Sea star wasting syndrome reaches the high Antarctic: Two recent outbreaks in McMurdo Sound.

Sea star wasting syndrome (SSWS) can cause widespread mortality in starfish populations as well as long-lasting changes to benthic community structure and dynamics. SSWS symptoms have been documented in numerous species and locations around the world, but to date there is only one record of SSWS from the Antarctic and this outbreak was associated with volcanically-driven high temperature anomalies. Here we report outbreaks of SSWS-like symptoms that affected ~30% of individuals of Odontaster validus at two different sites in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica in 2019 and 2022. Unlike many SSWS events i

Effect of ME-3451-106, an aqueous extract of Stichaster striatus with inhibitory activity of voluntary alcohol intake, in genetically drinker rats: Isolation and identification of the active fraction.

The aqueous extract obtained from Stichaster striatus Müller & Troschel (Asteroidea, Stichasteridae) has been shown to possess activity as an alcohol appetite inhibitor after oral administration in a rat model with a genetically established excessive appetite for alcohol (Wistar rats, lineage UChB). A significant decrease in the consumption of ethanol was observed (unrelated to a possible disulfiram effect) without a change in the normal food or water intake during the experimentation period. A bio-guided fractionation of the extract was carried out in order to identify the most active fractio

Evolution of neurohormone function revealed by actions of kisspeptin-type peptides in an echinoderm.

BACKGROUND: The neurohormone kisspeptin regulates reproductive maturation and function in mammals by stimulating hypothalamic production and release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. However, little is known about kisspeptin-type neuropeptide function in invertebrates and the evolution of kisspeptin signalling as a regulator of physiological processes. Here, we address these issues in a deuterostome invertebrate - the starfish Asterias rubens (phylum Echinodermata). RESULTS: Unlike mammals that have one kisspeptin precursor protein, in A. rubens, two precursor proteins (ArKPP1, ArKPP2) give

Keratoderma hereditarium mutilans (Vohwinkel's syndrome) associated with congenital deaf-mutism.

Keratoderma hereditarium mutilans, or Vohwinkel's syndrome, is a rare cutaneous disorder which is characterized by thickening of the palms, soles and dorsa of the hands and feet, and by ainhum-like constrictions of the fingers. We report a clinically typical case of Vohwinkel's syndrome in a 28-year-old, deaf-mute, woman. The patient presented with keratotic palms and soles which had a 'honeycomb' appearance, starfish-like keratoses on the dorsa of the hands, and pseudoainhum of the digits. Osteoporotic changes were present distal to the constricting bands. Successful treatment with retinoids

Effects of preservation methodology on stable isotope compositions of sea stars.

RATIONALE: Stable isotope analysis is used to investigate the trophic ecology of organisms and, in order to use samples from archived collections, it is important to know whether preservation methods alter the results. This study investigates the long-term effects of four preservation methods on isotopic compositions and isotopic niche parameters of sea stars. METHODS: We assessed the effects of preservation method (freezing, drying, formaldehyde, ethanol) and duration (0, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 months) on the stable isotope ratios of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur of sea star tissues. Isotopic rati

Salmonella in Raptors and Aquatic Wild Birds in Chile.

Salmonella enterica is one of the main causes of gastrointestinal disease worldwide. Wild birds are capable of harboring a variety of Salmonella serovars, which could have an important role in the epidemiology of salmonellosis in humans and production animals. We tested 519 fecal samples from raptors and aquatic birds from different regions of central (three rehabilitation centers for wildlife and the coastal area) and southern areas of Chile for Salmonella. All samples were obtained in 2015 and 2017, covering all four seasons. Salmonella was isolated from 12 of the 519 samples (2%) analyzed,

Variant of Vohwinkel's syndrome.

