Clinical features of taste disorders in Cronkhite-Canada syndrome: a report of 10 cases.

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a very rare gastrointestinal disorder with ectodermal abnormalities. Taste abnormalities appear in more than 80% of cases. Our objective was to investigate the characteristics of CCS. Ten patients with taste abnormalities who were diagnosed with CCS were included. A medical interview, examination of the tongue findings, and blood tests were performed, and taste functions were assessed using an electrogustometry (EGM) and a filter paper disc (FPD) before and after treatment. There was nail atrophy in all cases, weight loss in 8 cases, hair loss in 6 cases, ski

Olfactory and Taste Disorders in Patients Suffering from Covid-19, a Review of Literature.

Corona virus epidemic has caused a widespread disaster around the world. In studies, there are pieces of evidence of olfactory and taste dysfunction in patients with Covid-19. These symptoms occur independently or can be associated with other symptoms such as dry cough. The mechanism of the above-mentioned disorders and their clinical features in patients are not yet known. The rate of incidence of olfactory dysfunction in patients has been varied from 29.64% to 75.23% and the rate of incidence of taste dysfunction among the people can be different from 20.46% to 68.95%. Therefore, clinicians

From the Cover: Drug-Induced Taste Disorders in Clinical Practice and Preclinical Safety Evaluation.

More than 200 medications can induce taste disorders in patients. They not only reduce quality of life for those affected, but can lead to malnutrition, severe dehydration and difficulty in maintaining a therapeutic regimen. Nevertheless, the impact of drug candidates on taste is rarely evaluated in preclinical toxicology studies during the early stage of drug development. Moreover, knowledge about how to investigate these adverse effects is scarce in the toxicology field. Here, we discuss the clinical status of drug-induced taste disorders in patients, with the goal of providing toxicologists

Trait anxiety is associated with amygdala expectation and caloric taste receipt response across eating disorders.

Anxious traits are elevated in eating disorders (EDs), are considered risk factors for ED development, and trait anxiety has been linked to ED psychopathology. How trait anxiety relates to ED neurobiology is not well understood. In this study 197 individuals across the ED spectrum (anorexia nervosa n = 91; other specified EDs n = 34; bulimia nervosa n = 56; binge ED n = 16), and 120 healthy controls were assessed for anxious traits and learned to expect and receive caloric or neutral taste stimuli during brain imaging. Amygdala sucrose expectation response differed across groups (Wilk's lambda

Quantitative analysis of taste disorder in COVID-19 patients, the hypersensitivity to salty quality.

Recently, many of the studies have illustrated that the new pandemic SARS-CoV-2 can affect Central Nervous System through the olfactory bulb. In addition to investigating anosmia or hyposmia induced by this virus, a quantitative analysis was needed to clarify the taste and smell disorder of the new coronavirus. The four basic taste quality with five concentrations for sweet, sour, bitter, and salty were administered to 75 subjects divided into three groups: COVID-19 patients with taste disorder, COVID-19 patients without taste disorder, and control group. The results indicated the increment of

Crossmodal influences on food perception in those with smell and taste disorders: A preliminary study.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals living with Smell and Taste Disorders (SATDs) have a reduced quality of life in a number of different ways with one central factor being their inability to appreciate food flavour and thereby have a less fulfilling eating experience. Separately, it has been demonstrated that the perception of food can be influenced by senses beyond smell and taste. The aim of the current study was therefore to explore whether altering the way in which food is presented, influences its perception for those with SATDs. METHODS: Participants (n = 33) who self-identified as living with sme

Emerging Role of Taste Receptors, Entero-Endocrine Cells in Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major global healthcare challenge and burden on the quality of life in affected individuals. While lifestyle management is the mainstay treatment for T2D, the advent of gut-incretin-based therapies with powerful effects on metabolic health, appetite and weight regulation has focussed attention on the role of the gut in the risk, progression and management of T2D. Beyond the tongue, intestinal sweet taste receptors (STRs) are increasingly being identified and functionally characterised. Growing evidence now supports a role for nutrient-activated (e.g., sugars) intesti

Ketone Supplementation Attenuates Prediction Error Taste Response in Eating Disorders: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

OBJECTIVE: Emerging evidence suggests that eating disorder (ED) pathophysiology involves metabolic alterations, and preliminary data indicate that ketogenic interventions may reduce symptom severity. We tested whether exogenous ketone supplementation modulates neural responses in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) during a task previously shown to elicit altered prediction-error signaling in ED populations. METHOD: Twenty-two participants across the AN and BN spectrum (AN: n = 8; OSFED-AN: n = 9; BN: n = 4; OSFED-BN: n = 1) spanning a wide range of ages (19.0-52.1

Long-Term COVID-19 Smell and Taste Disorders Differ Significantly from Other Post-Infectious Cases.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 is causing a wide range of clinical manifestations. Severe complications and long-lasting sequelae have been identified. Thus, olfactory disorders are reported in up to 86% of cases in mild and moderate COVID-19 infections. We present the first study comparing simple and complex post-COVID-19 cases with matched non-COVID-19 post-infectious smell and taste disorders. METHODS: A total of 328 patients were recruited from the University Clinic for Flavour, Balance and Sleep, Ear-nose-throat Department, Goedstrup Hospital, Denmark. A non-COVID -19 post-infectious population

[A case of myasthenia gravis with transient taste disorders followed by aplastic anemia after thymectomy].

A 45-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of taste disorders in March 2014. He exhibited cervical muscle weakness and left eye ptosis, which responded to Tensilon test, and was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis (MG). He developed aspiration pneumonia and myasthenic crisis, which was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin and steroid pulse therapy. All symptoms disappeared. Oral administration of prednisolone and tacrolimus was started. Chest CT revealed thymoma and extended thymectomy was performed in May 2014. In December 2014, seven months after the thymectomy, hematological exa

Smell and Taste Disorder Impact on Eating Habits: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Smell and Taste disorders (SATDs) are underreported. There is a wide range of aetiology but recently we have seen growing prevalence related to Covid-19 infection. SATDs have broad implications for people's lives, including a significant impact on nutritional intake and eating behaviours, which we further explore here. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional observational study using an online questionnaire to gather data. Questions covered aetiology of SATDs, impact on BMI, social eating habits and enjoyment of food. RESULTS: A total of 794 participants responded of which 75% were f

Distinct smell and taste disorder phenotype of post-acute COVID-19 sequelae.

PURPOSE: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) commonly accompanies coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We investigated the kinetics of OD resolution following SARS-CoV-2 infection (wild-type and alpha variant) and its impact on quality of life, physical and mental health. METHODS: OD prevalence was assessed in an ambulatory COVID-19 survey (n = 906, ≥ 90 days follow-up) and an observational cohort of ambulatory and hospitalized individuals (n = 108, 360 days follow-up). Co-occurrence of OD with other symptoms and effects on quality of life, physical and mental health were analyzed by multi-dimensional

Evaluation of antibiotic-induced taste and smell disorders using the FDA adverse event reporting system database.

Adverse effects can occur owing to anorexia, which can reduce treatment compliance and worsen the patients overall condition. One such side effect, namely drug-induced taste and smell disorders, reduces patients quality of life. Although antibiotics can cause taste and smell disorders, a few studies have examined antibiotic-induced taste and smell disorders. Therefore, this study comprehensively analyzed the relationship between taste and smell disorders and antibiotic usage. The side effects of antibiotics were investigated using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System database (FAERS). The re
