Studies of the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex in spaceflight.

Changes in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during space flight have been suspected of contributing to space motion sickness. The horizontal VOR was studied in nine subjects on two space shuttle missions. Active unpaced head oscillation at 0.3 Hz was used as the stimulus to examine the gain and phase of the VOR with and without visual input, as well as the visual suppression of the reflex. No statistically significant changes were noted inflight in the gains or phase shifts of the VOR during any test condition, or between space motion sickness susceptible and nonsusceptible populations. [Labyrinthine and extralabyrinthine mechanisms of the development of motion sickness in weightlessness].

This paper describes an important problem of aerospace medicine, i. e. space motion sickness. The review surveys relevant Soviet and foreign publications. On their basis, including their own data, the authors discuss possible mechanisms of the sickness symptom-complex in the weightless state. The authors put forth their own ideas concerning current hypotheses of space motion sickness and discuss potential applicability of the theoretical concepts with respect to the prevention of this adverse symptom-complex. The authors describe selected outlines in the study of mechanisms of space motion sic

Nausogenic properties of various dynamic and static force environments.

Motion sickness can occur when an accelerating force acting on the human body repeatedly changes amplitude and direction or both. It also can occur without any motion after transfer into a constant force field significantly different from Earth-gravity. Dynamic and static causes of motion sickness can be distinguished accordingly. Space sickness, too, has dynamic as well as static aspects. Dynamic space sickness might depend on increased bilateral differential sensitivity of the peripheral and central vestibular apparatus, whereas static space sickness may be caused by erroneous compensation o

Space adaptation syndrome: multiple etiological factors and individual differences.

Space motion sickness is a significant operational concern in the American and Soviet space programs. Nearly 70% of all astronauts and cosmonauts are affected to some degree during their first several days of flight. It is now beginning to appear that space motion sickness like terrestrial motion sickness is the consequence of multiple etiological factors. As we come to understand basic mechanisms of spatial orientation and sensory-motor adaptation we can begin to predict etiological factors in different motion environments. Individuals vary greatly in the extent to which they are susceptible

Effect of microgravitation on the human equilibrium.

The 38-year period of human space exploration has gained for us a lot of experience in the problem of space motion sickness. The authors collected some causes of space sickness from the literature and from their research results. We collaborated with the Soviet-Russian space researchers and elaborated those vestibular research methods that were carried out by human space missions in the Soviet-Russian space station, on Earth, and after flight: spontaneous eye movement, foveal and peripheral optokinetic nystagmus, and vestibular stimulation. Using an earthly model of the effect of microgravitat

Promethazine Effects on Motion Sickness During Altered Gravity Induced by Parabolic Flight.

INTRODUCTION: Astronauts commonly experience space motion sickness, which can impair astronaut performance and safety. Pharmaceuticals are frequently used to reduce space motion sickness symptoms but have not been extensively studied in partial gravity. In this research effort, we investigated the impact of oral promethazine on motion sickness during parabolic flight. METHODS: We collected motion sickness scores from 12 subjects (6 women) during parabolic flight. Each subject participated in two flights-one 0-G flight and one partial g flight-experiencing 10 parabolas at 0 g, 0.25 g, 0.50 g,

A 1983 neuropharmacologic perspective of space sickness.

Space sickness is generally considered a variant of motion sickness although not fully proved as such. Understanding space sickness requires objective and quantitative characterization of the disorder. Vomiting is a quantifiable physiological event performed by the respiratory muscles which generate the pressures that evacuate the gut. Vomiting from all causes is coordinated by the vomiting center in the medulla oblongata. The emetic chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) in the area postrema is thought to be an indispensable element in the afferent pathway of motion sickness. About 30 potential neu

Vestibular suppression during space flight.

Normal movements performed while voluntarily fixing the head to the torso can lead to motion sickness in susceptible individuals. The underlying mechanism may involve excessive suppression of vestibular responses. A similar motor strategy is often adopted in the early days of a space flight and might contribute to the development of space motion sickness. In a recent experiment, we monitored the eye, head and upper torso rotations of four Life and Microgravity Spacelab crew members. For the purposes of this study, all data were excluded except for periods during which the subject was performin

Reliability of provocative tests of motion sickness susceptibility.

Accurate prediction of space motion sickness is dependent, in part, upon the reliability of terrestrial-based motion sickness susceptibility tests. In the present study, test-retest reliability values were derived from motion sickness susceptibility scores obtained from two successive exposures to each of three tests: 1) Coriolis Sickness Sensitivity Index (CSSI); 2) Staircase Velocity Movement Test (SVMT); and 3) Parabolic Flight Static Chair Test (PSCT). The reliability of the three tests ranged from 0.70 to 0.88. Normalizing values from predictors with skewed distributions improved the reli

[Motion sickness in the aerospace environment].

After a brief description of the newest and special form of motion sickness known as "space sickness" arising in space flight, and the various hypotheses on its aetiopathogenesis, motion sickness in general and the air or plane sickness deriving from atmospheric flying are discussed. The aetiopathogenesis of air sickness derives from abnormal stimulations that are primarily vestibular but also visual and somesthesic, and generated by irregular movements or variations in attitude of the plane. Reflex action than produces effects that are primarily neurovegetative (nausea, vomiting, pallor, scia

Motion sickness and otolith sensitivity: a pilot study of habituation to linear acceleration.