A 28-year-old female born to consanguineous parents, presented with progressive palmoplantar keratoderma since the age of six months and a constricting band on right fourth finger of one year duration. There was history of similar complaints being present in two other family members. Associated clinical findings included starfish-shaped cornified plaques on knuckles, resorption of distal phalanges and keratotic plaques on elbows, groins and knees. The patient was mentally sound and had normal audiometry. Biopsy from hyperkeratotic plaque showed hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, increased granular

E114G de Novo Mutation in GJB2 Gene in a Chinese Patient with Classical Vohwinkel Syndrome.

Vohwinkel syndrome (VS) is a rare autosomal dominant form of palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK), characterized by diffuse hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles, starfish-shaped keratotic lesions, and pseudo-ainhum. Mutations in GJB2 have been implicated in VS pathogenesis. In this study, Sanger sequencing of the GJB2 coding exons and exon-intron boundaries was performed in a Chinese patient with VS. A missense mutation c.341A>G (E114G) was also identified. This finding expands the mutational spectrum of VS and provides further insight into its genetic basis, which may facilitate improved genetic s

Vohwinkel syndrome, ichthyosiform variant--by Camisa--case report.

Vohwinkel syndrome or keratoderma hereditaria mutilans is a rare autosomal dominant palmoplantar keratosis, which manifests in infants and becomes more evident in adulthood. Its mode of inheritance is autosomal dominant with mutation in loricrin and Connexin 26 genes. Patients with this mutation present hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles, constricting bands of the digits, usually on the fifth, and starfish-shaped hyperkeratosis on the dorsal aspects of the hands and feet. The disease mostly occurs in white women, where constricting fibrous bands appear on the digits and can lead to progress

Tube feet dynamics drive adaptation in sea star locomotion.

Sea stars use hundreds of tube feet on their oral surface to crawl, climb, and navigate complex environments, despite lacking a central brain. While tube foot morphology and function as muscular hydrostats are well described, the mechanisms that coordinate their collective dynamics remain poorly understood. To investigate these dynamics, we employed an optical imaging method based on frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) to visualize and quantify tube foot adhesive contacts in real time in the species Asterias rubens across individuals spanning a wide size range. Our results reveal an in

In Silico Prediction of Steroids and Triterpenoids as Potential Regulators of Lipid Metabolism.

This review focuses on a rare group of steroids and triterpenoids that share common properties as regulators of lipid metabolism. This group of compounds is divided by the type of chemical structure, and they represent: aromatic steroids, steroid phosphate esters, highly oxygenated steroids such as steroid endoperoxides and hydroperoxides, α,β-epoxy steroids, and secosteroids. In addition, subgroups of carbon-bridged steroids, neo steroids, miscellaneous steroids, as well as synthetic steroids containing heteroatoms S (epithio steroids), Se (selena steroids), Te (tellura steroids), and At (ast

What's the resolutive surgery for pseudo-ainhum in Vohwinkel syndrome? A case report and review of the literature.

Vohwinkel Syndrome, also known as Keratoderma Hereditarium Mutilans, is an extremely rare dominant autosomal keratosis. It typically presents with "starfish" keratoses on the knuckles, palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK), hearing impairment and mutilating digital constriction bands (pseudoainhum) that cause strangulation, often leading to autoamputation of the affected digit. Both medical and surgical treatment haven't shown to date consistent results, in the treatment of pseudoainhum. In this study we present the case of a woman with Vohwinkel syndrome who showed constriction bands causing ischemi

Environmental and Ecological Effects of Climate Change on Venomous Marine and Amphibious Species in the Wilderness.

INTRODUCTION: Recent analyses of data show a warming trend in global average air and sea surface ocean temperatures. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, the sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased. This article will focus on climate change and projected effects on venomous marine and amphibious creatures with the potential impact on human health. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of environmental, ecological, and medical literature with a focus on climate change, toxinology, and future modeling specific to ven

Beyond sea urchins: sea stars and brittle stars as welfare-friendly models in marine ecotoxicology.

