Improved peaks automatic detection algorithm of noisy quasi-periodic physiological signals.

The automatic multiscale-based peak detection (AMPD) method for quasi-periodic signals suffers from high computational complexity, substantial memory requirements, and occasional peak detection failures. To address these limitations, this paper proposes an Improved AMPD (IAMPD) algorithm that significantly enhances computational speed while maintaining strong noise robustness. The improvement in efficiency is attained through a frequency-informed scale constraint that narrows the search space using prior knowledge of the signal's frequency range, greatly reducing redundant computations. GLSTNet: A Global-Local Spatial Relations and Temporal Dynamics Network for EEG-Based Emotion Recognition.

Electroencephalography (EEG)-based emotion recognition is an important biosensing technique for affective brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), mental-state assessment, and physiological monitoring. Existing methods often rely on a single spectral descriptor or regular two-dimensional brain maps, which makes it difficult to jointly model local spatial representations, global spatial relations, and temporal dynamics. This paper proposes GLSTNet, a global-local spatial relations and temporal dynamics network for EEG emotion recognition. EEG trials are divided into short windows, from which multi-ban

Transformer-based hybrid systems to combat BCI illiteracy.

This study addresses the challenge of enhancing Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), focusing on low Signal-to-Noise Ratios and "BCI illiteracy" often affecting up to 20% of users. Transformer-based models show promise but remain underexplored. Three experiments were conducted. Experiment A assessed the performance of architectures combining Convolutional and Transformer Blocks for binary Motor Imagery (MI) classification. Experiment B introduced a hybrid system, refining both block types and adding a Noise Focus Block to infuse Stochastic Noise, enhancing multi-class classification robustness. E

A dual branch feature extraction network for heart sound signal analysis.

The analysis of heart sound signals is critical in the early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. However, the complexity and diversity of these signals pose significant challenges for accurate recognition. In this paper, we propose a novel heart sound dual-branch feature extraction network (HSDFE-Net) to address these challenges. The model first extracts both conventional audio features and bi-spectrum features from preprocessed heart sound signals, enabling comprehensive characterization of their linear spectral and nonlinear properties. Unlike conventional single-branch networks, HSDFE-Net

HEMAsNet: A Hemisphere Asymmetry Network Inspired by the Brain for Depression Recognition From Electroencephalogram Signals.

Depression is a prevalent mental disorder that affects a significant portion of the global population. Despite recent advancements in EEG-based depression recognition models rooted in machine learning and deep learning approaches, many lack comprehensive consideration of depression's pathogenesis, leading to limited neuroscientific interpretability. To address these issues, we propose a hemisphere asymmetry network (HEMAsNet) inspired by the brain for depression recognition from EEG signals. HEMAsNet employs a combination of multi-scale Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Me

Neurophysiological Factors Affecting Muscle Innervation Zone Estimation Using Surface EMG: A Simulation Study.

Surface electromyography (EMG) recorded by a linear or 2-dimensional electrode array can be used to estimate the location of muscle innervation zones (IZ). There are various neurophysiological factors that may influence surface EMG and thus potentially compromise muscle IZ estimation. The objective of this study was to evaluate how surface-EMG-based IZ estimation might be affected by different factors, including varying degrees of motor unit (MU) synchronization in the case of single or double IZs. The study was performed by implementing a model simulating surface EMG activity. Three different

Quantile graphs for EEG-based diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Known as a degenerative and progressive dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects about 25 million elderly people around the world. This illness results in a decrease in the productivity of people and places limits on their daily lives. Electroencephalography (EEG), in which the electrical brain activity is recorded in the form of time series and analyzed using signal processing techniques, is a well-known neurophysiological AD biomarker. EEG is noninvasive, low-cost, has a high temporal resolution, and provides valuable information about brain dynamics in AD. Here, we present an original app

A Wavelet Transform-Based Neural Network Denoising Algorithm for Mobile Phonocardiography.

Cardiovascular pathologies cause 23.5% of human deaths, worldwide. An auto-diagnostic system monitoring heart activity, which can identify the early symptoms of cardiac illnesses, might reduce the death rate caused by these problems. Phonocardiography (PCG) is one of the possible techniques able to detect heart problems. Nevertheless, acoustic signal enhancement is required since it is exposed to various disturbances coming from different sources. The most common denoising enhancement is based on the Wavelet Transform (WT). However, the WT is highly susceptible to variations in the noise frequ

Computer-assisted EEG diagnostic review for idiopathic generalized epilepsy.

Epilepsy diagnosis can be costly, time-consuming, and not uncommonly inaccurate. The reference standard diagnostic monitoring is continuous video-electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring, ideally capturing all events or concordant interictal discharges. Automating EEG data review would save time and resources, thus enabling more people to receive reference standard monitoring and also potentially heralding a more quantitative approach to therapeutic outcomes. There is substantial research into the automated detection of seizures and epileptic activity from EEG. However, automated detection soft

Evaluation of k-Space Acquisition Strategies in Nonuniform B0 (NuBo) MRI.

