INTRODUCTION: Synthetic cannabinoids are novel psychoactive substances with potential for abuse and severe withdrawal symptoms. Despite widespread use, research on withdrawal is limited. We conducted a systematic review of case reports describing SC withdrawal symptoms.
METHODS: Literature searches were conducted across databases, including PubMed/Medline, Scopus, EMBASE, and PsycINFO, to identify case reports from inception to March 2025. Eligible studies involved human cases with confirmed SC use and clearly described withdrawal symptoms. Study quality was assessed using the CARE guidelines

β-Phenyl-γ-aminobutyric acid (phenibut) is an analog of the inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) that was first synthesized in Russia in the early 1960s. It is marketed as a nootropic (smart drug) to improve cognitive performance, and to treat generalized and social anxiety, insomnia, and alcohol withdrawal. The use of phenibut is legal in the USA and it is widely available online without a prescription. Increased public awareness of phenibut has led to a growing number of reports of acute intoxication and withdrawal. In this review, we describe the pharmacology of phenibut,

INTRODUCTION: During the treatment of alcohol use disorder, alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) can occur. Benzodiazepines remain the "gold standard" for the pharmacological treatment of AWS. However, other drugs have been approved in some European Countries for the treatment of AWS: namely, clomethiazole in Spain and Germany and sodium oxybate in Italy and Austria. Acute alcohol-associated hepatitis (AAH) is a distinct clinical syndrome characterized by the recent onset of jaundice with or without other signs of liver decompensation in patients with ongoing alcohol consumption.

Chronic use of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and its precursors can rapidly lead to physical dependence with the emergence of a withdrawal syndrome. This complication is similar to the one linked to alcohol or benzodiazepines. The onset of symptoms and specially neuro-psychiatric symptoms is, however, more rapid in the case of the GHB and precursors. There is currently no consensus on the therapeutic management of GHB withdrawal syndrome. High-dose benzodiazepines are the most commonly used treatment. The use of GHB by titration and tapering could show fewer side effects and withdrawal sympt

INTRODUCTION: ECIG use has increased among non-smokers, with the potential negative consequence of developing nicotine dependence. ECIG users report withdrawal symptoms upon abstinence, though the significance of these symptoms has been questioned. This preliminary study aimed to characterize the early timecourse of ECIG withdrawal under forced abstinence.
METHODS: Fifteen never-smoking ECIG users completed two conditions whereby participants either abstained from ECIG use (abstinence) or used their own ECIG (ad lib) for 3 h. Puff topography in this latter condition was measured via video obs

AIM: To examine the efficacy and safety of antiepileptic drugs (AED) for the inpatient treatment of patients with moderate to severe alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS).
METHODS: We searched in databases and gray literature to include randomized controlled clinical trials in adults that compare the use of AED versus placebo or any other medication. Studies that did not specify severity or were performed on an outpatient basis were excluded. The outcomes were improvement of symptoms, delirium tremens, seizures and adverse events. Two researchers independently selected the references, extracted t

Alcohol addiction is one of the most common health problems. Long-term consumption of high doses of ethanol leads to numerous adaptive changes in the central and peripheral nervous systems, most notably a decrease in the activity of inhibitory GABAergic pathways and an increase in the activity of excitatory glutamatergic pathways. Up to half of patients may develop alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) when they stop drinking alcohol. This article contains the recommendations of the Polish Psychiatric Association and the Pharmacotherapy Section of the Polish Society for Addiction Research for the

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews research on post-acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) management.
METHOD: We conducted a PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Revision and Meta-Analyses)-guided scoping review of the published PAWS literature, searching six electronic databases (from their inception through December 2020) for English-language randomized and nonrandomized studies.
RESULTS: A total of 16 treatment studies met the inclusion criteria. The strength of evidence overall for pharmacologic treatments is low, with often only short-term results being reported, small treat

This study explored the concept of withdrawal phenomena from the perspective of nurses, with the aim of developing a nursing diagnosis. Concept analysis was used as the framework of the study, a systematized review was conducted to identify relevant studies, and interpretation was based on qualitative content analysis. Specifying aspects, defining characteristics, related factors, and risk factors were extracted and classified into categories. Thirteen studies were identified as a basis for the construction of two nursing diagnoses: "withdrawal phenomena" and "risk of withdrawal complications.

Cerebellar disorders trigger the symptoms of movement problems, imbalance, incoordination, and frequent fall. Cerebellar disorders are shown in various CNS illnesses including a drinking disorder called alcoholism. Alcoholism is manifested as an inability to control drinking in spite of adverse consequences. Human and animal studies have shown that cerebellar symptoms persist even after complete abstinence from drinking. In particular, the abrupt termination (ethanol withdrawal) of long-term excessive ethanol consumption has shown to provoke a variety of neuronal and mitochondrial damage to th

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After participating in this CME activity, the psychiatrist should be better able to.
BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed, yet long-term use carries risks of adverse clinical outcomes and challenging withdrawal syndromes. Although gradual outpatient tapering remains the standard recommendation for discontinuation, a subset of patients may require more rapid discontinuation in inpatient settings due to complex factors, such as misuse of multiple substances, prior failed tapering attempts, or co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions.

Benzodiazepine acute withdrawal syndrome is well known, but the long-term neurological consequences of benzodiazepine exposure are much less familiar. A scoping review was conducted of electronic databases for studies that reported on patient outcomes four or more weeks after complete cessation of benzodiazepine use. Forty-six results were retrieved in total, some of which provided signals for protracted symptoms, often reported as incidental findings, and others that showed benzodiazepine discontinuation was beneficial. Some overlap occurred in the outcomes, but these two groups of studies su

BACKGROUND: Microdosing psychedelic drugs is a growing phenomenon, but little is known about the experiences surrounding this. Research broadly suggests that people may use psychedelics in an attempt to self-medicate for mental health and wellbeing. However, the precise details, rationale and meaning of such attempts remains unclear, and would benefit from clarification, using tailored experiential methods. This research therefore aimed to explore the way that users make sense of microdosing psychedelics, with a particular focus on the experience of any perceived mental health or wellbeing cha

BACKGROUND: Lorazepam is a widely prescribed benzodiazepine that is used to manage anxiety, insomnia, and status epilepticus and is used for pre-anesthetic care as well as several off-label indications including aggression, alcohol withdrawal, panic disorder, chemotherapy-associated anticipatory nausea, and catatonia. Recent increases in demand, manufacturing changes, and quality control issues have resulted in a shortage of injectable and oral lorazepam, prompting clinicians to use alternatives. One such alternative is midazolam, a drug that has been used primarily in the intensive care unit

INTRODUCTION: Newly incarcerated inmates with chronic alcohol use are at high risk for alcohol withdrawal. This descriptive study aims to describe the role of a clinical pharmacist within an alcohol detoxification unit (ADU) in the Los Angeles County jail that serves nearly 18 000 inmates facility-wide daily.
METHODS: This descriptive analysis was conducted from August 2, 2018 through October 31, 2018 within the jail ADU. The pharmacist attended daily assessments on all alcohol detox patients; identified and assessed patients at high risk of severe withdrawal; and initiated, modified, and dis