Astronauts, particularly in Skylab flights, experienced varying degrees of motion sickness lasting 3-5 d. One possible mechanism for this motion sickness adaptation is believed to be a reduction in otolith sensitivity with an attendant reduction in sensory conflict. In an attempt to determine if this hypothesis is valid, a ground-based pilot study was conducted on a vertical linear accelerator. The extent of habituation to accelerations which initially produced motion sickness was evaluated, along with the possible value of habituation training to minimize the space motion sickness problem. Space sickness and fluid shifts: a hypothesis.

In a sample of 64 first-time Space Shuttle crew members, 9 preflight variables related to fluid, electrolyte, and cardiovascular status were previously found to be significantly related to space sickness. The nine variables are serum uric acid, red cell count, environmental temperature at the launch site, serum phosphate, urine osmolality, serum thyroxine, sitting systolic blood pressure, calculated blood volume, and serum chloride. Using discriminant analysis, these preflight variables were used to correctly classify the 64 astronauts according to their space sickness incidence (NOTSICK or SI

Virtual reality as a countermeasure for astronaut motion sickness during simulated post-flight water landings.

Entry motion sickness (EMS) affects crewmembers upon return to Earth following extended adaptation to microgravity. Anticholinergic pharmaceuticals (e.g., Meclizine) are often taken prior to landing; however, they have operationally adverse side effects (e.g., drowsiness). There is a need to develop non-pharmaceutical countermeasures to EMS. We assessed the efficacy of a technological countermeasure providing external visual cues following splashdown, where otherwise only nauseogenic internal cabin visual references are available. Our countermeasure provided motion-congruent visual cues of an

Motion sickness.

Motion sickness is a common phenomenon affecting most patients at some point in life. Car sickness, airsickness, seasickness, and space sickness all involve a neural mismatch or confusion between the vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive systems that produces the symptoms of motion sickness. Therapy is directed toward decreasing conflicting sensory input, controlling nausea, and speeding the process of adaptation.

Motion sickness is linked to nystagmus-related trigeminal brain stem input: a new hypothesis.

Motion sickness is a common and distressing but poorly understood syndrome associated with nausea/vomiting and autonomic nervous system accompaniments that develops in the air or space as well as on sea or land. A bidirectional aetiologic link prevails between migraine and motion-sickness. Motion sickness provokes jerk nystagmus induced by both optokinetic and vestibular stimulation. Fixation of gaze or closure of eyes generally prevents motion sickness while vestibular otolithic function is eliminated in microgravity of space, indicating a predominant pathogenetic role for visuo-sensory input

[Comparison between motion sickness induced by reversed vision and that by parallel swing].

OBJECTIVE: To make clear the characteristics of motion sickness induced by reversed vision and to see whether it can be used in motion sickness experiments. METHODS: 10 healthy young men experienced walking tests wearing up-down or left-right reversing prisms, and parallel swing test on different days with intervals of 5-7d. Ataxia and motion sickness symptoms induced by walking wearing reversing prisms and those by parallel swing were observed. The reversed vision tolerance index (RVTI) and linear acceleration tolerance index (LATI) were calculated by an empirical formula. RESULTS: Both typ

Elicitation of motion sickness by head movements in the microgravity phase of parabolic flight maneuvers.

During parabolic flight maneuvers in a Boeing KC-135 aircraft 44 college students were tested for motion sickness susceptibility. These subjects were categorized as 1) insusceptible, 2) moderately susceptible, or 3) highly susceptible to motion sickness during exposure to varying gravitoinertial force levels. After categorization, they were tested in the microgravity phase of parabolic flight to see how three types of head movements affected their baseline susceptibility. The head movements evaluated included side-to-side swivel, shoulder-to-shoulder roll, and front-up head and trunk movements

Vestibular response to pseudorandom angular velocity input: progress report.

Space motion sickness was not reported during the first Apollo missions; however, since Apollo 8 through the current Shuttle and Skylab missions, approximately 50% of the crewmembers have experienced instances of space motion sickness. One of NASA's efforts to resolve the space adaptation syndrome is to model the vestibular response for both basic knowledge and as a possible predictor of an individual's susceptibility to the disorder. This report describes a method to analyze the vestibular system when subjected to a pseudorandom angular velocity input.

Free fall: a partial unique motion environment.

Conditions leading to the elicitation of motion sickness have been divided into two main categories: partial motion environments, in which head movements are required to elicit motion sickness, and complete motion environments, in which independent movements of the head are not required for the production of symptoms. It is postulated that, according to this categorization, free fall constitutes a partial motion environment. In support of this hypothesis evidence is reviewed from Skylab missions, experiments in parabolic flight, and ground-based studies.

Motion sickness susceptibility.

Motion sickness can be caused by a variety of motion environments (e.g., cars, boats, planes, tilting trains, funfair rides, space, virtual reality) and given a sufficiently provocative motion stimulus almost anyone with a functioning vestibular system can be made motion sick. Current hypotheses of the 'Why?' of motion sickness are still under investigation, the two most important being 'toxin detector' and the 'vestibular-cardiovascular reflex'. By contrast, the 'How?' of motion sickness is better understood in terms of mechanisms (e.g., 'sensory conflict' or similar) and stimulus properties
