Myco-Facilitated Biosynthesis of Nano-Silver From Wasp Nest Fungus, Paecilomyces variotii, and Its Antimicrobial Activity Against MTCC Strains.

The utility of fungi as stabilizing and reducing agents in the biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles is striking due to the production of large quantities of biomolecules of minute toxic residuals. During the current study, sunlight- and dark-assessed silver nanoparticles were synthesized from wasp nest fungus, Paecilomyces variotii, at different pHs. Synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at 6 pH were found to be more prominent than at 7 and 8 pHs. AgNPs were within the 20- to 90-nm range and were polygonal and elongated in shape. FTIR spectra of light-mediated AgNPs showed diverse tra

Screening and Efficacy Evaluation of Deodorizing Microbes for Manure Waste in Cold Regions: A Case Study of Xinjiang, China.

Conventional deodorizing microbial agents exhibit poor cold tolerance. This study aimed to obtain functional strains capable of degrading ammonia and hydrogen sulfide by screening odor-polluted environments in multiple locations in Xinjiang, China. Deodorizing bacteria were isolated using selective media. Their deodorization efficiency was determined using the zinc ammonium complex salt colorimetric absorption method and the boric acid absorption Kjeldahl nitrogen determination method. The strains were identified through 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The obtained strains were then formulate

Enhanced microbial degradation mediated by pyrogenic carbon toward p-nitrophenol: Role of carbon structures and iron minerals.

Pyrogenic carbon (PC) including black carbons and engineered carbons can mediate the extracellular electron transfer to facilitate the biogeochemical reaction with organic pollutants. Yet, the role of carbon structures and iron minerals on PC-mediated microbial degradation is still lacking of understanding. Herein, we studied the electrochemical properties of PCs produced from varied feedstock with regards to the mediated degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 in anoxic system. Mediated degradation by PCs was enhanced by facilitating extracellular electron transfer

Structural analysis of a Simpl-like protein from Campylobacter jejuni.

Signaling molecule that interacts with mouse pelle-like kinase (Simpl) is an animal protein that contributes to the regulation of inflammatory responses. Although Simpl-like proteins (SLPs) are mainly found in bacteria, functional and structural studies on bacterial SLPs are limited to BP26, a periplasmic protein from Brucella species. We identified a group of bacterial SLPs, including Campylobacter jejuni SLP (cjSLP) and Shewanella putrefaciens SLP (spSLP), that exhibit significant sequence variation from Simpl and BP26. To address the structural and oligomeric diversities of SLPs, we determi

Semiconducting hematite facilitates microbial and abiotic reduction of chromium.

Semi-conducting Fe oxide minerals, such as hematite, are well known to influence the fate of contaminants and nutrients in many environmental settings through sorption and release of Fe(II) resulting from microbial or abiotic reduction. Studies of Fe oxide reduction by adsorbed Fe(II) have demonstrated that reduction of Fe(III) at one mineral surface can result in the release of Fe(II) on a different one. This process is termed "Fe(II) catalyzed recrystallization" and is believed to be the result of electron transfer through semi-conducting Fe (hydr)oxides. While it is well understood that Fe(

Role of ArsEFG in Roxarsone and Nitarsone Detoxification and Resistance.

Organoarsenical biotransformations are important components of the global cycling of arsenic. Roxarsone (3-nitro-4-hydroxybenzenearsenate or Rox(V)) and nitarsone (4-nitrobenzene arsenate or Nit(V)) are synthetic aromatic organoarsenicals used in the poultry industry as additives to prevent coccidiosis and improve feed efficiency. Here, we describe a novel pathway of resistance to roxarsone and nitarsone involving biotransformation of their trivalent forms (Rox(III)) and (Nit(III)) to the trivalent organoarsenicals HAPA(III) and pAsA(III), coupled to active extrusion of the aromatic aminobenez

Carbon Dots From Farmed Fish Blood as Novel Preservatives: Antioxidant, Antimicrobial Activities, and Shelf Life Extension of Refrigerated Slices From Asian Seabass Without and With Prior Bleeding.

