Quantification of scalp hair--a computer-aided methodology.

A method for obtaining a quantitative assessment of hair density is described. First, a photographic image of the scalp is digitized onto a high-resolution computer graphics screen. Second, the frequency of each of 256 gray levels (one for each of 500 vertical X 500 horizontal = 250,000 locations on the screen) is obtained and the frequency histogram of gray levels is displayed. Third, a statistical procedure, gaussian mixture analysis, is used to resolve the frequency distribution into two normally distributed component distributions. The first component distribution describes the range of gr

Nonparametric estimation of distributions and diagnostic accuracy based on group-tested results with differential misclassification.

This article concerns the problem of estimating a continuous distribution in a diseased or nondiseased population when only group-based test results on the disease status are available. The problem is challenging in that individual disease statuses are not observed and testing results are often subject to misclassification, with further complication that the misclassification may be differential as the group size and the number of the diseased individuals in the group vary. We propose a method to construct nonparametric estimation of the distribution and obtain its asymptotic properties. The p

Correlation between information entropy and pore connectivity in oxidic materials with random disordered porosity.

Pore connectivity is a crucial structural characteristic of porous solids that governs the mass transfer and diffusion of fluids through them. Information entropy, on the other hand, is a statistical property that can be estimated for any distribution, including the size distribution of pores in solids. In this work, we present the first comprehensive study investigating the correlation between the pore connectivity and the Shannon information entropy of classical pore size distributions of inorganic porous materials. Experimental data are based on sixteen reported oxidic alumino-phosphoro-van

An overview of Bayesian reasoning in the analysis of delay-discounting data.

Statistical inference (including interval estimation and model selection) is increasingly used in the analysis of behavioral data. As with many other fields, statistical approaches for these analyses traditionally use classical (i.e., frequentist) methods. Interpreting classical intervals and p-values correctly can be burdensome and counterintuitive. By contrast, Bayesian methods treat data, parameters, and hypotheses as random quantities and use rules of conditional probability to produce direct probabilistic statements about models and parameters given observed study data. In this work, we r

Characterization of the Airflow within an Average Geometry of the Healthy Human Nasal Cavity.

This study's objective was the generation of a standardized geometry of the healthy nasal cavity. An average geometry of the healthy nasal cavity was generated using a statistical shape model based on 25 symptom-free subjects. Airflow within the average geometry and these geometries was calculated using fluid simulations. Integral measures of the nasal resistance, wall shear stresses (WSS) and velocities were calculated as well as cross-sectional areas (CSA). Furthermore, individual WSS and static pressure distributions were mapped onto the average geometry. The average geometry featured an ov

About the Role of Falling Droplets' Sweeping in Surface Renewal during Dropwise Condensation.

To determine the heat transfer coefficient during dropwise condensation, two models are necessary: a heat transfer model through a single drop and a model of drop-size distribution. To model the distribution of the drop size, most studies dissociate the drop population into two distinct parts. A semiempirical model is then used to evaluate the drop-size distribution of "large" drops (i.e., typically greater than few micrometers), while the drop-size distribution of "small" drops is modeled using a statistical approach based on population balance. Currently, no accurate data are available to va

Improved statistics for contrasting means of two samples under non-normality.

This paper presents the asymptotic expansions of the distributions of the two-sample t-statistic and the Welch statistic, for testing the equality of the means of two independent populations under non-normality. Unlike other approaches, we obtain the null distributions in terms of the distribution and density functions of the standard normal variable up to n(-1), where n is the pooled sample size. Based on these expansions, monotone transformations are employed to remove the higher-order cumulant effect. We show that the new statistics can improve the precision of statistical inference to the

A bivariate zero-inflated negative binomial model and its applications to biomedical settings.

The zero-inflated negative binomial distribution has been widely used for count data analyses in various biomedical settings due to its capacity of modeling excess zeros and overdispersion. When there are correlated count variables, a bivariate model is essential for understanding their full distributional features. Examples include measuring correlation of two genes in sparse single-cell RNA sequencing data and modeling dental caries count indices on two different tooth surface types. For these purposes, we develop a richly parametrized bivariate zero-inflated negative binomial model that has

Population-level impact of osteoporotic fractures on mortality and trends over time: a nationwide analysis of vital statistics for France, 1968-2004.

Osteoporotic fractures are one of the leading causes of death in the elderly population, but mortality may have been reduced by the advances in management and prevention during recent decades. The authors analyzed the population-level impact of these fractures on mortality in France from 1968 to 2004. About 20 million death certificates registered in metropolitan France from 1968 to 2004 were analyzed. Osteoporotic fractures were identified by using a previously developed methodology. Age-specific and standardized mortality rates were calculated by site of fracture and sex, and time trends wer

Importance of Distributional Forms for the Assessment of Protozoan Pathogens Concentrations in Drinking-Water Sources.

The identification of appropriately conservative statistical distributions is needed to predict microbial peak events in drinking water sources explicitly. In this study, Poisson and mixed Poisson distributions with different upper tail behaviors were used for modeling source water Cryptosporidium and Giardia data from 30 drinking water treatment plants. Small differences (<0.5-log) were found between the "best" estimates of the mean Cryptosporidium and Giardia concentrations with the Poisson-gamma and Poisson-log-normal models. However, the upper bound of the 95% credibility interval on the m

Epidemiological cut-off values for Vibrio anguillarum MIC and disc diffusion data generated by standardised methods.

