Punishing and toxic neighborhood environments independently predict the intergenerational social mobility of black and white children.

We use data on intergenerational social mobility by neighborhood to examine how social and physical environments beyond concentrated poverty predict children's long-term well-being. First, we examine neighborhoods that are harsh on children's development: those characterized by high levels of violence, incarceration, and lead exposure. Second, we examine potential supportive or offsetting mechanisms that promote children's development, such as informal social control, cohesion among neighbors, and organizational participation. Census tract mobility estimates from linked income tax and Census r

A cross-sectional analysis of the association between perceived network social control and telomere length.

OBJECTIVE: Social control in the health domain refers to attempts by social network members to get an individual to modify their health behaviors. According to the dual effects model of social control, having one's health behavior controlled by others should be related to healthier behavioral change, but might arouse psychological distress as one may resent being controlled. Despite potential healthy behavior change, the stress of social control may thus be detrimental as interpersonal stress has been related to negative health outcomes. In the present study, the association between perceived

Informal social support and older persons' psychological well-being in Hong Kong.

This paper focuses on the importance and the effectiveness of various types of informal support for older persons' psychological well-being. It examines the effects of objective measures of informal support (such as size of social networks and frequency of contact) and subjective measures (such as satisfaction with the support received) on psychological well-being of older occupants in different household circumstances (i.e.,living alone, with spouse or relatives, in old urban areas or new towns, in private or public housing). Data were collected from face-to-face interviews with a sample of 5

A person-centered and genetically informed approach toward characterizing multidomain resilience to neighborhood disadvantage in youth.

BACKGROUND: Examining resilience to adversity across multiple behavioral domains (e.g., psychological well-being, social functioning) can better characterize positive development and inform novel prevention and intervention efforts. However, few studies have employed person-centered methods to examine individual profiles of resilience across multiple domains in youth. Further, research exploring contextual predictors of resilience has rarely used genetically informed designs, which are critical for eliminating potential confounds. METHODS: The current study employed latent profile analysis (L

Individual differences in the development of self-regulation during pre-adolescence: connections to context and adjustment.

Difficulties with self-regulation are implicated in the development of emotional and behavioral problems during adolescence. Although children's ability to regulate their behaviors continues to improve throughout childhood and adolescence, it remains unclear how contextual risk factors might influence this development during the transition to adolescence, or how variation in the development of self-regulation predicts adjustment. Using a community sample of 214 8-12 year-olds (T1 M = 9.5, SD = 1.01), we examined growth trajectories of effortful control and impulsivity over three years and test

Most of our social scientists are not institution based... they are there for hire--research consultancies and social science capacity for health research in East Africa.

There is a serious shortage of senior African social scientists to lead health-related research in Africa. This is despite the existence of many African social science graduates, and decades of Northern funded research programmes intended to develop local capacity. To investigate the barriers to developing health social science research capacity in East Africa, 29 in-depth interviews, informal conversations and a group discussion were conducted with professionals in this field. Respondents' explanations for inadequate social science research capacity primarily related to under-development and

The role of emotion regulation in the treatment of child anxiety disorders.

In this review, we examine the role of emotion regulation in the treatment of children with anxiety disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to "work" for children with anxiety disorders and it has been categorized as an evidence-based treatment. However, most studies have shown that the treatment is effective for about 60-70% of children, leaving the remaining children symptomatic and oftentimes with persisting psychological disorders. Of importance, it has also been shown that many children with anxiety disorders demonstrate poor emotion regulation skills. Despite these f

Cognitive regulation of negative affect in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) exhibit common cognitive deficits that may impede the capacity for self-regulating affect. We examined the use of particular cognitive strategies for regulating negative affect in SZ and BD, and their associations with levels of mood symptomatology. Participants were 126 SZ, 97 BD, and 81 healthy controls (HC) who completed the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) and the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS). Patients with SZ and BD reported more frequent rumination, catastrophising and self-bla

Household income modifies the association between social capital and gestational diabetes mellitus in Japan: Results from TMM BirThree Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: While social capital can prevent diabetes, these benefits can be heterogeneous with respect to socioeconomic status. We investigated the association between social capital and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) while examining effect modification by household income. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis using the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study carried out between July 2013 and March 2017. Social capital (mutual aid, social trust, informal social control, collective action) and covariates were self-reported, while

Genetic Risk, Neighborhood Characteristics, and Behavioral Difficulties Among African American Adolescents Living in Very Low-Income Neighborhoods.