Fish blood, an underutilized fish-processing byproduct, can serve as a sustainable precursor for multifunctional carbon dots (CDs). However, CDs synthesis from fish blood and the use of CDs for food preservation have not been explored. CDs were synthesized from different fractions of Asian seabass blood, including whole blood (WB-CDs), plasma (PB-CDs), and blood cells (CB-CDs). Physicochemical, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and preservative properties were evaluated. All synthesized CDs exhibited nanoscale dimensions, with good dispersion and distinct morphology. All CDs possessed UV-shielding c

Mechanisms of polystyrene microplastic degradation by the microbially driven Fenton reaction.

Natural hydroxyl radical (·OH) production, which partially occurs through the microbially driven Fenton reaction, can enhance the degradation of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs). However, ·OH causes damage to microorganisms, which might in turn restrain the microbially driven Fenton reaction. Thus, whether PS-MPs can be continuously degraded by the microbially driven Fenton reaction and how they are degraded are still unknown. A pure-culture system using Shewanella putrefaciens 200 was set up to explore the effect and mechanism of microbially driven Fenton reaction on PS-MP degradation. In a

Antibiotic resistance profiles of oral flora in hippopotami (Hippopotamus amphibius): implications for treatment of human bite wound infections.

BACKGROUND: The common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is found in aquatic environments throughout sub-Saharan Africa and is known to cause attacks on humans living or working close to water bodies. Victims surviving an attack often suffer from the consequences of severe wound infections caused by the animal's sharp canine teeth. OBJECTIVE: Isolation of normal flora bacteria from the oral cavity of common hippopotami (Hippopotamus amphibious) followed by antibiotic susceptibility testing to aid in the identification of a targeted antibiotic treatment regimen for hippopotamus attack vict

Combination of rosemary extract and buffered vinegar inhibits Pseudomonas and Shewanella growth in common carp (Cyprinus carpio).

BACKGROUND: Aquaculture is the fastest growing food-production sector, and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is one of the most cultivated fish species in the world. Due to its intrinsic characteristics, fish meat is highly susceptible to microbiological spoilage. Pseudomonas and Shewanella are the primary and secondary occurring microbiota during storage of fish meat, with significant contribution to spoilage with the formation of hydrolytic enzymes (lipases and proteases). RESULTS: With in vitro testing, we show that rosemary extract (Inolens4), buffered vinegar and their combination (SyneROX)

Identification of a plasmid-encoded gene from Haemophilus ducreyi which confers NAD independence.

Members of the family Pasteurellaceae are classified in part by whether or not they require an NAD supplement for growth on laboratory media. In this study, we demonstrate that this phenotype can be determined by a single gene, nadV, whose presence allows NAD-independent growth of Haemophilus influenzae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. This gene was cloned from a 5.2-kb plasmid which was previously shown to be responsible for NAD independence in Haemophilus ducreyi. When transformed into A. pleuropneumoniae, this cloned gene allowed NAD-independent growth on complex media and allowed the u

A multi-heme flavoenzyme as a solar conversion catalyst.

The enzyme flavocytochrome c3 (fcc3), which catalyzes hydrogenation across a C═C double bond (fumarate to succinate), is used to carry out the fuel-forming reaction in an artificial photosynthesis system. When immobilized on dye-sensitized TiO2 nanoparticles, fcc3 catalyzes visible-light-driven succinate production in aqueous suspension. Solar-to-chemical conversion using neutral water as the oxidant is achieved with a photoelectrochemical cell comprising an fcc3-modified indium tin oxide cathode linked to a cobalt phosphate-modified BiVO4 photoanode. The results reinforce new directions in th

Rapid Decomposition of Gallic Acid in Anaerobic Conditions Mediated by Bacteria-Iron Mineral Interactions.