This work aims to generate the data needed to set epidemiological cut-off values for minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and disc-diffusion zone measurements of Vibrio anguillarum. A total of 261 unique isolates were tested, applying standard methods specifying incubation at 28°C for 24-28 h. Aggregated MIC distributions for a total of 247 isolates were determined in 9 laboratories for 11 agents. Data aggregations of the disc zone for the 10 agents analysed contained between 157 and 218 observations made by 4 to 7 laboratories. Acceptable ranges for quality control (QC) reference strains we

The effect of frequency band on quantitative EEG measures in neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.

The effect of frequency ranges on three quantitative EEG measures as related to neurodevelopmental outcome at 12-24 months is reported here. Thirteen EEG records from term neonates with moderate hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) were analyzed. The spectral entropy, spectral edge frequency and relative power were calculated for each EEG channel. 4 separate frequency ranges were employed and their respective variations examined. Graphical and statistical analysis was carried out on the results. Statistical separation between the mean distributions of SEF, H(s) and RP was not observed. The o

Statistical methods in G-protein-coupled receptor research.

In this chapter we provide an introduction to statistical methods appropriate in G-protein-coupled receptor research, including examples. Topics covered include the choice of appropriate averages and measures of dispersion to summarize data sets, and the choice of tests of significance, including t-tests and one- and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) plus posttests for normally distributed (Gaussian) data and their nonparametric equivalents. Techniques for transforming non-normally distributed data to more Gaussian distributions are discussed. Concepts of statistical power, errors, and the

New approach on analysis of pathologic cardiac murmurs based on WPD energy distribution.

In this paper, an approach on analysis of the pathologic cardiac murmurs for congenital heart defects was proposed based on the wavelet packet (WP) technique. Considering the difference of the energy intensity distributions for the innocent and pathologic murmurs in frequency domain, the WP decomposition was introduced and the WP energies at each frequency band were calculated and compared. Based on the analysis of a large amount of clinic heart sound data, the murmurs energy distributions were divided into five frequency bands, and the relative evaluation indexes for cardiac murmurs (ICM) wer

Time series models based on generalized linear models: some further results.

This paper considers the problem of extending the classical moving average models to time series with conditional distributions given by generalized linear models. These models have the advantage of easy construction and estimation. Statistical modelling techniques are also proposed. Some simulation results and an illustrative example are reported to illustrate the methodology. The models will have potential applications in longitudinal data analysis.

Human variability in mercury toxicokinetics and steady state biomarker ratios.

Regulatory guidelines regarding methylmercury exposure depend on dose-response models relating observed mercury concentrations in maternal blood, cord blood, and maternal hair to developmental neurobehavioral endpoints. Generalized estimates of the maternal blood-to-hair, blood-to-intake, or hair-to-intake ratios are necessary for linking exposure to biomarker-based dose-response models. Most assessments have used point estimates for these ratios; however, significant interindividual and interstudy variability has been reported. For example, a maternal ratio of 250 ppm in hair per mg/L in bloo

Dynamics of third order direct three-body recombination of heavy ions.

The direct three-body recombination reactions Cs+ + X- + R → CsX + R (X = F, I and R = Ar, Xe) are studied within the quasiclassical trajectory method using diabatic semiempirical potential energy surfaces, the encounters of the ions being non-central. The collision energies range between 1 and 10 eV (values typical for low temperature plasma), while the so-called delay parameter, which characterizes the delay in the arrival of the neutral atom R in relation to the time instant when the distance between the ions attains its minimum, is equal to 0 or 20%. The calculation results include the rec

A Bayesian model averaging approach for estimating the relative risk of mortality associated with heat waves in 105 U.S. cities.

Estimating the risks heat waves pose to human health is a critical part of assessing the future impact of climate change. In this article, we propose a flexible class of time series models to estimate the relative risk of mortality associated with heat waves and conduct Bayesian model averaging (BMA) to account for the multiplicity of potential models. Applying these methods to data from 105 U.S. cities for the period 1987-2005, we identify those cities having a high posterior probability of increased mortality risk during heat waves, examine the heterogeneity of the posterior distributions of

Morphometric analysis of the effects of exenteration and enucleation on the development of third and sixth cranial nerves in the rat.

The effects on rat cranial nerve growth of removing various amounts of extraocular muscle was studied using morphometric techniques. Growth in the third cranial nerves was found to be severely retarded when most of the muscle tissue was removed. By contrast, removal of the eye alone, leaving extraocular muscles relatively intact, was found to have little or no effect on the subsequent growth of third and sixth cranial nerve fibers and of extraocular muscle fibers. This conclusion could be drawn only through the application of statistical methods which take into account several generally unreco

Statistical analysis of Likert-based ordinal scales: a guide for clinical trialists.

BACKGROUND: Likert-based scales are a popular tool in clinical trials for assessing patient-reported outcomes. A key analytical decision involves whether to treat these data as binary, continuous, or ordinal. Each approach has implications for statistical power, bias, and interpretation of the results. In this report, we examine methods for evaluating Likert scales, with a particular focus on ordinal approaches, including win probability methods and proportional odds models. METHODS: We examined the use of proportional odds logistic regression, win probability estimation, dichotomisation with