Behavioral difficulties among African American youth are disproportionately detrimental to their future well-being compared to when demonstrated by White American youth. The majority of gene-environment studies of behavior have been conducted with European ancestry samples, limiting our knowledge of these processes among African Americans. This study examined the influence of positive and negative neighborhood conditions, in the context of genetic risk, on behavioral difficulties among low-income African American adolescents. Data were from the Genes, Environment, and Neighborhood Initiative s

Leptospirosis in the Philippines: Confronting the Structural Roots of a Recurring Threat.

Leptospirosis remains a pressing yet under-recognized public health burden in the Philippines with an alarming 43.45% rise in cases in early 2025. Outbreaks closely follow flooding, disproportionately affecting impoverished communities in informal, flood-prone settlements where poor sanitation, unsafe housing, and limited healthcare access compound vulnerability. Current responses remain largely hospital-based and reactive, straining resources during seasonal surges while leaving structural drivers unaddressed. This article calls for a shift to multisectoral, preventive strategies that reduce

Interacting effects of receiving social control and social support during smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Social control and support have effects on smoking cessation, but are mostly examined separately. PURPOSE: Interacting effects of social control and support are investigated, hypothesizing synergistic effects. METHODS: In 99 smokers, received social control and emotional support (both smoking specific) were assessed 2 weeks before a quit date (T1); objectively verified abstinence and self-reported numbers of cigarettes smoked daily were assessed 6 weeks after baseline (T2). RESULTS: For both outcomes, associations with control (T1) were moderated by support (T1), but beneficial

An online mindfulness intervention targeting socioemotional regulation in fibromyalgia: results of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with fibromyalgia (FM) experience pain as well as deficits in positive affect and social relations that are not explicitly addressed in most behavioral treatments. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of a 12-module online intervention targeting socioemotional regulation via mindful awareness/acceptance (MSER) with those of an attention-control treatment, healthy lifestyle tips (HT). METHODS: Seventy-nine FM patients were randomly assigned to MSER or HT, with outcomes assessed via online diary reports of pain, coping efficacy, affect, and social r

Cultural Practices Shaping Zoonotic Diseases Surveillance: The Case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and Thailand Native Chicken Farmers.

Effectiveness of current passive zoonotic disease surveillance systems is limited by the under-reporting of disease outbreaks in the domestic animal population. Evaluating the acceptability of passive surveillance and its economic, social and cultural determinants appears a critical step for improving it. A participatory rural appraisal was implemented in a rural subdistrict of Thailand. Focus group interviews were used to identify sanitary risks perceived by native chicken farmers and describe the structure of their value chain. Qualitative individual interviews with a large diversity of acto

[Naawtal or the psychopathological aspects of a particular migration].

This study deals with some psycopathological features of naawtal. Naawtal is a Wolof word designating a social practice based on black magic that consists in ostracizing someone to prevent him from competing for a common goal or approaching a loved one. This traditional practice leads to involuntary migration from one place to another in the country. The survival of this practice in the socio-economic context of modern Senegal and indeed its extension to social classes not previously involved, reflects individual suffering, collective malaise, and ongoing social adjustments. Analysis of the pr

A note on whether spousal caregivers try to control their environment or themselves.

In this study, a two-process model of control (Rothbaum, Weisz, & Snyder, 1982) was used to investigate spousal caregivers' control in stressful situations. According to Rothbaum et al., primary control occurs when individuals retain control by changing their environment (other people, objects, or events), whereas secondary control occurs when individuals retain control by changing their own cognitions or emotions to adapt to the environment. In an exploration of whether caregivers would use primary or secondary control in caring for a spouse with dementia, 32 caregivers described a stressful

Polisye Kont Moustik: A Culturally Competent Approach to Larval Source Reduction in the Context of Lymphatic Filariasis and Malaria Elimination in Haiti.

Community engagement has become an increasingly important focus of global health programs. Arbovirus emergence in the Americas (Zika and chikungunya virues), and global goals for malaria and lymphatic filariasis elimination, mean that community-based mosquito control has taken on a new salience. But how should mosquito control initiatives be designed and implemented in ways that best engage local people? What are the challenges and trade-offs of different strategies, not only for effectiveness but also for scale-up? In this paper, we describe the social and political dynamics of a pilot study

Dying from heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the symptoms experienced in the last year of life by people with heart disease, their relation to quality of life, and informal carers' satisfaction with hospital services. METHODS: Interview survey of informal carers of 600 patients aged 15 and over, approximately ten months after their death from heart disease in 1990 in 20 English health districts. The districts, while self-selected, were nationally representative in social characteristics and indicators of health service provision and use. RESULTS: Pain, dyspnoea and low mood were reported to have been experienced
