Social reputations provide a powerful mechanism to stimulate human cooperation, but observing individual reputations can be cognitively costly. To ease this burden, people may rely on proxies such as stereotypes, or generalized reputations assigned to groups. Such stereotypes are less accurate than individual reputations, and so they could disrupt the positive feedback between altruistic behavior and social standing, undermining cooperation. How do stereotypes impact cooperation by indirect reciprocity? We develop a theoretical model of group-structured populations in which individuals are ass

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine the tissue degradation in response to anti-IL6 receptor treatment in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients which are anti-TNF-α inadequate responders.
METHODS: RADIATE was a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, phase III trial. RA patients with previous inadequate response to anti-TNFα therapy (n=299) were randomly assigned to tocilizumab 4 or 8 mg/kg with methotrexate (10-25 mg weekly) or placebo with methotrexate. Type III collagen degradation (C3M) and CRP degradation (CRPM) were analysed in serum samples at bas

Stereotypies in animals are thought to arise from an interaction between genetic predisposition and sub-optimal housing conditions. In domestic horses, a well-studied stereotypy is crib-biting, an abnormal behaviour that appears to help individuals to cope with stressful situations. One prominent hypothesis states that animals affected by stereotypies are cognitively less flexible compared to healthy controls, due to sensitization of a specific brain area, the basal ganglia. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis in crib-biting and healthy controls, using a cognitive task, reversal

It is becoming evident that B-cell responses to particular epitopes or in particular contexts can be highly convergent at the molecular level. That is, depending on the epitope targeted, persons of diverse genetic backgrounds and immunological histories can use highly similar, stereotyped B-cell receptors (BCRs) for a particular response. In some cases, multiple people with immunity to a particular epitope or with a type of B-cell neoplasia will elicit antibodies encoded by essentially identical immunoglobulin gene rearrangements. In other cases, particular VH genes encode antibodies important

In this study the stereotypes about psychotherapists and medical doctors were examined. 172 personality traits were selected and dimensions were created, that was grouped by three professions (engineers, physicians, psychotherapists). The research questionnaire contained 45 contrary personality dimensions, which was rated to the previous three professions. After the screening criteria, 101 persons were included in the statistical analysis. Analyses of the variance filtered out 20 of the 45 dimensions in which the professions did not differ and 25 profession-specific dimensions remained in the

This article address the 'evil albino' plot device or albino bias as portrayed in films and explores how such labelling stimulates societal intolerance and discrimination against People Living With Albinism. The article reveals how media perpetuates stereotypes of albinism through their portrayal of role players and argues that the continued existence of such stereotypes is a failure to see albinism for what it is: a medical condition. The article further discusses Albinism related stigma and discrimination against the backdrop of the 'evil albino' plot device.

Theoretical models of public stigma toward mental illness have focused on factors that perpetuate stigma toward the general label of "mental illness" or toward a handful of specific illnesses, used more or less interchangeably. The current work used the Stereotype Content Model (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick, & Xu, 2002) to examine how one facet of public stigma--stereotype content--differs as a function of specific mental illnesses. Participants were recruited online from across the U.S. Study 1 demonstrated that the overarching category of people with mental illness was perceived as relatively incompe

This paper employs a field experiment to assess whether interpersonal contact changes domiciled individuals' attitudes of the homeless. Volunteers for Project Homeless Connect-a one-day event that provides social services to the homeless-were asked to complete a pre- and post-survey. The results provide mixed support for the contact hypothesis. After volunteering, respondents were far less likely to see homelessness as the result of individual characteristics, such as substance abuse or work aversion. However, opinion was remarkably stable when it came to policy preferences. The results cast d

Two experiments tested the influences of vivid imagery and person schemata on eyewitness accuracy. Participants watched an event sequence including actors performing stereotype-consistent and inconsistent actions. Additionally, participants either read descriptions of actions (Experiment 1) or vividly imagined actions (Experiment 2). After either 30 minutes or 2 days, recognition memory, source memory, and remember/know judgements were made. After 2 days, false alarms to imagined events increased, relative to the 30-minute test; those false alarms were more often misattributed to stereotype-co

Limited research indicates that public attitudes toward individuals with eating disorders are moderately negative. The present study examined specific forms of stigmatisation attributed to individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN). Eighty female participants recruited from an undergraduate institution completed questionnaires assessing stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination of four target individuals: a woman with AN, depression, schizophrenia and mononucleosis. AN was considered to result more from lack of social support and biological factors than poor living habits. Characteristics attribut

