Modified ride-on car for mobility and socialization: single-case study of an infant with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Before the onset of walking, children with Down syndrome experience limited mobility yet are never considered candidates for traditional powered mobility devices. The purpose of this single-case study is to quantify the feasibility and family perceptions of including modified ride-on car use as an option for increasing daily mobility, socialization, and fun for a child with Down syndrome. METHODS: A 13-month-old child, Natalie, and her family were video recorded during the 28-week study using her ride-on car in their home and community. RESULTS: Natalie demonstrated and her family r

Developmental Alterations in Cortical Organization and Socialization in Adolescents Who Sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury in Early Childhood.

This study investigated patterns of cortical organization in adolescents who had sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during early childhood to determine ways in which early head injury may alter typical brain development. Increased gyrification in other patient populations is associated with polymicrogyria and aberrant development, but this has not been investigated in TBI. Seventeen adolescents (mean age = 14.1 ± 2.4) who sustained a TBI between 1-8 years of age, and 17 demographically-matched typically developing children (TDC) underwent a high-resolution, T1-weighted 3-Tesla magnetic r

Contribution of Theory of Mind, Executive Functioning, and Pragmatics to Socialization Behaviors of Children with High-Functioning Autism.

Social difficulties are a key aspect of autism, but the intervening factors are still poorly understood. This study had two objectives: to compare the profile of ToM skills, executive functioning (EF), and pragmatic competence (PC) of children with high-functioning autism (HFA) and children with typical development (TD), and analyze their mediator role in social functioning. The participants were 52 children with HFA and 37 children with TD matched on age, intelligence quotient, and expressive vocabulary. Significant differences were found on measures of ToM, both explicit and applied, EF, and

How digital literacy buffers stress and boosts retention in nurses: The moderated mediating role of proactive socialization behavior.

OBJECTIVE: To test a moderated mediation model examining how interpersonal management stress (IMS) is associated with nurses' intention to stay (NIS), focusing on the mediating role of proactive socialization behavior (PSB) and the moderating role of digital communication-collaboration literacy (DCCL). METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 305 registered nurses recruited from 12 hospitals in Western China via WeChat-based snowball sampling. Validated instruments measured IMS, PSB, DCCL, and NIS. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analyses were performed using

Professional socialization as a complex adaptive process: a systematic scoping review and integrative theory of professional identity formation.

BACKGROUND: Professional socialization is central to professional identity formation (PIF), shaping how physicians think, act, and feel within their roles. Despite sustained scholarly attention and curricular innovation, there remains limited understanding of how professional socialization actually operates, or why individuals exposed to similar training environments develop markedly different professional identities. METHODS: To examine this, we conducted a systematic scoping review using an AI-supplemented modified Systematic Evidence-Based Approach (mSEBA) to examine current theories of pr

The moderating role of gender and acculturative status in the socialization of cultural values in U.S. Mexican families.

OBJECTIVES: Familismo and respeto are traditional Latine values often taught to U.S. Latine children by their caregivers. Deference to authority figures and restraint from defiance to such figures are also taught. Despite the central role of these as markers of Latine ethnic identity and their relevance to children's health and well-being, little is known on how these traditional cultural values are socialized and whether differences exist in these values between English-speaking and Spanish-speaking U.S. Latine mothers and between boys and girls. We examined expressions of familismo, respeto,

Effect of Wearable Digital Intervention for Improving Socialization in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Autism behavioral therapy is effective but expensive and difficult to access. While mobile technology-based therapy can alleviate wait-lists and scale for increasing demand, few clinical trials exist to support its use for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) care. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of Superpower Glass, an artificial intelligence-driven wearable behavioral intervention for improving social outcomes of children with ASD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized clinical trial in which participants received the Superpower Glass intervention plus standard of care

Longitudinal relations among Mexican-origin mothers' cultural characteristics, cultural socialization, and 5-year-old children's ethnic-racial identification.

