Towards a Remote Patient Monitoring Platform for Comprehensive Risk Evaluations for People with Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) significantly affect the lives of patients and increase the risk of hospital stays and amputation. We suggest a remote monitoring platform for better DFU care. This system uses digital health metrics (scaled from 0 to 10, where higher scores indicate a greater risk of slow healing) to provide a comprehensive overview through a visual interface. The platform features smart offloading devices that capture behavioral metrics such as offloading adherence, daily steps, and cadence. Coupled with remotely measurable frailty and phenotypic metrics, it offers an in-depth pat

Remote Monitoring Telemedicine (REMOTE) Platform for Patients With Anxiety Symptoms and Alcohol Use Disorder: Protocol for a Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring mental health outcomes has traditionally been based on heuristic decisions, often based on scarce, subjective evidence, making the clinical decisions made by professionals, as well as the monitoring of these diseases, subject to flaws. However, the digital phenotype, which refers to the analysis of data collected by measuring human behavior with mobile sensors and smart bracelets, is a promising tool for filling this gap in current clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are to develop the digital phenotyping of patients with alcohol use disorder and

Enhancing the resilience of remote patient monitoring and hospital-at-home systems: a digital-twin-based framework.

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) enables clinical oversight of patients outside the hospital via connected devices and supporting digital infrastructure. Hospital-at-home (HaH) is a high-acuity specialization within RPM. As RPM programs expand in scale and acuity, they face significant challenges to resilience that can compromise patient safety. We propose integrating simple patient Digital Twins (DTs), which are personalized models continuously updated with real-time data, to enhance the resilience of both HaH and RPM systems by supporting informed clinical management even when primary systems

Dedicated day surgery supported by remote patient monitoring for appendicectomy and cholecystectomy procedures: A cost-effectiveness analysis.

BackgroundManaging inpatient demand is challenging, especially for high-volume emergency surgical casemixes such as acute appendicitis and cholecystitis. These conditions drive unplanned admissions and consume significant bed capacity, despite their suitability for accelerated pathways. We evaluated a bundled care model for this casemix, incorporating same-day discharge protocols and remote patient monitoring to reduce unnecessary inpatient stays and optimize hospital resources.MethodsA decision tree model compared the proposed same-day discharge surgical care model supported by remote patient

Prospective Cohort Study of Remote Patient Monitoring with and without Care Coordination for Hypertension in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-office blood pressure (BP) measurements contribute valuable information for guiding clinical management of hypertension. Measurements from home devices can be directly transmitted to patients' electronic health record for use in remote monitoring programs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare in primary care practice care coordinator-assisted implementation of remote patient monitoring (RPM) for hypertension to RPM implementation alone and to usual care. METHODS: This was a pragmatic observational cohort study. Patients aged 65 to 85 years with Medicare insurance from tw

Water removal during automated peritoneal dialysis assessed by remote patient monitoring and modelling of peritoneal tissue hydration.

Water removal which is a key treatment goal of automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) can be assessed cycle-by-cycle using remote patient monitoring (RPM). We analysed ultrafiltration patterns during night APD following a dry day (APDDD; no daytime fluid exchange) or wet day (APDWD; daytime exchange). Ultrafiltration for each APD exchange were recorded for 16 days using RPM in 14 patients. The distributed model of fluid and solute transport was applied to simulate APD and to explore the impact of changes in peritoneal tissue hydration on ultrafiltration. We found lower ultrafiltration (mL, median

Relationship Between Adherence to Remote Monitoring and Patient Characteristics: Observational Study in Women With Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality in mothers, fetuses, and newborns. New technologies, such as remote monitoring (RM), were introduced in 2015 into the care of patients at risk of PIH in Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (Genk, Belgium) to improve both maternal and neonatal outcomes. In developing new strategies for obstetric care in pregnant women, including RM, it is important to understand the psychosocial characteristics associated with adherence to RM to optimize care. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the role

The Current Landscape of Remote Patient Monitoring Regarding Diabetes Mellitus and Hypoglycemia: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is characterized by impaired glucose regulation, predisposing patients to both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia, particularly frequent in insulin-treated individuals, remains a serious but underrecognized complication. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) technologies, such as continuous glucose monitors, smartphone apps, and hybrid closed-loop systems with remote monitoring capabilities, have emerged as promising tools to improve glycemic control and prevent hypoglycemia in nonclinical settings. Evidence examining the use of RPM technologies has expanded r

The Unfinished Ecosystem: Why Remote Patient Monitoring Has Matured Unevenly, and What Closing the Gap Will Require.

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is widely framed as a foundational technology for the next generation of chronic-disease care. Specific applications-pacemaker follow-up, hypertension cohorts, structured heart-failure programmes, post-surgical biosensor protocols, and virtual wards-now generate measurable clinical and economic value. Yet a decade of evaluations and implementation studies suggests that the surrounding ecosystem has matured unevenly: working applications coexist with persistent cross-cutting fragility. In this Perspective we argue that four structural gaps continue to constrain R

Reducing Emergency Department Strain Through Usable Wearables: A Proof-of-Concept for Multi-sensor Remote Patient Monitoring.

Rising emergency department (ED) cases are straining hospital resources, compromising care quality, and elevating mortality risks. Remote patient monitoring via wearable devices offers a pathway to alleviate this burden, yet many are hindered by short battery life, discomfort, and limited clinical utility. This proof-of-concept describes a compact, wrist-worn wearable for continuous remote health monitoring. It integrates multi-sensors for heart rate, body temperature, blood oxygen saturation, and accelerometer-based motion/fall detection. Data streams via Bluetooth to a smartphone app, trigge

Remote Patient Monitoring for Hypertension: Feasibility and Outcomes of a Clinic-Based Pilot in a Minority Population.

BACKGROUND: In the US 48% of adults have hypertension, with direct costs in excess of $130 billion per year. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) has been discussed as a useful tool in the treatment of hypertension, but few studies evaluate its cost effectiveness or efficacy in minority, lower socio-economic (SES) populations. Our study aims to evaluate the clinical and financial outcomes of RPM in hypertension management in a primarily minority, low-SES population. METHODS: In this prospective cohort pilot study, patients with uncontrolled primary hypertension (defined via Joint National Committe

Patient-led Remote IntraCapillary pharmacoKinetic Sampling (fingerPRICKS) for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Because of COVID-19 public health restrictions, telemedicine has replaced conventional outpatient follow up for most patients with chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disorders treated with biologic drugs. Innovative solutions to facilitate remote therapeutic drug monitoring are therefore required. Low-volume intracapillary blood sampling can be undertaken by patients at home and samples returned by post to central laboratories. We sought to report the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on requests for therapeutic drug monitoring and the equivalence, acceptability and effect

Remote Monitoring for Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Current Status and the Future of the Field.

As a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many advances in telehealth have been made that save time and reduce travel costs for patients. Telehealth, specifically video visits, was especially embraced by patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, remote clinic visits are only one part of the equation for remote IBD care. Patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis have a significant testing burden, and many strides still need to be made to improve all aspects of their care, including remote monitoring (testing at home) of biochemical markers (eg, C-reactive protein and

A current and future outlook on upcoming technologies in remote monitoring of patients with heart failure.

Heart failure is a major health and economic challenge in both developing and developed countries. Despite advances in pharmacological and device therapies for patients with a reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and heart failure, their quality of life and exercise capacity are often persistently impaired, morbidity and mortality remain high and the health economic and societal costs are considerable. For patients with heart failure and preserved LVEF, diuretic management has an essential role for controlling congestion and symptoms, even if no intervention has convincingly shown
