Neurological complications of rotavirus infection in pediatric patients: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Rotavirus remains a leading global cause of acute gastroenteritis. Although most affected children fully recover, neurological complications may occur. This study evaluated the frequency of neurological complications in pediatric patients at our center and assessed their developmental trajectories and long-term outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 398 patients (0-18 years) with clinically diagnosed gastroenteritis and stool-confirmed rotavirus infection, evaluated between February 2017 and September 2023 at the pediatric inpatient and outpatient clinics of the University

Effects of Portulaca oleracea L. Polysaccharide on piglets infected with porcine rotavirus.

Piglet diarrhea stands as the primary cause of piglet mortality, inflicting substantial economic losses to pig farmers. Porcine rotavirus (PoRV), a member of the Reoviridae family, bears responsibility for instigating diarrhea and severe dehydration, culminating in piglet fatalities. Portulaca oleracea L. (POL), a Chinese medicinal herb commonly utilized for its antiviral properties and effectiveness in treating diarrhea, holds promise for mitigating these effects. Nevertheless, the in vivo antiviral effect of Portulaca oleracea L. polysaccharide (POL-P), a key component of POL, on PoRV infect

Thyroid Storm Triggered by Rotavirus Infection in a 10-Year-Old Girl.

We encountered a case of Graves' disease in a pediatric patient who presented with thyroid storm (TS), the onset of which was triggered by rotavirus infection. Rotavirus is commonly associated with severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and dehydration-particularly in infants and young children. In more severe cases, it can also lead to altered consciousness and seizures. These symptoms can resemble those of TS, even in the absence of pre-existing hyperthyroidism. In cases of hyperthyroidism, these symptoms confirm the criteria for TS. Therefore, it is possible that some cases of TS are trig

The Role of Host Glycobiology and Gut Microbiota in Rotavirus and Norovirus Infection, an Update.

Rotavirus (RV) and norovirus (NoV) are the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) worldwide. Several studies have demonstrated that histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) have a role in NoV and RV infections since their presence on the gut epithelial surfaces is essential for the susceptibility to many NoV and RV genotypes. Polymorphisms in genes that code for enzymes required for HBGAs synthesis lead to secretor or non-secretor and Lewis positive or Lewis negative individuals. While secretor individuals appear to be more susceptible to RV infections, regarding NoVs infections, there are to

Estimated hospitalizations attributed to norovirus and rotavirus infection in Canada, 2006-2010.

Enteric viruses including norovirus and rotavirus are leading causes of gastroenteritis in Canada. However, only a small number of clinical cases are actually tested for these pathogens leading to systematic underestimation of attributed hospitalizations in administrative databases. The objective of this analysis was to estimate the number of hospitalizations due to norovirus and rotavirus in Canada. Hospitalization records for acute gastroenteritis-associated discharges at all acute-care hospitals in Canada between 2006 and 2011 were analysed. Cause-unspecified gastroenteritis hospitalization

A case of meningoencephalitis associated with G1P[8] rotavirus infection in a Japanese child.

We report the case of a 2-y, 11-month-old boy with G1P[8] rotavirus infection accompanied by acute meningoencephalitis. Substitutions in both the VP4 and VP7 genes were found in the identified strain. A commonly circulating G1P[8] rotavirus with such mutations might be associated with the pathogenesis of CNS complications, including meningoencephalitis.

Early response to rotavirus infection involves massive B cell activation.

Rotavirus is an acute enteric pathogen which induces severe diarrhea in infants and children. To determine the immune response to rotavirus in vivo, we used a mouse model of rotavirus infection. We observed dramatic increases in the sizes of both Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes, but not spleen, between 1 and 6 days after infection with a homologous strain of murine rotavirus, EC wild type. Histological analysis showed large increases in the numbers of lymphocytes in these same tissues in rotavirus-infected mice. Flow cytometric analysis confirmed the increase in numbers of lymphocyt

Establishment of a Porcine Small Intestinal Organoid Model for Porcine Rotavirus Infection.

Porcine rotavirus (PoRV), a major enteric pathogen, causes severe diarrhea, dehydration, high morbidity, and mortality, leading to significant economic losses in the porcine industry. In this study, we established a porcine small intestinal organoid culture system and developed an in vitro model for PoRV infection. Jejunal crypts were isolated from neonatal piglets and subsequently cultured to generate porcine small intestinal organoids in both three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) organoid formats, properties of which were verified via morphological assessment and immunostaining for

Porcine rotavirus mainly infects primary porcine enterocytes at the basolateral surface.

