Dynamic radionuclide sialography (DRS) provides data about the aptitude of salivary glands to accumulate the tracer and to secrete the saliva. Visual interpretation of the t/a curves may be onerous when salivary glands uptake function is impaired. The purpose of the study has been to quantify the ascorbic acid (AA) response by means of salivary excretion index (SEI). DRS was performed in 10 healthy subjects and in 118 patients with various diseases of the parotid glands. Data acquisition (80 frames/15 s) started simultaneously with i.v. administration of 99mTcO4. Fifteen minutes later AA was g

OBJECTIVE: We describe sialography as a dynamic imaging modality useful in establishing the diagnosis and planning for treatment of a parotid gland ductal foreign body.
METHODS: Chart and radiographic imaging review of a 75 year-old male who had obstructive sialadenitis symptoms two years after welding slag pierced the cheek skin and identified as a 'piece of steel stuck in his cheek'.
RESULTS: Sialography was used to demonstrate a foreign body adjacent to the parotid gland to indicate its presence as a mobile element within the ductal system associated with marked pre-obstructive duct dilat

OBJECTIVE: To compare ultrasonography (US) of salivary glands with contrast sialography and scintigraphy, in order to evaluate the diagnostic value of this method in primary SS (pSS).
METHODS: The diagnostic value of parotid gland US was studied in 77 patients with pSS (male/female ratio 3/74; mean age 54 yrs) and in 79 with sicca symptoms but without SS. The two groups were matched for sex and age. Imaging findings of US were graded using an ultrasonographic score ranging from 0 to 16, which was obtained by the sum of the scores for each parotid and submandibular gland. The sialographic and

To date there is no agreement as to which imaging technique is best for the evaluation of the oral component of primary Sjögren's Syndrome (SS). The purpose of the present study has, therefore, been to determine the reliability of Magnetic Resonance (MR) in the evaluation of salivary alterations in patients with SS. The study involved 23 patients suffering from SS according to the European criteria. All the patients underwent ultrasonography and MR of the major salivary glands, parotid sialography and biopsy of the minor salivary glands. The first control group was made up of 50 healthy subjec

We report a case of congenital fistula from ectopic accessory parotid gland to the cheek demonstrated by CT sialography and CT fistulography. The right parotid gland was abnormally located lateral to masseter muscle. The fistula was arising from an ectopic accessory parotid gland with ectopic duct positioned anterior to masseter muscle. CT sialography and CT fistulography were very helpful in the diagnosis and surgical planning.

Cone-Beam Computed Tomography-Sialography (Sialo-CBCT) is used to demonstrate salivary ductal structure. This study aimed to conduct a volumetric analysis of the anatomical morphology of Normal-Appearing Glands (NAGs) in parotid sialo-CBCT. Our retrospective study included 14 parotid sialo-CBCT scans interpreted as NAGs in 11 patients with salivary gland impairment. The main duct length and width, as well as number and width of secondary and tertiary ducts were manually evaluated. We found that the main parotid duct showed an average width of 1.39 mm, 1.15 mm, and 0.98 mm, for the proximal, mi

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate MR sialography and SPECT/CT for parotid glands in Sjögren's syndrome patients.
METHODS: Thirty Sjögren's syndrome patients underwent MR sialography and SPECT/CT. The MR sialographic stagings of Sjögren's syndrome were determined by the criteria (stage 0: normal; stage 1: punctate appearance; stage 2: globular appearance; stage 3: cavitary appearance; stage 4: destructive appearance). The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of the right and left parotid glands with SPECT/CT was obtained using a workstation and software. MR sialographic

Ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) were studied as noninvasive methods to determine salivary gland involvement and compared with parotid sialography in patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and patients with only objective xerostomia and/or xerophthalmia. Patients with complaints of dry eyes and dry mouth but with no objective abnormalities served as controls. CT was not discriminative between the 2 groups. In contrast, US revealed decreased parotid gland echogenicity in most of the patients with SS, compared with only 1 patient in the group with sicca complaints only (p = 0.005
