and hyperlipidaemia (HLP). Despite being physically active, the Maasai at Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) depend heavily on animals' products as their staple food with fewer intakes of vegetables or fruits due to restriction from carrying out agricultural activities within the NCA. This study aimed at determining the prevalence of HTN and HLP and their association with

Multi-omics integration uncovers the molecular mechanism underlying variation in meat quality across different muscles of Pingliang Red cattle.

This study integrated metabolomics and proteomics to uncover core metabolic pathways underlying variation in meat quality among three cuts of Pingliang Red cattle: topside, striploin, and clod. The pH value and b* value of the topside were significantly higher than those of the two muscles (P < 0.05). Metabolomics identified 29, 15, and 13 notably abundant metabolites in topside, striploin, and clod, respectively, including 5-diphosphate, PS(18:0/20:4), and L-threonine (P < 0.05). Proteomics illustrated that there were 35, 64, and 19 differentially expressed proteins in topside, striploin, and

Trimethylamine N-Oxide Plasma Levels Following Red Meat and Cod Fish Intake: A Pilot Crossover Trial in Hemodialysis Patients.

SCOPE: The uremic toxin trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) accumulates in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with its progression, cardiovascular disease, and other complications. The gut microbiota produces TMAO from substrates mainly found in red meat, eggs, and dairy. However, some saltwater fish also contain high levels of TMAO. Although fish consumption is generally linked to beneficial effects, its effects on CKD patients require further research. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study compares the effect of red meat and cod fish intake on TMAO plasma levels in CKD patient

Dietary intake of the red meat-derived glycan Neu5Gc fuels colorectal cancer through up-regulation of Wnt signaling pathway.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant health concern, often linked to western diets, particularly red meat consumption. Several mechanisms, such as the high heme iron content, the formation of N-nitroso compounds (NOCs), heterocyclic amines (HCAs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), have been suggested to explain red meat's cancer-promoting effects. However, these factors are also found in fish and poultry, which are not linked to CRC risk. A new hypothesis attributes red meat's impact on CRC to its high content of a nonhuman glycan. While most mammals express N-acetylneuraminic a

The microbial gbu gene cluster links cardiovascular disease risk associated with red meat consumption to microbiota L-carnitine catabolism.

The heightened cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk observed among omnivores is thought to be linked, in part, to gut microbiota-dependent generation of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) from L-carnitine, a nutrient abundant in red meat. Gut microbial transformation of L-carnitine into trimethylamine (TMA), the precursor of TMAO, occurs via the intermediate γ-butyrobetaine (γBB). However, the interrelationship of γBB, red meat ingestion and CVD risks, as well as the gut microbial genes responsible for the transformation of γBB to TMA, are unclear. In the present study, we show that plasma γBB levels

Valorization of Red Grape Pomace Waste Using Polyethylene Glycol and Fibrolytic Enzymes: Physiological and Meat Quality Responses in Broilers.

The amount of grape pomace (GP) waste that can be included as a functional feed in broiler diets is limited by anti-nutritional compounds such as fiber and condensed tannins. This study evaluated the effect of pre-treating GP with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and a cellulolytic enzyme mixture on physiological and meat quality parameters of broilers. Cobb 500 broilers (249.2 ± 20.31 g live-weight) were reared on five isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets: 1. Commercial chicken diet (CON); 2. CON containing untreated GP at 100 g/kg (dGP); 3. CON containing 100 g/kg GP pre-treated with PEG (50 g/kg)

High doses of riboflavin and the elimination of dietary red meat promote the recovery of some motor functions in Parkinson's disease patients.

Abnormal riboflavin status in the absence of a dietary deficiency was detected in 31 consecutive outpatients with Parkinson's disease (PD), while the classical determinants of homocysteine levels (B6, folic acid, and B12) were usually within normal limits. In contrast, only 3 of 10 consecutive outpatients with dementia without previous stroke had abnormal riboflavin status. The data for 12 patients who did not complete 6 months of therapy or did not comply with the proposed treatment paradigm were excluded from analysis. Nineteen PD patients (8 males and 11 females, mean age +/- SD = 66.2+/-8.

Distribution and toxicity of mercury in rats after oral administration of mercury-contaminated whale red meat marketed for human consumption.

Toothed-whales and dolphins have been hunted for human consumption in Japan, and their muscles (red meats) are highly contaminated with mercury (Hg). We investigated the distribution and toxicity of Hg in rats after oral administration of Hg-contaminated whale red meat marketed for human consumption in Japan. Rats were orally administered the red meat homogenate for seven consecutive days (0.5 g red meat/kg-bw/day). The red meat administered to rats contained 81microg/g of total mercury (T-Hg) and 13.4 microg/g of methyl mercury (M-Hg). This dose corresponds to the human consumption of 210 g r

Health co-benefits of sustainable dietary transitions to reduced red and processed meat intake in the United Kingdom: a modelling study.

PURPOSE: Reducing meat intake and increasing plant-based food consumption are priorities for chronic disease prevention and environmental sustainability across Europe. Previous modelling has outlined how policy interventions could shift dietary patterns to align with meat reduction targets, but the resulting health impacts remain unexplored. METHODS: We quantified the projected health impacts of the UK Climate Change Committee's (CCC) dietary targets-a 35% or 50% reduction in meat consumption-focusing on red and processed meat and substitution with vegetables and legumes, on incidence and mor

Effects of season and antler growth on carcass traits and meat quality in wild male red deer harvested by selective stalking.

Seasonal variation in temperate ecosystems influences food availability and the energetic demands associated with thermoregulation and reproduction, shaping physiological traits such as meat composition in wild animals. However, the specific effects of seasonality on meat quality in wild red deer remain insufficiently understood. This study evaluated how seasonality -represented by hunting month (September, January, April, and June)- affects the quality of the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle in 32 adult wild male red deer harvested under minimal stress conditions. We hypothesized that