Intestinal epithelium functions as a barrier to protect multicellular organisms from the outside world. It consists of epithelial cells closely connected by intercellular junctions, selective gates which control paracellular diffusion of solutes, ions and macromolecules across the epithelium and keep out pathogens. Rotavirus is one of the major enteric viruses causing severe diarrhea in humans and animals. It specifically infects the enterocytes on villi of small intestines. The polarity of rotavirus replication in their target enterocytes and the role of intestinal epithelial integrity were e

Biphasic regulation of RNA interference during rotavirus infection by modulation of Argonaute2.

RNA interference (RNAi) is an evolutionary ancient innate immune response in plants, nematodes, and arthropods providing natural protection against viral infection. Viruses have also gained counter-defensive measures by producing virulence determinants called viral-suppressors-of-RNAi (VSRs). Interestingly, in spite of dominance of interferon-based immunity over RNAi in somatic cells of higher vertebrates, recent reports are accumulating in favour of retention of the antiviral nature of RNAi in mammalian cells. The present study focuses on the modulation of intracellular RNAi during infection

Relationship between asymptomatic rotavirus infection and jaundice in neonates: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus (RV) infection in neonates can be mild or even asymptomatic. In RV infection, jaundice is often reported, but the relationship between jaundice and RV infection has not been studied. This study aimed to determine the importance of asymptomatic RV screening in neonates with jaundice. METHODS: Neonates from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Chonbuk National University Hospital, those transferred from local obstetrics and gynecology hospitals and outpatient clinics were selected from 2014 to 2017. The study included only infants aged between 3 and 28 days. Jaundice

Neonatal seizures and white matter injury: Role of rotavirus infection and probiotics.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports associate rotavirus infection with neonatal seizures of distinctive white matter injury (WMI) pattern, but evidence is lacking. We examined this association prospectively and analyzed factors related to occurrence of seizures and WMI pattern in neonates with rotavirus infection. METHODS: We prospectively included 228 neonates (≥34 gestational weeks) who were admitted to a regional neonatal intensive care unit between February 2015 and April 2016 and underwent rotavirus antigen testing using stool samples. Patients with neonatal seizures of other etiologies were excl

Rotavirus infection of human cholangiocytes parallels the murine model of biliary atresia.

INTRODUCTION: Biliary atresia (BA) is the leading indication for liver transplantation in the pediatric population. The murine model of BA supports a viral etiology, because infection of neonatal mice with rhesus rotavirus (RRV) results in biliary obstruction. Viral infection targets the biliary epithelium and development of the model is viral strain dependent. No study has yet determined whether human cholangiocytes are also susceptible to rotaviral infection. We established an in vitro human model using an immortalized human cholangiocyte cell line and primary human cholangiocytes obtained f

Rotavirus infection increases the risk of bacteremia in children with nontyphoid Salmonella gastroenteritis.

To evaluate whether there is any impact of rotavirus infection on nontyphoid Salmonella (NTS) gastroenteritis, a total of 207 diarrheal children who had positive stool culture for NTS and also a stool examination for the rotavirus antigen were retrospectively analyzed. According to the positivity of the stool rotavirus antigen, patients were divided into two groups and compared with regard to demographic data, clinical features, laboratory findings, and complications. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the two groups of patients with regard to demographic dat

[Severe diarrhea due to rotavirus infection in a Belgian hospital 1981-2002].

Rotavirus infections are a major cause of severe diarrhea in children younger than 2 years. In Belgium they cause many hospitalizations because of dehydration. A study of the laboratory diagnosis of rotavirus infections in 28.251 stool samples at a university teaching hospital in Belgium during a twenty-year period (1981-2002) showed a marked seasonality. The virus was most often diagnosed during the winter months: 54% of the rotavirus isolates were found in the first three months of the year, with 21% of the positive samples occurring in February. Recently, rotaviruses can be genotyped based

Pathogenesis of rotavirus infection in various age groups of chickens and turkeys: pathology.

Various age groups of turkeys, White Leghorn chickens, and broiler chickens were inoculated with turkey rotavirus strain Tu-2 or with chicken rotavirus Ch-2, and the development of rotavirus-induced lesions were evaluated macroscopically and microscopically (light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy). Morphometric evaluations were conducted to determine morphologic changes in the villi of infected turkeys. Macroscopic lesions that were found in turkeys, but not in chickens, consisted of pallor of the intestinal tract and distension of the cecum with frothy or nonfrothy fluid contents.

Intestinal changes associated with rotavirus and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection in calves.

Newborn calves inoculated with rotavirus, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) serotype 020:K' x 106':K99:HNM, either alone or in combination, became depressed, anorectic, diarrhoeic and dehydrated. ETEC did not adhere to the intestine although there was extensive proliferation in the lumen. Only slight mucosal changes were induced by ETEC and the activity of membrane bound lactase remained normal. More severe mucosal damage and a decrease in lactase activity were found in newborn calves inoculated with either rotavirus or rotavirus and ETEC in combination. The most severe clinical illness
