Two case reports of neurological disease in coal mine preparation plant workers.

Of 60 cases of neurotoxicity related to occupational exposures of workers at plants producing acrylamide monomers, cases involving neurotoxicity related to jobs using polymers with acrylamide monomer contamination have not been widely reported. In 1992, two patients were referred to the Division of Occupational and Environmental Health, Department of Family and Community Health, Marshall University School of Medicine, in Huntington, West Virginia for evaluation. The patients had worked in different coal preparation plants in southern West Virginia for over 10 years and had exposure to an acryl

Incidence of occupational rhinoconjunctivitis and risk factors in animal-health apprentices.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to laboratory animals often causes the appearance of immunologic sensitization and symptoms. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to determine the incidence of occupational rhinoconjunctivitis and the timing of symptoms and their determinants in apprentices starting exposure to laboratory animals. METHODS: Data from 387 (92.8%) of 417 students entering career programs in animal health in 5 schools were kept for analysis. Questionnaires and skin prick tests with common and occupational inhalants were carried out on entry and at follow-up visits scheduled at 8, 20, 32, and 44 months, de

Teachers' wellbeing and depressive symptoms, and associated risk factors: A large cross sectional study in English secondary schools.

BACKGROUND: Teachers have been shown to have high levels of stress and common mental disorder, but few studies have examined which factors within the school environment are associated with poor teacher mental health. METHODS: Teachers (n=555) in 8 schools completed self-report questionnaires. Levels of teacher wellbeing (Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale-WEMWBS) and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-PHQ-9) were measured and associations between these measures and school-related factors were examined using multilevel multivariable regression models. RESULTS: The mean (S

Fruit and Vegetable Consumption Among Adolescent Secondary School Students in Boukombe and Natitingou, North Benin.

Fruit and vegetables (F&V) are recommended for a healthy life. Adolescence is a critical period for the onset of eating disorders and future health. F&V consumption among adolescents is globally low, making this group a key target for diet/nutrition-related interventions. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess F&V consumption among secondary school students in the food-insecure communes of Boukombe (rural) and Natitingou (urban), Benin. Using probabilistic random sampling, 303 students completed F&V intake frequency questionnaires and 24-h dietary recalls on school and non-school days. Poi

Associations of childhood socioeconomic position and health with trajectories of grip strength from middle to older ages in populations from China and England.

BACKGROUND: We investigated associations of childhood socioeconomic position and health with trajectories of grip strength from middle to older ages in two distinct populations. METHODS: We used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, n = 16,701) and English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA, n = 12,695). Hand grip strength was measured at three timepoints in CHARLS (2011-2015) and four in ELSA (2001-2020). Random-effects growth models were applied to assess associations between each childhood factor and age trajectories of grip strength. FINDINGS: Lower parent

A scoping review to explore how universal design for learning is described and implemented by rehabilitation health professionals in school settings.

BACKGROUND: Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework that provides guidelines to support children with diverse needs in the classroom and promotes inclusion of all children. Although UDL is recognized as a promising approach for school-based rehabilitation health professionals (RHPs), there are no studies that synthesize evidence on the use of UDL by RHPs in the school setting. Therefore, the research question for this study is: How is UDL described and implemented in school settings by RHPs? This study specifically examined literature from occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and sp

The role of pathologists in the diagnosis of occupational lung diseases: an expert opinion of the European Society of Pathology Pulmonary Pathology Working Group.

Occupational lung/thoracic diseases are a major global public health issue. They comprise a diverse spectrum of health conditions with complex pathology, most of which arise following chronic heavy workplace exposures to various mineral dusts, metal fumes, or following inhaled organic particulate reactions. Many occupational lung diseases could become irreversible; thus accurate diagnosis is mandatory to minimize dust exposure and consequently reduce damage to the respiratory system. Lung biopsy is usually required when exposure history is inconsistent with imaging, in case of unusual or new e

Quantifying Prevalence Ratios for Asthma, Respiratory, and Systemic Symptoms Associated with Dampness and Mold Among School Staff: Interpretation of NIOSH DMAT Scores.

Indoor dampness and mold (D/M) are prevalent and represent a significant exposure linked to adverse health outcomes among building occupants. We analyzed 6,492 room D/M scores collected from 50 schools using the NIOSH D/M Assessment Tool (DMAT) to quantify the association between D/M exposure and health outcomes, including self-reported physician-diagnosed asthma, and respiratory and non-respiratory symptoms, among 1,529 school staff. Prevalence ratios and 90% confidence intervals were estimated via logistic regression with conditional standardization and the delta method. Generalized additive