It is widely held that polyphenols accumulate in soil due to limited phenol oxidase activity, thereby inhibiting resident microbes and promoting carbon stabilization. Contradicting this paradigm, we demonstrate that bioreduced Fe(II) from iron minerals may be enriched under anaerobic conditions, which accelerates phenol decomposition. Using gallic acid (GA) as a model, the biodegradation rate was 1.6-2.2 times higher under anaerobic conditions (k = 0.021-0.26 h-1) compared to aerobic environments in bacteria (Bacillus megaterium, Lactoccus Lactis, or Shewanella putrefaciens) cocultured with ir

Bioelectronic interface regulation of outer-membrane cytochrome-mediated extracellular electron transfer for rapid bioelectrochemical detection of biochemical oxygen demand.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) directly convert microbial metabolism into electrical signals, offering a self-powered platform for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) detection. However, sluggish electron transfer across the microbe-electrode interface remains a major barrier to rapid response. Here, Shewanella putrefaciens was employed as a model electroactive bacterium, and a three-dimensional hierarchical conductive scaffold comprising iron-cobalt sulfide nanoflowers supported on nickel foam was constructed. Polydopamine (PDA) and chitosan (CS) functional layers were separately introduced to coord

Pseudo-first-order reaction of chemically and biologically formed green rusts with HgII and C₁₅H₁₅N₃O₂: effects of pH and stabilizing agents (phosphate, silicate, polyacrylic acid, and bacterial cells).

The kinetics of Hg(II) and methyl red (MR) reduction by hydroxycarbonate green rust (GR1) and by hydroxysulfate green rust (GR2) were studied in the presence of naturally occurring organic and inorganic ligands (phosphate, polyacrylic acid, bacterial cells, silicate). The reducing ability of biogenic hydroxycarbonate green rust (GR1bio), obtained after microbial reduction of lepidocrocite by Shewanella putrefaciens, was also investigated and compared to those of chemically synthesized GR1 and GR2 (GR1ab and GR2ab). Complement factor I from flatfish half-smooth tongue (Cynoglossus semilaevis) exhibited anti-microbial activities.

Complement factor I (Cfi) is a soluble serine protease which plays a crucial role in the modulation of complement cascades. In the presence of substrate modulating cofactors (such as complement factor H, C4bp, CR1, etc), Cfi cleaves and inactivates C3b and C4b, thereby controlling the complement-mediated processes. In this study, we sequenced and characterized Cfi gene from Cynoglossus Semilaevis (designated as CsCfi) for the first time. The full-length cDNA of CsCfi was 2230 bp in length, including a 98 bp 5'-untranslated region (UTR), a 164 bp 3'-UTR and a 1968 bp open reading frame (ORF). I

Exploring the secondary mineral products generated by microbial iron respiration in Archean ocean simulations.

Marine chemical sedimentary deposits known as Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) archive Archean ocean chemistry and, potentially, signs of ancient microbial life. BIFs contain a diversity of iron- and silica-rich minerals in disequilibrium, and thus many interpretations of these phases suggest they formed secondarily during early diagenetic processes. One such hypothesis posits that the early diagenetic microbial respiration of primary iron(III) oxides in BIFs resulted in the formation of other iron phases, including the iron-rich silicates, carbonates, and magnetite common in BIF assemblages. Manganese promotes stability of natural arsenic sinks in a groundwater system with arsenic-immobilization minerals: Natural remediation mechanism and environmental implications.

Arsenic (As)-immobilizing iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) minerals (AFMM) represent potential As sinks in As-enriched groundwater environments. The process and mechanisms governing As bio-leaching from AFMM through interaction with reducing bacteria, however, remain poorly delineated. This study examined the transformation and release of As from AFMM with varying Mn/Fe molar ratios (0:1, 1:5, 1:3, and 1:1) in the presence of As(V)-reducing bacteria specifically Shewanella putrefaciens CN32. Notably, strain CN32 significantly facilitated the bio-reduction of As(V), Fe(III), and Mn(IV) in AFMM. In syst