The field of marine ecotoxicology is based on a limited range of model organisms that incompletely represent sea and ocean biodiversity and ecological function. Although echinoderms have been recognised as valuable test organisms, ecotoxicological research predominantly focuses on sea urchins, with comparatively limited attention given to other classes. This review synthesises ecotoxicological studies published over the past two decades on sea stars (Asteroidea) and brittle stars (Ophiuroidea) taking into consideration contaminants investigated, the biological endpoints applied and their suita

Melatonin production in the sea star Echinaster brasiliensis (Echinodermata).

The primary hormone of the vertebrate pineal gland, melatonin, has been identified broadly throughout the tree of life, in animals, plants, and fungi, supporting a deep evolutionary origin for this signaling molecule. However, some key groups have not been studied. Echinoderms, deuterostome animals, are one of these groups. Herein we study the presence of melatonin and enzymes of its pathway in the sea star Echinaster brasiliensis. We demonstrate that E. brasiliensis produces endogenous melatonin, in the gonads, under a circadian pattern with a nocturnal peak of production. We also show that t

Asterias amurensis lipids enhance the immunity of immunosuppressed mice as sustainable marine-eco materials.

Starfish (Asterias amurensis) are important predators in the marine benthic environment, preying on mollusks and echinoderms. Their waste also causes significant environmental harm. However, starfish contain a variety of nutrients and biologically active compounds that require further investigation. To maintain marine ecosystems and address environmental waste, lipids were extracted from A. amurensis skin, and their immune-enhancing effects were evaluated in cyclophosphamide (CY)- induced immunosuppressive mice. A. amurensis lipids were combined with PEG 6000 (AA-PEG), which contains a high co

Variant of keratoderma hereditaria mutilans (Vohwinkel's syndrome). Treatment with orally administered isotretinoin.

Keratoderma hereditaria mutilans (KHM), or Vohwinkel's syndrome, is a rare genodermatosis consisting of hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles with a characteristic "honeycomb" appearance, keratotic structures taking the shape of a starfish and/or knuckle pads on the dorsal surfaces of the hands, and constricting bands (pseudoainhum) encircling digits of the hands and feet. We describe three cases of a variant of KHM with an associated ichthyosiform dermatosis in a pedigree consisting of 19 affected individuals through six generations. An autosomal dominant inheritance pattern for KHM was confi

The basiepithelial nerve plexus of the viscera and coelom of eleutherozoan Echinodermata.

The organisation of the basiepithelial nerve plexus in the alimentary canal of a starfish and the water vascular system of a sea-urchin is described. The plexus contains varicose aminergic neurones which terminate adjacent to the ciliated epithelial cells. It is proposed that the basiepithelial plexus innervates these cells and controls ciliary beating. The distribution of the basiepithelial plexus in various tissues described by other workers is discussed particularly in relation to whether it is the coelomic epithelium or the luminal epithelium which is innervated. It is concluded that where

A case of elevated liver function tests after crown-of-thorns (Acanthaster planci) envenomation.

The crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) inhabits coral reefs, largely throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Its dorsal surface is covered with stout thorn-like spines. When handled or stepped on by humans, the spines can puncture the skin, causing an immediate painful reaction, followed by inflammation and possible infection. Initial pain and swelling may last for days. Effects of envenomation on the liver have been demonstrated previously in animal models, but hepatic toxicity has not previously been described in humans. We describe elevated liver enzymes in a 19-year-old female assoc

Spermatozoa and Spermatogenesis in the Ribbon Worm Asteronemertes gibsoni (Hoplonemertea, Oerstediidae), a Symbiont of Sea Stars.

In the phylum Nemertea, the class Hoplonemertea (former Enopla) comprises the largest number of studied species with complex spermatozoa. Asteronemertes gibsoni Chernyshev, 1991, a nemertean species having a symbiotic relationship with sea stars, is characterized by complex filiform spermatozoa. Here, spermatogenesis and spermatozoon structure in A. gibsoni have been examined using light and electron microscopy. Numerous proacrosomal vesicles of two kinds have been found in early spermatogenic cells. In spermatozoa, the elongated acrosomal complex consists of two components: a core, which is a