The current longitudinal study examined the intergenerational transmission of ethnic-racial identity/identification and cultural orientation among Mexican-origin adolescent young mothers and their children (N = 161 dyads). Findings indicated that mothers' ethnic-racial identity and their cultural involvement were significantly associated with children's ethnic-racial identification via mothers' cultural socialization; however, associations varied significantly by children's gender and skin tone. For example, mothers' ethnic-racial centrality was positively associated with cultural socializatio

Differential change in alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic: the role of loneliness, socialization, and mental well-being.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in mental health issues and psychological distress, disruption to work/studying conditions, and social isolation particularly among young adults. Changes in these factors are differentially associated with alcohol use. Moreover, the relationship between these factors are bidirectional and may have fluctuated throughout the different phases of the pandemic. However, studies focusing on young adults had conflicting results, short follow-up periods, and lacked comprehensive data to describe underlying mechanisms. METHODS: 1067 young adults parti

The role of maternal child maltreatment history and unsupportive emotion socialization in the intergenerational transmission of emotion regulation difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health problems and poor parenting are thought to account for the intergenerational transmission of poor outcomes to offspring of mothers who have experienced child maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: Given that emotion regulation (ER) difficulties have been linked to adult psychopathology and maladaptive parenting, the goal of the present study was to examine the mechanisms through which a maternal history of child maltreatment, and subsequent difficulties with ER, might contribute to unsupportive emotion socialization and the intergenerational transmission of ER difficultie

Changes in Motivation, Socialization, Wellness and Mental Health in Youth Long-Distance Runners During COVID-19 Social Distancing Restrictions.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the sporting and exercise activities of millions of youth. Running is an activity that could be maintained while social distancing restrictions were implemented during the pandemic. However, a recent study has indicated that youth runners reported lower running distance, frequency, and intensity during COVID-19. The reason for this reduction and the impact on overall well-being is unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if the social distancing restrictions during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic influenced running motives, socialization

The Association Between Genetic Predisposition and Parental Socialization: An Examination of Gene-Environment Correlations Using an Adoption-Based Design.

An extensive body of research has examined the role that genetic influences play in the development of antisocial behavior. Even so, there remains much that is unknown regarding the intersections among antisocial behavior, environments, and genetic influences. The current study is designed to shed some light on this issue by examining whether gene-environment correlations are present in the lives of adopted adolescents. More specifically, this article seeks to contribute to scholarship efforts aimed at understanding whether biological parents' antisocial behavioral phenotypes-behaviors often a

The Impact of Exercise, Cognitive Activities, and Socialization on Cognitive Function: Results From the National Long-Term Care Survey.

Currently, there are no effective treatments for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders and age continues to be a robust risk factor. Thus, population aging in the United States may have catastrophic results if interventions are not found and implemented. This study examines possible associations between cognitive impairment and exercise, cognitive activities, and socialization. Cognitive activities, socialization, and exercise were assessed at baseline, and cognitive function was measured at baseline, 5-year, and 10-year follow-up. Controlling for baseline cognitive function, age, sex, edu

[Social psychiatry as a social science].

Social Psychiatry mostly is perceived as social epidemiology. But other branches of sociology and social psychology have influenced its history as well, e.g. family sociology and the sociology of institutions. Recently, research in family milieu and social environment has gained some importance. It is demonstrated how research in social psychiatry follows developments in other social sciences.

"We can make an impact": A mixed method examination of Asian American parents' and adolescents' bidirectional racial-civic socialization.

Little is known about Asian American family processes that support adolescents' civic engagement, especially in the context of anti-Asian racism. This convergent mixed-method explanatory study examined bidirectional racial-civic socialization (RCS) between Asian American parent-adolescent dyads around racial discrimination and how RCS relates to adolescents' civic engagement. Using observations of 78 Asian American parent-adolescent dyads discussing anti-Asian hate, exploratory qualitative analyses identified how critical consciousness is intertwined in bidirectional RCS. In surveys with 449 d

Maternal emotion socialization and emotional functioning among Black adolescents: the role of perceptions of mother as a secure base.

Black youth face racial inequities in their communities that translate to more severe consequences for their displays of negative emotions than their White counterparts. Researchers propose that a balanced approach to emotion socialization, combining emotional support and suppression of youth's displays of negative emotions, engenders Black teens' confidence in their caregivers' availability to provide comfort, connection, and protection in times of need (i.e., perceptions of mother as a secure base). We examined associations among mothers' responses to Black teens' distress, teens' perception

Access to neighborhood destinations that offer opportunities for physical activity and socialization is associated with favorable post-stroke outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Assess associations between destinations near stroke survivor's residence - places like restaurants, recreation centers, and stores that offer opportunities for physical activity and socialization outside of the home and work - and their poststroke outcomes. METHODS: We included non-Hispanic white and Mexican American incident stroke survivors enrolled in the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi project (2009-19), a population-based cohort in Texas. EXPOSURE: count of destinations within 0.5-miles around survivors' residences. Outcomes assessed at approximately 3-, 6-, and