PURPOSE: To evaluate k-space acquisition strategies for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a nonuniform B0 (NuBo) field-cycling system, focusing on image quality, scan-time efficiency, robustness to B0 inhomogeneity, and RF coil bandwidth constraints. METHODS: Three acquisition strategies were compared: single-shot turbo spin echo (SS-TSE), multi-echo spin echo (MESE) with repeated phase encoding, and spin echo single-point imaging (SE-SPI) without applied readout (RO) gradients. Experiments were performed on an open, low-field, field-cycling MRI system using a nonuniform electromagnet. Imag

Extraction of acne lesion in acne patients from multispectral images.

In acne treatment, it is important to accurately evaluate the severity of Acne. The acne should be classified into several skin lesions including comedo, reddish papule, pustule, and scar. However, in some cases, a visual detection from RGB image maybe difficult for the proper evaluation of acne skin lesions. This paper proposes an extraction method using the spectral information of the various type of acne skin lesions calculated from the multispectral images (MSI) of the lesions. In the experiment, we showed the possibility of classifying acne lesion types by applying a combination of severa

Temporal-Framing Adaptive Network for Heart Sound Segmentation Without Prior Knowledge of State Duration.

OBJECTIVE: This paper presents a novel heart sound segmentation algorithm based on Temporal-Framing Adaptive Network (TFAN), including state transition loss and dynamic inference. METHODS: In contrast to previous state-of-the-art approaches, TFAN does not require any prior knowledge of the state duration of heart sounds and is therefore likely to generalize to non sinus rhythm. TFAN was trained on 50 recordings randomly chosen from Training set A of the 2016 PhysioNet/Computer in Cardiology Challenge and tested on the other 12 independent databases (2,099 recordings and 52,180 beats). Collecting, storing and transmitting heart sounds.

We have developed a system whereby heart sounds and accompanying electrocardiogram may be recorded in digital format, stored as files and transmitted as any other digital file. The present system is implemented on a Macintosh System 7.1 platform, but will run under System 7.0 to System 7.5. The code is written in object oriented C++. The data are presently taken using a standard heart sound microphone and ECG amplifier. The data collection program stores the sampled channels as 16 bit words. Each channel is sampled at 2 kb/s for periods of time ranging from 10 to 30 seconds. Our program then r

Anti-aliasing-enhanced WaveUNet for clinically reliable 12-lead ECG reconstruction from limited 3-lead input.

Standard 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) remains the clinical gold standard for diagnosing cardiac disorders, particularly myocardial infarction (MI). However, electrode-count constraints in portable and wearable ECG systems make simultaneous acquisition of all 12 leads impractical, thereby challenging the preservation of diagnostic fidelity. This study aims to reconstruct physiologically coherent and clinically meaningful 12-lead ECGs from a limited 3-lead input configuration. To this end, we developed a WaveUNet-based encoder-decoder architecture and systematically extended it with alterna

An improved ICEEMDAN-depth hybrid network model integrating multimodal data for the screening of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Early non-invasive approaches for detecting diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) are crucial to preventing its severe complications. However, these approaches have been limited by insufficient dynamic feature capture, low model efficiency, and poor portability. To improve the non-invasive detection capability for DPN, a novel combined method based on the fusion of PPG and ECG signals is proposed. Firstly, an adaptive denoising method integrating ICEEMDAN-based signal decomposition, wavelet thresholding, and particle swarm optimization is adopted to improve signal quality. Secondly, a combined

Online heart sound segmentation as temporal tracking: a closed-loop prediction-detection-update framework.

Accurate segmentation of phonocardiogram (PCG) recordings into the first and second heart sounds (S1 and S2) is essential for computer-aided auscultation, but remains challenging because cardiac-cycle timing, event duration, and waveform morphology vary across and within subjects. We formulate heart sound segmentation as a one-dimensional temporal tracking problem and propose an online closed-loop prediction-detection-update framework. S1 and S2 are tracked independently using a state vector that contains a reference-point location and left and right temporal extents. A Kalman filter predicts

I-GraphECG: Observability-Based Lead Selection and Interpretable Disease Prediction from the 12-Lead ECG Using a Gray-Box Graph Electrophysiology Surrogate.

Wearable ECG increasingly records fewer than the standard 12 leads, so a model must be accurate, interpretable, and explicit about the information lost under lead reduction. I-GraphECG is a gray-box graph electrophysiology surrogate: an encoder maps a 12-lead median beat to a bounded vector of 47 equivalent electrophysiological descriptors, a constrained eight-node conduction-graph decoder reconstructs the signal, and disease prediction uses the descriptors rather than the waveform. On a clean PTB-XL four-class subset, median beats are reconstructed at median correlation 0.91, and macro-AUROC