Many studies have shown that developmental cocaine exposure alters brain function and behavior, the present study examined the relationship between brain metabolism and behavioral responses to drug challenge. SKF 82958, a selective D1 dopamine agonist, was administered to preweaning cocaine-exposed (50 mg/kg/day) rats and controls at 60 days of age. Deoxyglucose was administered 30 min later, during the peak behavioral response, to measure brain functional activity. Pearsonproduct-moment correlations of behavior (locomotor activity and stereotypic behavior) with rates of glucose metabolism in

A 45-year-old Japanese man was admitted to our hospital because of persistent appearance of repetitive, purposeless stereotyped movements such as clapping the hands behind his back, scrubbing or rubbing movements of the hands. Laboratory examination showed low plasma copper and ceruloplasmin concentration. He was diagnosed as having Wilson's disease. Brain MRI revealed degeneration of the striatum and pallidum as well as atrophy of brainstem. Single photon emission computer tomographic scan (SPECT) showed hypoperfusion in the bilateral frontal lobe as well as basal ganglia. It is rare to see s

The Stereotyped Behavior Scale (SBS) is an empirically developed behavior rating scale for adolescents and adults with mental retardation (Rojahn, Tassé & Sturmey, 1997). Since the original publication, one item was deleted and two items were merged, leaving 24 items. In an additional change, severity scales were added to the frequency scales. In this paper, psychometric properties and (relative) norms for the new SBS are presented. In the psychometric study, 45 adults with mental retardation from a residential facility participated. Of these, 15 were selected for high-rates or very severe for

Stereotypies are patterned, repetitive, purposeless movements that are performed the same way each time. They are commonly seen in individuals with autism, schizophrenia, or mental retardation, and also occur as a feature of tardive dyskinesia and as movements in those with akathisia. We studied 10 children who had stereotypies but were not autistic or mentally retarded. Although most had an uneventful delivery, seven had mild to moderately delayed developmental milestones. Five had hyperactive behavior or attention-deficit problems. All appeared to be of normal intelligence. The median age of

1. The goal was to verify if central or peripheral sulphated cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK8) injections can modulate apomorphine (APO)-induced stereotyped behavior. Experiments were designed to determine the involvement of cholecystokinin receptor subtypes as well. 2. Animals which received CCK8 (0.0725, 0.145 and 14.5 nmol, icv) showed a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in APO (0.6 mg/kg, sc)-induced stereotyped behavior. 3. No other statistically significant difference was observed among groups. Since ip CCK8 (1.16 or 2.32 nmol/kg) injections did not interfere with APO-induced stereotypy,

We report a case of a Pick's disease (frontal predominant type) with unusual laughing. The patient was a 54-year-old, right handed, female. The patient began to show low activity and inappropriate laughing at about 51 years. She did not speak at all and showed weird laughing with a voice "hi hi hi hi hi hi" frequently at first presentation. When asked some questions, she sometimes answered with a nod. Almost all of her laughing did not match with the situation and seemed to lack a relationship between affective change and observed expressions. The laughing could be elicited by non specific and

The relationship of instructional prompts to rate of task completion and stereotypy was studied in one adolescent student with autism and high-frequency stereotypic behavior. Using an ABAB design, one experiment was conducted which systematically examined the role of prompts on (a) task completion and (b) time engaged in stereotyped behavior. Results suggested that prompts had little effect on the rate of task completion across sessions but did reduce time spent in stereotypies. These results are discussed in relation to stereotypies and implications for intervention and instruction.

High-frequency, stereotyped behavior may interfere with the acquisition of appropriate behavior. Through the use of a procedure involving access to vibratory stimulation and its response-contingent withdrawal, stereotyped behavior of two profoundly retarded students was virtually eliminated. A reversal design, employed in Experiment 1, demonstrated that the nonoccurrence and the occurrence of stereotypic hyperventilation was a function of the presence or absence of the intervention procedure. In Experiment 2, a multiple-baseline design provided evidence that the procedure repeatedly produced s

International statistics reveal a persistent paradox: women receive depression diagnoses at rates two to three times higher than men, yet male suicide rates are two to three times higher than female rates. We investigate whether gender stereotype priming affects self-reported mental health using an experimental design embedded in a representative survey of the Italian population. We show that exposure to the treatment is associated to worse self-reported mental distress, with statistically comparable effects across genders. K-means clustering analysis reveals substantial heterogeneity: treatme

OBJECTIVE: Stereotypic movement disorder (SMD) is a neurodevelopmental condition frequently co-occurring with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet its underlying pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Emerging evidence suggests that neuroinflammatory mechanisms may contribute to the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders. Based on this, we aimed to investigate the potential role of neuroinflammation, specifically interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), in the etiopathophysiology of both primary SMD and ASD.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included children and adolescents ag
