The Role of Social-Emotional and Social Network Factors in the Relationship Between Academic Achievement and Risky Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: We examined whether standardized test scores and grades are related to risky behaviors among low-income minority adolescents and whether social networks and social-emotional factors explained those relationships. METHODS: We analyzed data from 929 high school students exposed by natural experiment to high- or low-performing academic environments in Los Angeles. We collected information on grade point average (GPA), substance use, sexual behaviors, participation in fights, and carrying a weapon from face-to-face interviews and obtained California math and English standardized test

E-cigarette use and susceptibility among Indonesian youth: the role of social environment, social media, and individual factors.

BACKGROUND: Youth behavior is significantly influenced by their social environment and social media (SM). Susceptibility to e-cigarette use, defined as the likelihood of initiating e-cigarette use among non-users, is a critical early marker for prevention efforts. This study explores the interplay of social environment, SM marketing exposure, and individual traits in e-cigarette use and susceptibility among Indonesian youth, addressing a gap in non-Western contexts. METHODS: A school-based online survey of 1,600 Indonesian youth aged 15-24, conducted from March to August 2023 in Jakarta, Yogy

An overview of psychological and social factors in Charles Bonnet syndrome.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition where cognitively normal individuals with sight impairment experience simple and/or complex visual hallucinations. The exact pathogenesis of CBS is unknown; however, deafferentation is often recognised as a causal mechanism. Studies have provided insight into the multifaceted impact of CBS on wellbeing. Onset of CBS may cause distress among those believing visual hallucinations are indicative of a neurological condition. Hallucinatory content is often congruent with the emotional response. For example, hallucinations of a macabre nature typically re

Considering the context: social factors in responses to drugs in humans.

BACKGROUND: Drugs are typically used in social settings. Here, we consider two factors that may contribute to this observation: (i) the presence of other people may enhance the positive mood effects of a drug, and conversely, (ii) drugs may enhance the value of social stimuli. METHODS: We review evidence from controlled laboratory studies with human volunteers, which investigated either of these interactions between social factors and responses to drugs. We examine the bidirectional effects of social stimuli and single doses of alcohol, stimulants, opioids, and cannabis. RESULTS: All four cl

Social and environmental risk factors in the emergence of infectious diseases.

Fifty years ago, the age-old scourge of infectious disease was receding in the developed world in response to improved public health measures, while the advent of antibiotics, better vaccines, insecticides and improved surveillance held the promise of eradicating residual problems. By the late twentieth century, however, an increase in the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases was evident in many parts of the world. This upturn looms as the fourth major transition in human-microbe relationships since the advent of agriculture around 10,000 years ago. About 30 new diseases have been

The prevalence of nausea in the community: psychological, social and somatic factors.

Nausea is a commonly reported symptom with a point prevalence of about 12% in the community. Nausea is a prominent symptom in functional gastrointestinal disorders and patients with anxiety and depression frequently present gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and abdominal discomfort as their main problem when they consult a doctor. Functional gastrointestinal disorders are strongly related to anxiety and depressive disorders with a lifetime prevalence of 80--90% in samples from clinics of gastroenterology. This study examines the relationship between anxiety disorders, depressions and na

Social and economic factors and the control of lymphatic filariasis: a review.

Formal control programmes do not exist for lymphatic filariasis in much of the endemic world. The literature on the social, economic and clinical impacts of the disease is so sparse as to provide virtually no guidance on whether the disease should be accorded more importance in national or local public health programmes. This type of research is a major priority. Putting together what little is known about the socioeconomic determinants of filariasis with the fairly extensive experience in control leads to a finding that control programmes must be undertaken at the community level to be effect

Effects of feeding and social factors on diarrhoea and vomiting in infants.

In a prospective study of infants and their feeding in south east Queensland, Australia, the incidences of reported diarrhoea and/or vomiting in breast, bottle, and mixed (breast and bottle) fed infants were compared from birth to 1 year. Up to 6 months infants who were given breast feeds, with or without other milks, had less diarrhoea and/or vomiting than those given bottle feeds only. Breast feeding seemed to protect the infant against possible introduced infections even when other milks were given along with the breast milk. After 6 months breast feeding did not reduce the incidence of gas

Social and familial factors in the development of early childhood asthma.

The role of social and familial factors in the development of childhood asthma by age 6 years was studied in a birth cohort of New Zealand children. Rates of asthma varied markedly with the child's sex; boys had twice the rate of asthma as girls. In addition, the factors associated with asthma varied with the child's sex. For boys, wheeze during infancy, early eczema, and parental asthma were all significant risk factors; for girls, the only risk factor was early eczema. Proportional hazards modeling of the data failed to show any significant associations between the development of asthma and

Combined Effects of Social and Behavioral Factors on Stress and Depression.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress, driven by the persistent activation of the body's stress response system-including the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis-has far-reaching effects on both physical and mental health. This study examines the combined effects of social and behavioral factors on a latent variable consisting of stress and depressive symptoms, using a comprehensive framework to explore the complex interactions of these factors. METHODS: Leveraging data from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) National Health and Nu

The impact of social factors on outcomes in patients with bleeding disorders.

AIM: To assess the impact of social status and disease-related impairment of certain aspects of the patient's life on clinical and psychosocial outcomes in patients with inherited bleeding disorders (PWBD). An exploration of social support as a factor in the return-to-work process.

Despite evidence that inter-personal relationships are important in human resource management, little is understood about the nature of workplace social support in a disability context, or what features of support are important to the success of return-to-work programs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore workplace disability support from worker and supervisory perspectives and to identify salient features for work re-entry. A total of 8 supervisors and 18 previously injured workers from a range of work units in a Canadian municipality were interviewed, and their views concern
