The koranic schools are in poor socio-economical conditions in Dakar and skin diseases are common in these conditions. The goal of our descriptive study was to determine the prevalence of skin diseases occurring in these situations. One hundred five boys from four koranic schools of Dakar were examined. Eighty percent of the examined boys were with unless one skin disease. Tinea capitis (42.66%), scabiosis (13.33%), pyoderma (15.33%), plantar keratodermia (100%) were the skin diseases. In 34.52% these skin disease were associated and antecedents of skin infections diseases were reported in 89.

Attitudes of ninth grade students and their classroom teachers toward using condoms as a preventive measure against contracting AIDS were studied. One hundred and sixty six children attending educationally subnormal/mild (ESN/M) schools were karyotyped as part of a project investigating the aetiology of mild mental retardation. Nine had significant chromosome abnormalities. Five of six children identified during the survey had no dysmorphic features--47,XXY (two), 48,XXYY, 46,XX 15q-, and 46,XX,t(X;19). One dysmorphic boy had a balanced translocation--46,XY,t(3;15). Three were already known--47,XX+21 (two) and 46,XY, 14q+. We suggest that routine karyotyping of children with mild mental retardation be considered.

Responses of teachers and children in Northern Ireland and observations in other areas of the world beset by the daily threat of violence and death are reported. Respondents showed a deep concern about the role of schools in relation to children who have grown up with warfare in the streets. The concept of school-as-sanctuary is discussed in light of its effects on the processes of teaching, learning, and the emotional development of students.

Using rich survey data for England, we investigate whether providing parents with information about the weight status of their children reduces children's weight and improves health behaviors, or whether it has adverse effects.
