Experiences of Shared Decision Making for Cancer Screening Among Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Adults Participating in an ASL-Using Community Health Navigator Program: Preliminary Findings From a Nested Qualitative Study.

IntroductionDeaf, DeafBlind, and hard of hearing (DDBHH) adults using American Sign Language (ASL) face persistent disparities in cancer screening adherence, compounded by systemic communication barriers and documented deficits in shared decision making (SDM) with health care providers. Community health navigators (CHNs) who are fluent in ASL have been proposed as a strategy to bridge these gaps. This study explores 1) how ASL-using CHNs contributed or did not contribute to SDM for cancer screening among DDBHH adults who were nonadherent to screening recommendations and 2) identified factors i

Patient Perspectives on Clinician Support When Pursuing Permanent Contraception in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Given the history of coercion in the provision of sterilization, it is important that patients who desire permanent contraception receive patient-centered care that respects their preferences. Recent literature examining the provision of postpartum permanent contraception has not explored whether patients who desire permanent contraception feel supported by their clinical teams. METHODS: We interviewed patients from four medical centers around the United States with a documented desire for postpartum permanent contraception. We audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed interviews

A Review of Plant-Based Diets for Obesity Management.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is the most prevalent chronic disease in the United States with over 70% of the American population suffering from overweight/obesity. Recently, the popularity of plant-based diets (PBDs) has grown, with individuals adopting these diets for ethical, health and environmental reasons. Our aim is to evaluate the effect of a PBD on weight loss among patients who are overweight or obese. METHODS: A literature review of PBDs for the treatment of obesity was conducted using PubMed and Scopus. Our search yielded 27 intervention trials (3361 participants) and 6 metanalyses (9168 par

Efficient diagnosis and treatment follow-up of human brucellosis by a novel quantitative TaqMan real-time PCR assay: a human clinical survey.

Rapid and effective diagnosis of brucellosis is a challenge for clinicians. Even when diagnosis is on time and therapy is initiated, meticulous follow-up appointments are crucial for ensuring the efficacy of the treatment. Due to shortcomings of serological methods, molecular diagnosis, especially real-time PCR, is becoming a main approach in laboratory diagnostics. Thus, the development of efficient procedures and standardization of the PCR tests will have a great impact on the precise detection and quantification of bacterial DNA loads, which is valuable for the medical management of brucell

Intimate partner violence: patients' experiences and perceptions in family practice.

OBJECTIVE: To understand how women affected by intimate partner violence (IPV), felt their family physicians cared for them and to identify where gaps in care exist. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with ten women (mean age 50 years and minimum to maximum ages of 40-73 years). Content analysis was used to identify common themes. RESULTS: Women acknowledged a lack of insight into their abusive relationships given a lack of physical violence, preconceptions about IPV or presumed reasons their abusers had for violence. After identifying abuse, most shared feelings of fear, preventing them fro

Shared decision-making and the caregiver experience in tuberous sclerosis complex: results from a UK survey.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare genetic condition commonly accompanied by neurological and neuropsychological disorders, resulting in a high burden of illness for individuals and a substantial impact on their caregivers. Due to the diversity and complexity of clinical manifestations, patients with TSC need aligned multidisciplinary healthcare services starting in childhood through to adulthood. However, patients and caregivers are sometimes dissatisfied with the care provided, for which one of the most common reasons is a lack of involvement in clinical decision-making.

Prolonged abdominal pregnancy incidentally discovered during cesarean section: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pregnancy is a rare medical condition that is still missed in developing countries due to inadequate medical facilities. The clinical indicators manifest in various forms and are nonspecific, making it challenging to diagnose and often leading to delayed detection. However, obstetric ultrasound serves as an essential tool in early detection. Our objective was to share our experience dealing with this condition and emphasise the importance of early ultrasound diagnosis through efficient pregnancy monitoring in our regions. [Management of patients with EHEC/HUS. Lessons and perspectives from clinical infectious disease specialists].

The 2011 EHEC/HUS outbreak created uncertainty regarding the previous recommendations of withholding antibiotic therapy and regarding rational measures for prevention of invasive meningococcal disease after treatment with the monoclonal antibody eculizumab. For both these areas, an expert panel of the German Society for Infectious Diseases in cooperation with representatives of other learned societies and health institutions has drafted and consented guidelines that were published online on 1 June 2011 (i.e., ~10 days after the peak of the epidemic) and 4 June 2011. A summary of the guidelines

Considering Pregnancy: Duality in the Reproductive Journey and Decision-Making in Hispanic Women With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) commonly affects women during their childbearing years, making pregnancy experiences especially important to understand. This is particularly true for US Hispanic women, who face a higher SLE burden, more unplanned pregnancies, and frequent language or cultural discordance with clinicians. This study explores their perspectives, focusing on emotional dualities, logistical challenges, and views on unplanned pregnancies. METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews with 30 Hispanic women aged 18 to 45 with SLE, recruited from Los Angeles General

Description of Daily Living Skills and Independence: A Cohort from a Multidisciplinary Down Syndrome Clinic.

Levels of independence vary in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). We began this study to describe the current life skills in our clinic population of children and adults with DS. We collected and reviewed demographics, living situation, and life skills from an electronic intake form used in clinic procedures. Descriptive statistics for this cohort study included mean, standard deviation, and frequencies. From 2014-2020, 350 pediatric and 196 adult patients (range 0-62 years) with a first visit to the Massachusetts General Hospital Down Syndrome Program are described. Pediatric patients were

"I left my country and the people I love. It gave me hypertension": a qualitative study of social support and hypertension management in refugees.

BACKGROUND: Refugees experience a disproportionately high burden of hypertension, with war-related displacement disrupting their social networks. Countries from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are among the largest producers of refugees globally. While previous research has established the role of social support in improving chronic disease management, little is known about its impact among refugees from Arabic-speaking MENA countries. This study focuses on refugees diagnosed with hypertension from two Arabic-speaking MENA countries, Syria and Iraq, to investigate perceived social conn

Patient information sources when facing repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

OBJECTIVE: Shared medical decision making is most important when there are competing options for repair such as in treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). We sought to understand the sources of patients' pre-existing knowledge about AAA to better inform treating physicians about patients' needs for preoperative counseling. METHODS: We performed a multicenter survey of patients facing AAA repair at 20 Veterans Affairs hospitals across the United States as part of the Preferences for Open Versus Endovascular Repair of AAA study. [The value of in vitro diagnostic testing in the provision of medical care to patients with cardiovascular diseases.].

In vitro diagnostics are used at all stages of patient care. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of laboratory examination on clinical decision-making in providing medical care to patients with a cardiovascular profile. We also took into account the level of financing for the laboratory industry in the Russian Federation. We divided our study on three sequential steps: literature review, survey of clinicians and test-survey of clinicians. The share of costs for the laboratory tests in 2017 amounted to about 8% of the total funding for Russian health care. About 80% (70; 90) of the v

Resentful, Resigned and Respectful: Opioid Analgesics, Pain and Control, a Qualitative Study.

Opioid analgesic prescribing has increased significantly with associated concerns about dependence and overdose. This study aimed to explore non-cancer patients' experiences and views of taking opioid analgesics to manage their pain. Twenty-two patients were purposively sampled from English GP practices and participated in semi-structured telephone interviews. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis was used to generate emerging latent and semantic themes. Patients resented taking opioid analgesics due to tolerance and addiction fears but were resigned to experiencing chronic pain. Control emerge
